The first, “a chestnut-haired girl” whom Jennie names Rose Perpetua, is “taken from the Western Home for the Friendless” (394). The second, Harry, is adopted in part as Jennie’s response to her failure to gain a post in “some charitable organization” because “she did not understand the new theory of charity which was then coming into general acceptance and practice—namely, only to help others to help themselves.” Jennie, rather, “believed in giving— and was not inclined to look too closely into the protestations of those who claimed to be poor” (397). In the narrative, Rose Perpetua and Harry become the latest recipients of Jennie’s emotional directness and “giving” nature after the death of her daughter Vesta and her rejection by the love of her life Lester Kane. The adoptions thereby help to fulfill Dreiser’s intention to validate Jennie’s innate and spontaneous generosity of spirit, in contrast to the mores of a “respectable” middle-class that excludes her and condemns her extra-marital sexuality. What has become less clear over time is that the novel particularizes Jennie’s adoptions in relation to very historically specific philosophies of child welfare. Jennie Gerhardt was composed and published during a period when the historical counterparts of the orphanage from which Rose Perpetua was rescued were being challenged and replaced under what was recognizably a “new theory of charity” that emphasized fostering, adoption, and support within the family home. -

To this effect, this study examines the predicament of the masses in the American capitalist space. The study also investigates the arrogance and affluence that the bourgeois live in, against the backdrop of the misery of the proletariat. Using Alfred Adler‟s individual psychology and the Marxist theoretical approach, the study is based on the premise that in the Cowperwood trilogy, Dreiser castigates the excesses of modern capitalism and in the process, suggests means of moralising this ideology. The study also revealed that capitalism could be reformed through spiritual revivalism, the strengthening of family ties, and a rethinking of the American Dream. RICE UNIVERSITY THE UN-NATURAL WOMAN: A STUDY OF DREISER’S MAJOR WOMEN CHARACTERS by BARBARA BUCKWALTER CARLITZ A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Director's Signature: April, 1964 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is the exploration of Dreiser's use of naturalism through the various women char¬ acters whom he created. Two novels (The Genius and The Bul¬ wark) are eliminated. In the remaining six novels, the principal women characters are analyzed and compared with the essential aspects of naturalistic treatment of character, particularly feminine character. Secondarily noted are pos- ' sible influences on Dreiser other than naturalism and the general trend of his literary and philosophic thought. A close analysis of characterization shows that for his earliest novels (Sister Carrie and Jennie Gerhardt), Dreiser was dependent on Intuition and experience. His orient ation is somewhat naturally "naturalistic," but his characters are rather sentimentalized. Later works (such as An American Tragedy) suggest that Dreiser deliberately attempted a naturalistic characterization; to some degree he succeeded. Final portraits (in his "Trilogy of Desire") Indicate a turn to the mystic or spiritual emphasis in characterization. On the basis of such a progression of women characters, one finds some difficulty in endorsing whole-heartedly the view that Dreiser is a naturalistic novelist. One must admit v/ith Dreiser himself that he is to a great degree "romantic." This paradox of two philosophic and literary points of view is quite apparent in the seven women characters under study. Dreiser's Histories in the “Trilogy
FISH, CRYSTAL, AND LOOP: DREISER’S HISTORIES IN THE “TRILOGY OF DESIRE” BY T. AUSTIN GRAHAM In 1912, Theodore Dreiser spoke with the New York Sun about his new novel The Financier, the first volume of what would become his epic “Trilogy of Desire.” He briefly described the plot as being concerned with one Frank Cowperwood, a Philadelphia broker who enriches himself during the post-Jacksonian period of wildcat banking, the Civil War, and the financial panics of the 1850s, ’60s, and ’70s. He also alluded to his planned but as-yet-unwritten sequels The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947), which would see Cowperwood and the American economy through the advent of corporations, the rise of the labor movement, the Populist campaigns of William Jennings Bryan, and the dawn of the twentieth century. Dreiser spoke at greater length about his novel’s sense of history, announcing that while The Financier was ostensibly concerned with a nineteenth-century person and context, he believed it evoked something much older. “In ‘The Financier’ I have not taken a man so much as I have a condition,” he told the reporter. “It has always struck me that America since the civil war in its financial and constructive tendencies has represented more the natural action of the human mind when it is stripped of convention, theory, prejudice and belief of any kind than almost any period in the world’s history.”1 He went on to compare American business magnates of the period to the ambitious, self-interested, and imperial rulers of previous eras, finding a transhis- torical connection uniting them all: “I do not think that the mind of H. -

SENTIMENTALISM IN DREISER'S HEROINES CARRIE AND JENNIE By DARYL c. DANCE Theodore Dreiser is usually hailed as a pioneer of American realism who freed American literature from Victorian restraints, from nineteenth century idealism and optimism, and from the ever-present moralizing of domestic sentimentalism. It is inter esting to note, however, that this shockingly modern trail blazer not only stands at the dawn of a new era in literature, but also at the twilight of the old, for in Dreiser is a mixture of both the new realism and naturalism and the old senti mentalism that had dominated American literature from its inception. During his formative years, before he read Zola and Balzac, Dreiser was exposed to the popular literature of his day, which consisted of tales in which virtue triumphed, truth prevailed, evil was punished, and good was ultimately rewarded. -

Robert Graves – The Greek Myths 1955, revised 1960 Robert Graves was born in 1895 at Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His principal calling is poetry, and his Selected Poems have been published in the Penguin Poets. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he has since earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include: I, Claudius; Claudius the God; Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth; Count Belisarius; Wife to Mr Milton (all published as Penguins); Proceed, Sergeant Lamb; The Golden Fleece; They Hanged My Saintly Billy; and The Isles of Unwisdom. He wrote his autobiography, Goodbye to All That (a Penguin Modem Classic), in 1929. His two most discussed non-fiction books are The White Goddess, which presents a new view of the poetic impulse, and The Nazarene Gospel Restored (with Joshua Podro), a re-examination of primitive Christianity.
