Seven External Factors That Adversely Influenced Benedict Arnold’S 1775 Expedition to Quebec
SEVEN EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT ADVERSELY INFLUENCED BENEDICT ARNOLD’S 1775 EXPEDITION TO QUEBEC Stephen Darley Introduction Sometime in August of 1775, less than two months after taking command of the Continental Army, Commander-in-Chief George Washington made the decision to send two distinct detachments to invade Canada with the objective of making it the fourteenth colony and depriving the British of their existing North American base of operations. The first expedition, to be commanded by Major General Philip Schuyler of Albany, New York, was to start in Albany and take the Lake Champlain-Richelieu River route to Montreal and then on to Quebec. The second expedition, which was assigned to go through the unknown Maine wilderness, was to be commanded by Colonel Benedict Arnold of New Haven, Connecticut.1 What is not well understood is just how much the outcome of Arnold’s expedition was affected by seven specific factors each of which will be examined in this article. Sickness, weather and topography were three external factors that adversely affected the detachment despite the exemplary leadership of Arnold. As if the external factors were not enough, the expedition’s food supply became badly depleted as the march went on. The food shortage was directly related to the adverse weather conditions. However, there were two other factors that affected the food supply and the ability of the men to complete the march. These factors were the green wood used to manufacture the boats and the return of the Lieutenant Colonel Roger Enos Division while the expedition was still in the wilderness. -

[FILM 380] Alexander, William (1726-1783). Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1 reel. William Alexander, also known as “Lord Sterling,” first served as colonel of the 1st NJ Regiment. In 1776 he was appointed brigadier general and took command of the defense of New York City as well as serving as an advisor to General Washington. He was promoted to major- general in 1777. Papers consist of correspondence, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. Originals are in the New York Historical Society. OCTOBER 1775 5 65 Lordship sent ashore a party of soldiers, under command of two officers, who marched through Norfolk to the place where the cannon were, destroyed 17 of them, and carried off two for their own use, without molestation. The above cannon we are confident were never intended for such a purpose; on the contrary, they belonged to sundry private Gentlemen, who had them -removed there for safety. Two companies of regulars are just arrived, viz: Capt. John Fleming's from Henrico, and Capt. Robert Ballard's from Mecklenburg. We hear from Norfolk, that Capt. Matthews, of the Norfolk minute-men, Mr. William Robinson and Mr. John Hancock, have been taken prisoners by Lord Dunmore, but for what we cannot learn. A large sloop from St. Eustatia, mounting 16 six pounders and a number of swivels, is said to be gone up the bay with a large quantity of gunpowder. Mr. [John] Goodrich of Portsmouth, whose vessel Lord Dunmore suspects of having brought in a supply of that article lately, is confined in irons on board a man of war. 22 Oct. (Sunday) [Beverly, October 22, 17751 At Cambridge I was ordered by Gen'l Washington to take the command of a detachment of said army and proceed on board the Schooner Franklin, on the 16th October 1775 his instructions and additional instructions, I send you a true copy of them. -

In the main, these logs were completed by the Officer of the Watch (OOW) when the ship was at sea and by the Quartermaster (QM) when the ship was in harbour. Each log, representing one calendar month, was completed in PENCIL, with no erasure allowed. Any errors were crossed out and the correct data entered, and each log was signed and dated by the Captain on a weekly basis. There does not appear to be any strict rule regarding what goes in the logs. Some OOWs were diligent in completing the logs, some were not. The same is true of entries made by the QM. Quite a few log entries have NOT been transcribed. When at sea, there are numerous entries regarding changes of course eg.”a/c to avoid fishing vessels” and in harbour, many references to the Guard Boat or MOD Police patrols, or ships passing. As is the way of things, many entries are abbreviated, have acronyms or are accepted Naval terms or expressions and these are shown ‘as is’. Ships names are shown in upper case eg. JUPITER or RFA OLMEDA. Shore Establishments are styled as follows: HMS Mercury Any data show in italics is information added to clarify or question the log entries, and entries shown in quotes are verbatim. -

Revere House Radio Episode 4 Revisit the Ride: What Actually Happened on the Midnight Ride? Welcome in to another episode of Revere House Radio, Midnight Ride Edition. I am your host Robert Shimp, and we appreciate you listening in as we continue to investigate different facets of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride leading up to Patriots Day in Boston on Monday April 20. Today, April 18, we will commemorate Paul Revere’s ride, which happened 245 years ago today, by answering the question of what actually happened that night? Previously, we have discussed the fact that he was a known and trusted rider for the Sons of Liberty, and that he did not shout “The British Are Coming!” along his route, but rather stopped at houses along the way and said something to the effect of: “the regulars are coming out.” With these points established, we can get into the nuts and bolts of the evening- how did the night unfold for Paul Revere? As we discussed on Thursday, Paul Revere and Dr. Joseph Warren had known for some time that a major action from the British regulars was in the offing at some point in April 1775- and on April 18, Revere and Warren’s surveillance system of the British regulars paid off. Knowing an action was imminent, Warren called Revere to his house that night to give him his orders- which in Paul Revere’s recollections- were to alert John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the soldiers would be marching to the Lexington area in a likely attempt to seize them. -
