They promise to give the opinion of other readers about a book. They promise to steer you to the book you want for the purpose you have in reading. They promise to cut the waste time when you get hold of the wrong book. Book lists are promises of greater excitement and enjoyment in what you read. Book lists are personal. They represent the judgment of their compilers about books. They represent the taste of their compilers. The user has to learn what to expect from a list and to use it as it fits him. He may discover that the recommendations about the maturity level of a book are too high or too low for him. He may find a bias in the list toward romanticism, or toward realism, or toward existen- tialism. He may find the list more helpful for nonfiction than for fiction. It may be a list good for finding plays but not very good for finding poetry. Book lists are organized. So are libraries. Libraries are organized in large, broad categories. A book list is organized on a more personal and individual scale. Book lists bring together materials in new patterns. They try to guess the patterns in which people are apt to read. They make it pos- sible to find everything on a subject such as religion or the generation gap whether it is fiction, poetry, drama, or non- fiction. They cut across the divisions set up by libraries. Book lists are not reading. Anyone who uses book lists a great deal becomes familiar with a great number of titles of books that he has not actually read. If you thumb through this list over and over, titles become old friends. They be- come a part of your knowledge of the world of books. It is easy tv slide into thinking that you have read the books you have only read about. But the reality of a book is always different from someone's description of it. 1;ook lists are static. They are frozen at a given point in publishing history. The world of books is dynamic. It is ix x FOREWORD TO THE STUDENT constantly moving forward and changing. Tens of thousands of new books are published year by year. Beforea book list is in print, it is somewhat out of date. Don't confine your reading to any lict. Make discoveries and explorations on your own. Book lists are provocative. The reader always carrieson a silent debate with the compilers of the list. "Why did they ever put that title on the list? Why didn't they include this book?" This very process forces the readerto crystallize his own understandings of what he has formerlyread. Often the appearance of a title in a strangecategory on a book list gives the reader a new insight into the bookthat he has formerly missed. Book lists are made to serve the reader. Maythis one serve you. Let it become your slave. Don't becomea slave to it. G.     RSA JOU R N A L 25/2014 GIULIANA MUS C IO A Transcultural Perspective on the Casting of The Rose Tattoo A transcultural perspective on the film The Rose Tattoo (Daniel Mann, 1955), written by Tennessee Williams, is motivated by its setting in an Italian-American community (specifically Sicilian) in Louisiana, and by its cast, which includes relevant Italian participation. A re-examination of its production and textuality illuminates not only Williams’ work but also the cultural interactions between Italy and the U.S. On the background, the popularity and critical appreciation of neorealist cinema.1 The production of the film The Rose Tattoo has a complicated history, which is worth recalling, in order to capture its peculiar transcultural implications in Williams’ own work, moving from some biographical elements. In the late 1940s Tennessee Williams was often traveling in Italy, and visited Sicily, invited by Luchino Visconti (who had directed The Glass Managerie in Rome, in 1946) for the shooting of La terra trema (1948), where he went with his partner Frank Merlo, an occasional actor of Sicilian origins (Williams, Notebooks 472). Thus his Italian experiences involved both his professional life, putting him in touch with the lively world of Italian postwar theater and film, and his affections, with new encounters and new friends. In the early 1950s Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo as a play for Anna Magnani, protagonist of the neorealist masterpiece Rome Open City (Roberto Rossellini, 1945). However, the Italian actress was not yet comfortable with acting in English and therefore the American stage version (1951) starred Maureen Stapleton instead and Method actor Eli Wallach.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Iowa Research Online The Writing of Andersonville MacKINLAY KANTOR Nearly thirty years ago The University of Iowa Libraries received, as a gift from Iowa author MacKinlay Kantor, the original manuscript of Kantor’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel Andersonville. The “manuscript” of this Civil War novel, which concerns the notorious Confederate prison camp for Union soldiers in southern Georgia, consists of a series of author’s notes, several successive drafts or revisions, a final manuscript, and proof pages as well as an international file of press clippings. At the request of the library director Mr. Kantor subsequently prepared the following account of the writing of Andersonville, which is published here with the permission of the author’s son, Tim Kantor. Editor This discussion of the writing of Andersonville should serve as an adequate explanatory outline for full understanding of the manuscript— its appearance and condition. I started writing the novel on December 16, 1953, and finished it on May 25, 1955. The first few pages (beginning with the scene where Ira Claffey walks through the woods away from his plantation) were written on my old L. C. Smith typewriter, for sentimental reasons. This is a machine rebuilt from two other old L. C. Smiths—the one used by my mother throughout her editing of the Webster City Daily News (1921-1925) and another (second-hand) one which I bought during those years for my own use. Later, as the typewriters began to show wear and tear despite frequent overhaulings, the two were built into one machine.

Note The Caryl Chessman Case: A Legal Analysis The authors of this Note analyze the major legal issues in- volved in the Chessman case. They conclude that Chessman was accorded all of his rights under the law, that the com- plexity of the legal issues did not warrant twelve years of litigation,and that judicialindecision was the principalfactor which accounted for the years of delay. In 1948 Caryl Chessman, having been sentenced to suffer the pun- ishment of death by lethal gas, was confined to a cell on San Quen- tin's death row. The events which had brought Caryl Chessman to death row, while sensational, were not unlike those which had placed many criminals in the same plight. The future- the years of criminal appeals, many of which Chessman himself launched and conducted from his prison cell-was from the standpoint of time alone to be unique in the annals of criminal justice.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
    Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.
