While we praise the Lord for all the wonders of His power, tvisdom and love, displayed in a system which is to wax old and perish, loe may therein contemplate, as in a glass, those new heavens and that new earth of whose duration there shall be no end. Read Nature; Nature is a friend to truth. Nature is Christian, preaches to mankind. And bids dead matter aid ms in our creed. The sun, that fountain of life and heart of the world, the moon shining unth a lustre borrowed from his beams, the stars glittering by night in the clear firmament, the air giving health to all things that live and move, the rain and the dew descending from above, the how which compasseth the heavens about with a circle of glory, the voice of thunder and the piercing power of lightning — all these are ready to instruct us in the mysteries of faith. They speak their Maker as they can. But want and ask the tongue of man.

  • On Writing Cultural Histories of Tax Law
Assembled_Issue_3 v5 (Do Not Delete) 2/22/2012 9:07 AM Chasing Ghosts: On Writing Cultural Histories of Tax Law Assaf Likhovski* This Article discusses the use of arguments about “culture” in two debates about the imposition, application and abolition of income tax law: A debate about the transplantation of British income taxation to British-ruled Palestine in the early twentieth century, and a debate about tax privacy in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century Britain. In both cases, “culture,” or some specific aspect of it (notions of privacy) appeared in arguments made by opponents of the tax. However, it is difficult to decide whether the use of cultural arguments in these debates simply reflected some “reality” that existed prior to these debates, whether “culture” was actively constituted in these debates to further the specific interests of the participants, or whether the cultural arguments that appeared in the debates combined reflection and constitution in some determinable way. Using legal debates to learn something about culture, the Article concludes, is sometimes problematic. The Article therefore suggests an additional approach to the study of law and culture, one which focuses on the rhetorical level, seeking to map the ways in which arguments about “culture” (and related terms referring to the traditional and particular), appeared in tax law debates. * Professor, Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law. Three outstanding educators from the Western Galilee region, Noa Kali, Yoram Posklinsky, and Sandee Iloouz, will be coming to Buffalo from Friday afternoon, March 31 through early afternoon April 3. Federation is now a member of a consortium of 14 communities (13 in the US as well as Budapest, Hungary) as part of a partnership with the Western Galilee region in Israel (which includes the port city of Akko). Several women from our community, who participated in February’s Heart to Heart Mission to Israel, spent Shabbat in the region and met with leaders from the community and visited important sites in the region, including the Western Galilee Medical Center (see page 6). I had the privilege of spending five days in the region as well and met with leaders of our consortium as well as each of our three distinguished guests. We are in the process of finalizing the program calendar for the visit, which will include speaking engagements at local synagogues, meeting with children in religious schools and Kadimah Academy, as well as an evening event for the entire community on Sunday, April 2.
