Frankenstein Turns 200! Mary Shelley and the Birth of a Gothic Legend Monday, October 22 from 11:30 AM - 1 PM Library Auditorium This lecture will explore the life and career of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, from her early days of being reared in a progressive, feminist household to the fateful encounter in Geneva that led to her authoring Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. It was here, in 1816, that Shelley, along with her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, lodged with the infamous Lord Byron, who challenged his guests to each write a horror story. This competition spawned the creation of Frankenstein. Secondly, the Gothic genre of literature, to which Frankenstein belongs, will be discussed in detail so that readers may fully appreciate the intricacies of this classic novel.
