Abstract Homelessness occurs with uncommon regularity in the works of American naturalists, and in each case, the result of a character's homelessness results in a crisis of social identity and self definition. This pattern recurs in the works of the canonically identified naturalists, such as Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser, as well as other writers who have only been tangentially associated with naturalism—Edith Wharton and Paul Laurence Dunbar, for example. In this study, I analyze the relationship between homelessness as it is represented in the novels and the political debate over the United States's imperialist aspirations at the turn of the nineteenth century. In chapter 2,1 look closely at the effects that the loss of home has on the protagonists of Dunbar's The Sport of the Gods (1901), Norris's Vandover and the Brute (1894), and Wharton's The House of Mirth (1903). Through the physical dislocation of the characters, these writers explore the integral relationship between identification of the self within the structure of a home and the subsequent disruption of self identity caused by its loss. Chapter 3 expands the definition of home by looking specifically at the coterminous relationship between the woman's body and the space that she inhabits. Examining Wharton's Summer (1918) and Dreiser's Jennie Gerhardt (1911), I demonstrate that, because of the social expectations that women should embody domestic values, women’s homelessness is represented as a process of failure to project the self into the world. v Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. The final chapter demonstrates that the structure of the narratives enact the process of display necessary for the domination of the other and that this structure dramatizes and exposes the mechanism of colonialization. American naturalism ultimately reinforces the values of imperialism while critiquing the destructiveness of conspicuous consumption. vi Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Chapter 1 Introduction: Establishing Boundaries In the city at that time there were a number of charities, similar in nature to the Captain's, which Hurstwood patronized in a similiarly unfortunate way. One was a convent mission-house of the Sisters of Mercy in 15th Street—a row of red brick family dwellings before the door of which hung a plain wooden contribution box, on which was painted the statement that every noon a meal was given free to all those who might apply and ask for aid. This simple announcement was modest in the extreme, covering as it did a charity so broad. Institutions and charities are so large and so numerous in New York that such things as this are not often noticed by the more comfortably situated. But to one whose mind is upon the matter, they grow exceedingly under inspection —SisterCarrie (1900) One of the first boundaries that individuals encounter is the one that defines the home and family from the outside. Who are the members of the family and the community? What are the parameters of the home territory? For the United States, these basic questions took on a public character at the turn of the nineteenth century, fueled by the announcement

The first, “a chestnut-haired girl” whom Jennie names Rose Perpetua, is “taken from the Western Home for the Friendless” (394). The second, Harry, is adopted in part as Jennie’s response to her failure to gain a post in “some charitable organization” because “she did not understand the new theory of charity which was then coming into general acceptance and practice—namely, only to help others to help themselves.” Jennie, rather, “believed in giving— and was not inclined to look too closely into the protestations of those who claimed to be poor” (397). In the narrative, Rose Perpetua and Harry become the latest recipients of Jennie’s emotional directness and “giving” nature after the death of her daughter Vesta and her rejection by the love of her life Lester Kane. The adoptions thereby help to fulfill Dreiser’s intention to validate Jennie’s innate and spontaneous generosity of spirit, in contrast to the mores of a “respectable” middle-class that excludes her and condemns her extra-marital sexuality. What has become less clear over time is that the novel particularizes Jennie’s adoptions in relation to very historically specific philosophies of child welfare. Jennie Gerhardt was composed and published during a period when the historical counterparts of the orphanage from which Rose Perpetua was rescued were being challenged and replaced under what was recognizably a “new theory of charity” that emphasized fostering, adoption, and support within the family home.

    RICE UNIVERSITY THE UN-NATURAL WOMAN: A STUDY OF DREISER’S MAJOR WOMEN CHARACTERS by BARBARA BUCKWALTER CARLITZ A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Director's Signature: April, 1964 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is the exploration of Dreiser's use of naturalism through the various women char¬ acters whom he created. Two novels (The Genius and The Bul¬ wark) are eliminated. In the remaining six novels, the principal women characters are analyzed and compared with the essential aspects of naturalistic treatment of character, particularly feminine character. Secondarily noted are pos- ' sible influences on Dreiser other than naturalism and the general trend of his literary and philosophic thought. A close analysis of characterization shows that for his earliest novels (Sister Carrie and Jennie Gerhardt), Dreiser was dependent on Intuition and experience. His orient ation is somewhat naturally "naturalistic," but his characters are rather sentimentalized. Later works (such as An American Tragedy) suggest that Dreiser deliberately attempted a naturalistic characterization; to some degree he succeeded. Final portraits (in his "Trilogy of Desire") Indicate a turn to the mystic or spiritual emphasis in characterization. On the basis of such a progression of women characters, one finds some difficulty in endorsing whole-heartedly the view that Dreiser is a naturalistic novelist. One must admit v/ith Dreiser himself that he is to a great degree "romantic." This paradox of two philosophic and literary points of view is quite apparent in the seven women characters under study. DANCE Theodore Dreiser is usually hailed as a pioneer of American realism who freed American literature from Victorian restraints, from nineteenth century idealism and optimism, and from the ever-present moralizing of domestic sentimentalism. It is inter­ esting to note, however, that this shockingly modern trail­ blazer not only stands at the dawn of a new era in literature, but also at the twilight of the old, for in Dreiser is a mixture of both the new realism and naturalism and the old senti­ mentalism that had dominated American literature from its inception. During his formative years, before he read Zola and Balzac, Dreiser was exposed to the popular literature of his day, which consisted of tales in which virtue triumphed, truth prevailed, evil was punished, and good was ultimately rewarded.

CONCLUSION ....---..--......... .148 BIBLIOGRAPHY ...........................1.... .149 iii CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION The rise of naturalism in American letters was born out of a reaction against romanticism by writers such as Theodore Dreiser, Hamlin Garland, Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Jack London, Upton Sinclair and Robert Herrick, who attempted to rid the American novel of romanticism by delving deeper into life's truths than did the realists Mark Twain, William Dean Howells and Henry James. The naturalists objected to the limited subject matter of the realists; they focused their attention on "slums, crime, illicit sexual passions, exploi- tation of man by man" 2 and other actualities of the world. George Perkins outlined other distinctions between realism and naturalism in American literature.3 He describes nineteenth-century realism, 1870-1890, as represented by writers who created a world of truth by keeping actuality clearly in mind. Written and published after a period of intensive study in scientific philosophy and occult phenomena, this study uses the collection’s theoretical framework as a lens to explicate Dreiser’s rarely discussed 1929 semi-fictional collection of biographical sketches, A Gallery of Women, and the important role of the New Woman as an agent of evolutionary change in his fiction.
