It will involve a case study about how Core Maths has been implemented including details of the scheme of work and the course structure. The potential challenges and opportunities for students will also be identified. Suitable for KS4 and KS5. Gillian Owen: KS4 and KS5 Teacher of maths at Beauchamp College, Oadby; Teacher of Core Maths course 2 2D Shapes From A Different Perspective Reasoning analytically is an important skill in mathematics and learning about the geometry of 2D shapes is an effective platform from which to develop this skill. In this session we will look at 2D shapes from a different perspective that will help us to engage with their properties and definitions. We will go on to consider whether some sets of shapes can be thought of as subsets of others, thus leading to the concept of inclusivity. This will be a practical and visual workshop as we generate shapes from wooden ‘diagonals’ and a dynamic figure created in Geogebra, but there will be plenty to think about. Suitable for KS3 and KS4. Dr. Sue Forsythe: Lecturer in Mathematics Education at University of Leicester Teaching for Mastery in the Secondary Mathematics Curriculum 3 Increasing Challenge Through Deepening Understanding How do we rise to the challenge of the new curriculum - to challenge all pupils without ‘accelerating to new content’? We will look at some simple general approaches to allow pupils to ‘go deeper’. What does this mean and what does it look like in the classroom? We will have a go ourselves with some KS3 and KS4 examples, though the principle will apply to all key stages. Rob Tait: Assistant Director (Maths Hubs) National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics 4 Lessons From Lessons - Learning From Shanghai This workshop will cover some of the findings from the recent Maths Hubs exchange programme to Shanghai. Shanghai consistently tops the rankings as the highest performing educational jurisdiction in the world. Drilling down beyond cultural and systemic differences, we will look at their approach to learning and teaching mathematics and what we can implement in the English context. Consideration will be given to lesson design, questioning style, variation theory and teaching for mastery in mathematics. The exchange involved teachers and students in KS3 but there are ‘lessons’ for all key stages. Chris Shore: KS4 and KS5 Teacher of maths at Beauchamp College,Oadby; East Midlands South Maths Hub Secondary Lead 5 Beginning Mastery In KS4 As a brand new KS4 school, Brockington College has faced the challenges of adapting practices from KS3 and developing whole new practices for GCSE, including beginning to develop mastery in both KS3 and KS4. Peter Mattock, will talk about some of the changes and additions at Brockington and explore some of the ways he is developing practice and moving towards mastery in KS4. Suitable for KS3 and KS4. Peter Mattock: Director of Maths and Numeracy at Brockington College, Enderby 6 Teaching For Mastery In Primary Schools And The Transition From KS2 To KS3 This breakout session/workshop will look at what is involved in a mastery mathematics curriculum in the Primary Phase, and the experiences pupils should have had. It will also the consider the transitional issues for pupils moving from the primary phase to the secondary phase in terms of pedagogy and subject content. Suitable for KS3 and KS4. Sarah Bishop: Headteacher of Parkland Primary School, S.Wigston, Leicestershire; former East Midlands South Maths Hub Primary Lead.
