FAUSKEl AND R. D. GUSTIN 2 ABSTRACT. Twenty-seven species of the subfamily Crambinae known as sod web worm moths were collected from South Dakota. A key to species has been included as well as their distribution patterns in South Dakota. This study began after damage to rangeland in several South Dakota counties in the years 1974 and 1975. Damage was reported from Cor son, Dewey, Harding, Haakon, Meade, Perkins, Stanley and Ziebach counties. An effort was made to determine the species of Crambinae present in South Dakota and their distribution. Included are a key for species identification and a list of species with their flight periods and collection sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS Black light traps using the General Electric Fluorescent F ls T8 B1 15 watt bulb were set up in Brookings, Jackson, Lawrence, Minnehaha, Pennington and Spink counties. In Minnehaha County collecting was carried out with a General Electric 200 watt soft-glow bulb. Daytime collecting was used in several localities. Material in the South Dakota State University Collection was also utilized. For each species a map is included showing collection localities by county. Ecology of aquatic and semi-aquatic Lepidoptera Krzysztof Pabis* Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Hydrobiology, University of Lodz, Banacha 12/16, 90-237 Lodz, Poland Abstract – This paper reviews the current knowledge on the ecology of aquatic and semi-aquatic moths, and discusses possible pre-adaptations of the moths to the aquatic environment. It also highlights major gaps in our understanding of this group of aquatic insects. Aquatic and semi-aquatic moths represent only a tiny fraction of the total lepidopteran diversity. Only about 0.5% of 165,000 known lepidopterans are aquatic; mostly in the preimaginal stages. Truly aquatic species can be found only among the Crambidae, Cosmopterigidae and Erebidae, while semi-aquatic forms associated with amphibious or marsh plants are known in thirteen other families. These lepidopterans have developed various strategies and adaptations that have allowed them to stay under water or in close proximity to water. Problems of respiratory adaptations, locomotor abilities, influence of predators and parasitoids, as well as feeding preferences are discussed. Nevertheless, the poor knowledge on their biology, life cycles, genomics and phylogenetic relationships preclude the generation of fully comprehensive evolutionary scenarios. Volume 7 – 10 July 2013 A newsletter for the Pyraloidea fans Editorial Dear Pyraloidea fans, Welcome to this 7th edition of our news- letter. The last year has been almost as exciting for me as the preceding. I haven’t yet been in the field, and our planet’s bio- diversity continues to diminish and to be poorly managed, but scientifically speaking I have reasons to be happy. Firstly, I was able to secure funding to hire Théo Léger at our Museum for three years to do his Ph.D.; his research will focus on the phylogeny of Crambinae and Scopariinae, with Matthias Nuss as co-supervisor. A beta version of these data records will be made available on the OSAC server (http://osac.oregonstate.edu/IPT) at the time of this publication. The beta version will be replaced in the near future with an official release (version 1.0), which will be archived as a supplemental file to this paper. Methods Basic digitization protocols and metadata standards can be found in (Shepard et al. 2018). Identifications for this family are tricky, especially in the Pacific Northwest where the pyraloid fauna remains relatively unstudied. -

Dyar Custodian of Lepidoptera, United States National Museum and Carl Heinrich Of the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture INTRODUCTION The genus Diatraea contains a considerable number of species of moths, and is distributed throughout the world, especially in the tropical portions. The larvae are borers in the stems of various grasses, and several species have attracted attention from an economic point of view by their depredations upon sugar cane and Indian corn. con- We consider here the American species only ; but we have not fined ourselves strictly to the limits of the genus Diatraeco. This genus belongs to the family Pyralidae, subfamily Crambinae, and to that section of the subfamily in which vein 7 of the fore wing arises from the discal cell. Among the genera so characterized are some in which vein 11 of the fore wing anastomoses with vein 12, which group includes Diatraea; we herewith treat this whole group, although recognizing that it is not a natural one, the anastomosing of veins 11 and 12 having occurred twice in different lines of descent. In addition to these, we include observations on certain more distantly related forms whose position requires correcting, or the larvae of which have been reported from cane or corn. Ten genera and 56 species are treated in this paper, of which 5 genera and 12 species are described as new. Ten names are added to the synonymy and three species described in Diatraea are unrecog- nized and omitted from our keys. -
