See page three for the full report Executive Head Teacher’s Message Dear Parent/Guardian, As we approach the Easter break and the end of another successful term, I must first congratulate the Year 11 and Post 16 students on their maturity, commitment and hard work as we approach the summer public examinations. It is the staff and students that make our school a success and I am pleased to share that we are still on track for the school to be performing above the national average again this year. The attitude of our young people to learning is impressive and I am proud of how students have been working to support each other during this busy period, as a vibrant learning community. I would like to reassure parents at this busy exam preparation time that we are ensuring that there is high support for the students as well as challenge and our focus has been very much on student’s wellbeing as well as their learning, which has included offering student’s reward treats along the way! I would also like to take the time in advance to thank all of the staff and students who have signed up for the Easter revision sessions. This additional supported learning will help the students to achieve their best. As well as a high focus on learning, you will see in this publication that our careers programme is an important aspect of school life for all year groups, it has been a busy term for this area and we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support we receive from local employers, UCAS, colleges and universities, which offer support to the Year 11 and Post 16 students as they move on to the next stage of their education. -

Lincolnshire Pension Fund 2016 Actuarial Valuation Valuation Report March 2017 Peter Summers Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries For and on behalf of Hymans Robertson LLP 2016 Valuation – Valuation Report | Hymans Robertson LLP Hymans Robertson LLP has carried out an actuarial valuation of the Lincolnshire Pension Fund (“the Fund”) as at 31 March 2016, details of which are set out in the report dated 22 March 2017 (“the Report”), addressed to the Administering Authority of the Fund, Lincolnshire County Council (“the Client”). The Report was prepared for the sole use and benefit of our Client and not for any other party; and Hymans Robertson LLP makes no representation or warranties to any third party as to the accuracy or completeness of the Report. The Report was not prepared for any third party and it will not address the particular interests or concerns of any such third party. The Report is intended to advise our Client on the past service funding position of the Fund at 31 March 2016 and employer contribution rates from 1 April 2017, and should not be considered a substitute for specific advice in relation to other individual circumstances. Issue 21 Newsletter May 2020 Alia is cycling 100 miles in May to raise money for The Lily Foundation Executive Headteacher’s Message Dear students; parents / carers and staff, As we continue in this period of extended lockdown, instead of the weekly update that I have become accustomed to issuing on a Friday afternoon, please have a good look through this bumper newsletter that shares many success from this academic year. I think this must be the biggest edition ever and I would like to thank everyone that has contributed and helped put this together. In these unusual times, it is good to be reminded of some of the Spalding Academy events and achievements since September and to remind students of the general buzz of life at School that we can hopefully get back to as soon as safely possible. I hope by sharing this issue of the newsletter it will help our students and our families feel more connected to the school, during this period of absence? There are far too many great aspects of this publication for me to pull out as being ‘highlights’ and share with you, so I will let you find your own favourite story, report or image. However, a few stand out articles that I know will prompt fond memories include the Geography Department’s Year 7 Fantastic Places homework project, which is always so popular. This year the models that students built were so complex and professional, they were all truly impressive. Also, since September the Art & DT department have yet again excelled in the creative area. -

It has been a privilege to work here since 1999 and it is even more of an honour to lead the school into an exciting future. Since taking over in January, there have been many changes to improve the school even further. You will be aware that we had an Ofsted inspection earlier this year. The inspection team confirmed that De Aston is a GOOD school and has some outstanding features. We have already been working on lots of initiatives to improve what we do. Return to One Hour Lessons From September, we will return to a model of five one hour lessons per day. This has been done to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. The start and end of the school day remain exactly the same. There is a slightly later lunchtime, starting at 1.35pm, similar to how it was a few years ago but the learners will still get an extended break in the late morning, when they can also eat, as has always been the way at De Aston. Standards I am a headteacher that is committed to standards of good behaviour, good attendance and a smart uniform. These are the building blocks for our learners being ready to learn. -

A few years ago a regional tourist board coined the phrase ‘Britain’s best-kept secret’ as a way to lure more visitors. This is not a tourist guide of course, but it might be fair to say that state boarding is perhaps the ‘best-kept secret’ in British education. Members of the State Boarding Schools Association represent enormous diversity. There are 38 state boarding schools right across the UK ranging in boarding numbers from under 50 to over 600. The mix of schools includes grammar schools and schools specialising in areas like agriculture or military. -

Reference: No Summary: In March 2016 the Children and Young People Scrutiny Committee (CYPSC) published a report into its wide-ranging investigation into the Council's grammar school transport policy. The 2016 report is attached as Appendix A. One outcome of the report was that the Council's Executive opted to leave the policy as it was but asked for a review and update after 2 years. This report is that updated review. Actions Required: The Committee is invited to 1. note and comment on the outcomes of the 2018 review; 2. support the continuation of the existing policy in relation to grammar school transport. 1. Background 1.1 There are 16 secondary grammar schools in Lincolnshire, including one school (Spilsby King Edward VI School), which is described as a 'bi-lateral' school, and which has a 'grammar stream' but is otherwise not a selective entry school. All of the 15 other schools select all their pupils for entry at age 11, that is, year 7.
