Elias (U Pennsylvania 1959) “You know, I don’t like Sister Carrie.” William Dean Howells to Dreiser (1900) “Sister Carrie was so displeasing to one of the members of the firm, or to his wife, that the book, though it came out according to the letter of Dreiser’s contract, was published without enthusiasm and few copies were sold. It had in fact something like the same fate as Crane’s Maggie. But Dreiser’s was, in its naïve decade, the more disturbing book… Readers long accustomed to seeing the lives of women in novels shown under a strict scheme of rewards and punishments were outraged. Such lives as Carrie’s ought not to be told about, even if they happened. Dreiser had no sympathy with a moralism that contradicted his observation. The first attractive woman he had ever seen was his brother Paul’s mistress. One of his sisters had eloped with a married man in Chicago, to New York, and lived in reasonable comfort. The first, “a chestnut-haired girl” whom Jennie names Rose Perpetua, is “taken from the Western Home for the Friendless” (394). The second, Harry, is adopted in part as Jennie’s response to her failure to gain a post in “some charitable organization” because “she did not understand the new theory of charity which was then coming into general acceptance and practice—namely, only to help others to help themselves.” Jennie, rather, “believed in giving— and was not inclined to look too closely into the protestations of those who claimed to be poor” (397). In the narrative, Rose Perpetua and Harry become the latest recipients of Jennie’s emotional directness and “giving” nature after the death of her daughter Vesta and her rejection by the love of her life Lester Kane. The adoptions thereby help to fulfill Dreiser’s intention to validate Jennie’s innate and spontaneous generosity of spirit, in contrast to the mores of a “respectable” middle-class that excludes her and condemns her extra-marital sexuality. What has become less clear over time is that the novel particularizes Jennie’s adoptions in relation to very historically specific philosophies of child welfare. Jennie Gerhardt was composed and published during a period when the historical counterparts of the orphanage from which Rose Perpetua was rescued were being challenged and replaced under what was recognizably a “new theory of charity” that emphasized fostering, adoption, and support within the family home. -

EPICTETUS AS SOCRATIC MENTOR1 In Tom Wolfe's most recent novel, A Man In Full, a young Californian, down on his luck, converts a macho sixty-year old tycoon, facing financial ruin, to Stoicism.2 The young man, Conrad, has miraculously escaped from the Santa Rita gaol as a result of an earthquake. Shortly before, he had discovered Epictetus in a book called The Stoics, a book he had been sent mistakenly in place of a riveting thriller by his favourite author with the title, The Stoics' Game. He rapidly comes across this passage: T [Zeus] gave you a portion of our divinity, a spark from our own fire, the power to act and not to act, the will to get and the will to avoid. If you pay heed to this, you will not groan, you will blame no man, you will flatter none' (p. 398). Conrad is hooked. An innocent among a bunch of hideous felons, he asks himself: 'What would Epictetus have done with this bunch? What could he have done? How could you apply his lessons two thousand years later, in this grimy gray pod, this pigsty full of beasts who grunted about mother-fuckin this and mother-fuckin that?' (p. 410). Conrad memorises chunks of Epictetus. He refers a series of challenges to Zeus, overcomes a thug twice his size, and radiates Stoic strength. At the end, hired as a male nurse in Atlanta for the massive but now ailing Croker, the about-to-be ruined tycoon, Conrad tells Croker about the Stoic Zeus and Epictetus. -

Widely employed in Sister Carrie, the theme of deception reveals the conflicts between feminine and masculine power through the utterances. In addition, the materialization in the relationship between man and woman especially Carrier and her two lovers is presented in the consumer society. And the protagonists in the novel are tragic products of the inability to communicate with each other and the victims of their desires and consumer society. He believed that human beings are helpless in the grip of instincts and social forces beyond their control, and he judged human society as an unequal contest between the strong and the weak. Both of his masterpieces Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925), which were mostly based on his personal experience, expanded and clarified those themes. By comparing Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy, this thesis analyzes the author’s exploration of the possibilities of 20th century American life with its material profusion and spiritual doubt of the life value. The reference item should be familiar to the readers. The current research identifies literary allusion in The Financer (1912) and the characters referred to Ouida's Tricotrin (1869), Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847), Amelia Edith Huddleston Barr's A Bow of Orange Ribbon (1886), Edward Bulwer Lytton’s Kenelm Chillingly (1874), and William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1603) which is explained with Abstract reference to the plot of Theodore Dreiser’s Trilogy of Desire: The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947). The available literature review testified that a thorough evaluation of the allusions within the novel had not been accomplished to date, although these allusions link the literary pieces of the greatest minds in literature. -

The Japanese Journal of American Studies, No. 19 (2008) Dreiser and the Wonder and Mystery and Terror of the City Kiyohiko MURAYAMA* INTRODUCTION In the summer of 1887, Theodore Dreiser, a gawky 16 year-old boy, left a small town in Indiana and went alone to the rapidly growing Midwestern metropolis of Chicago to seek his fortune. He had to start, however, with tak- ing his fi rst job as a busboy at a seedy restaurant. Seven years later, in No- vember, 1894, he arrived in New York where he struggled to establish himself as a journalist and would-be novelist. Once again, he experienced the harsh- ness of life in the big city, only his sufferings in New York, which drove him to the verge of suicide, were even worse than in Chicago. When he wrote his fi rst novel Sister Carrie, he drew on his experiences of these two metropoli- tan centers. They provided an inexhaustible source of material for his major novels as well as his more overtly autobiographical writings, so much so that he emerged as what might be called the founder of the American city novel. As Blanche Housman Gelfant puts it, “[in] a way, all the assumptions and motifs of modern urban fi ction were implicit in Sister Carrie. It was the ge- neric novel of twentieth-century city fi ction, just as Dreiser was its generic novelist.”1 She further writes that “[he] stands out as a germinal fi gure in American urban fi ction, a fi gure to whom later writers have turned for inspi- ration because they have found in his novels a fi ctional world that is familiar to them, that is the world they themselves have experienced.”2 Copyright © 2008 Kiyohiko Murayama. -

Abstract The paper aims to describe the protagonist as ambitious to become the member of upper class in American society and financial gains by violating ethics for the purpose of power. He struggles and utilizes all sources to achieve his desired goals based on financial success. His involvement in different business activities, his movements from cities to cities and his emotional attachments are focused in Theodore Dreiser’s Trilogy of Desire (1972); The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947) are subtitled as Trilogy of Desire. The title is consciously selected as it not only deals with three novels but also represents the three main desires of Frank Cowperwood: desire for financial gains, own and appreciate great works of art, and enjoy the company of beautiful women. The perspectives that illuminate the research aim is to explore the effects of financialisation on the power, sex and class. The collected data is analysed through inventory technique by descriptive and interpretative approaches. This research provides contribution for future research to highlight the same characteristics in another literary piece. Keywords: Ambition, Business, Movement, Emotional Attachment, Financialisation.
