Over the years, Belgian politicians have played a prominent role in European politics. There was always a shared feeling among the population that integration with Europe was useful and in the national interest. In recent times, however, this consensus has been somewhat worn down. n 2009, the first President of the European Council to be appointed was a I Belgian, when Herman Van Rompuy became “President of Europe”. Five years later Donald Tusk, a former prime minister of Poland, took over the helm. And five years after that, in 2019, the role fell to a Belgian once more: Charles Michel fit the jigsaw of nominations and was asked by his colleagues to chair the European Council. Belgians have quite often had a steering role in European politics. The activities of the EU legislator do not, in fact, take into account all cases in which sexual abuse is directly consumed online, i.e. where child pornography is provided by the child following the establishment of a relationship of trust between predator and victim. Furthermore, uncontrolled use of the internet can facilitate access to content that is not suitable for children, such as websites that glorify practices relating to anorexia and bulimia, including websites that incite suicide and self-harm. POLICY PAPER European issues n°420 European Parliament: 7th February 2017 redistribution of political balance Charles de Marcilly François Frigot At the mid-term of the 8th legislature, the European Parliament, in office since the elections of May 2014, is implementing a traditional “distribution” of posts of responsibility. Article 19 of the internal regulation stipulates that the Chairs of the parliamentary committees, the Deputy-Chairs, as well as the questeurs, hold their mandates for a renewable 2 and a-half year period. Moreover, internal elections within the political groups have supported their Chairs, whilst we note that there has been some slight rebalancing in terms of the coordinators’ posts. Although Italian citizens draw specific attention with the two main candidates in the battle for the top post, we should note other appointments if we are to understand the careful balance between nationalities, political groups and individual experience of the European members of Parliament. A TUMULTUOUS PRESIDENTIAL provide collective impetus to potential hesitations on the part of the Member States. In spite of the victory of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European elections, it supported Martin As a result the election of the new President of Schulz in July 2104 who stood for a second mandate as Parliament was a lively[1] affair: the EPP candidate – President of the Parliament. 8 marzo 2020 Caro Presidente Sassoli, Ti scriviamo per esprimere la nostra profonda preoccupazione per la diffusione della malattia infettiva causata dal coronavirus COVID-19 in Europa e per richiedere ulte- riori misure di sicurezza per salvaguardare i Membri del Parlamento europeo, il per- sonale e la popolazione locale. Come ben sai, il livello di emergenza legato alla diffusione di questo virus è note- volmente aumentato nel corso delle ultime ore: il numero di casi confermati si sta moltiplicando in molti Stati membri, compreso il Belgio, e sono state confermate nuove aree di contagio. Misure di sicurezza straordinarie sono state adottate dalle autorità pubbliche di tutta Europa e intere aree sono state messe in quarantena. Il numero di casi confermati è in costante aumento in Belgio e a Bruxelles e questa settimana abbiamo riscontrato i primi casi di nuovi coronavirus nelle istituzioni del- l'UE. Sebbene apprezziamo che siano già state adottate misure straordinarie per far fron- te a questa emergenza, riteniamo che la situazione in rapida evoluzione e i maggiori rischi per la salute richiedano ulteriori misure di sicurezza come l'immediata interru- zione di tutti i lavori parlamentari, compresa la prossima sessione plenaria, come misura precauzionale. Il Parlamento europeo, con oltre 5000 persone che vi lavorano e viaggiano regolar- mente tra la loro città natale e Bruxelles, ha il potenziale per diventare un focolaio di trasmissione del coronavirus. For years, Europe and the world have been witnessing a crime against humanity without opposing any resistance to it. In recent months, several studies have reported the use of Uyghur forced labour for the benefit of major European companies. Indeed, many Chinese factories, directly supplying EU brands exploit the Uyghurs and benefit from their forced labour. Facing this abjection, Europe must act to protect the lives and fundamental rights of Uyghurs. The EU should use its trade and market power to safeguards the founding principles enrichened in our Treaties and guiding our external policies. As the US did lately through an imports ban passed almost unanimously in the US House of Representatives, Europe urgently needs to establish a blacklist of Chinese companies implicated in Uyghur forced labour. Lo scorso giugno l'organizzazione internazionale WikiLeaks ha pubblicato una presunta bozza dell'Accordo commerciale sugli scambi di servizi (TiSA). Tali rivelazioni, che denotano importanti conseguenze in merito alla privatizzazione di servizi fondamentali, come banche, sanità e istruzione, vanno ad aggiungersi alle analisi previste dai negoziati in atto, quali la disamina dei principi comuni per la regolamentazione dei servizi finanziari e la valutazione dei potenziali vantaggi per crescita e occupazione. L'UE ha inoltre pubblicato recentemente un concept paper che indica una struttura dell'accordo basata su un approccio modulare simile a quello utilizzato per il ciclo negoziale di Doha. Per giunta l'accordo, oltre ad essere delineato con marginale trasparenza, potrebbe, secondo le disposizioni, non essere rivelato per i cinque anni successivi alla sua approvazione. A tal proposito, può la Commissione indicare: — come il TiSA determinerà le politiche economiche dei maggiori paesi a capitalismo avanzato e se i parlamenti degli Stati interessati verranno coinvolti; — quali benefici concreti potranno avverarsi per crescita e occupazione, e come il disciplinamento delle attività finanziarie e dei servizi summenzionati verrà alterato; — se ritiene che l'approccio strutturale indicato possa portare a un risultato fallimentare come accaduto per il Doha Round e se, in omaggio alla trasparenza, prevede una consultazione pubblica relativamente ai dieci cicli di negoziati che avranno luogo quest'autunno? 1 Europe’s two-faced authoritarian right: ‘anti-elite’ parties serving big business interests 15 May 2019 INTRODUCTION If the more pessimistic projections are to be believed, authoritarian right-wing politicians will do well in the upcoming European Parliament elections, reflecting a surge in EU scepticism and disillusionment with establishment parties, many of whom have overseen a decade or more of punishing austerity. These authoritarian right parties are harnessing this disillusionment using the rhetoric of ending corruption, tackling ‘elite’ interests, regaining ‘national’ dignity and identity, and defending the rights of ‘ordinary people’. However, the contrast between this rhetoric and their actual actions is stark. From repressive laws to dark money funding; from corruption scandals to personal enrichment; from corporate deregulation to enabling tax avoidance, the defence of ‘elite’ interests disguised as the defence of disaffected classes is a defining characteristic of Europe’s rising authoritarian right parties. After the election, Europe could well see the formation of a new axis by these parties across the EU institutions, simultaneously becoming a significant force in the European Parliament, while having a strong voice in the Council and European Council, and nominating like-minded commissioners to the EU’s executive. Such an alliance could undermine or prevent action to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing us such as climate change, whilst working against workers’ rights, and measures to regulate and tax business

Members of the European Parliament Mr Janusz Wojciechowski Commissioner for Agriculture European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B-1049 Bruxelles Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B-1049 Bruxelles Brussels, 11 November 2020 Subject: Deforestation and illegal logging of Romania’s primary forests Dear Commissioners, we, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, are addressing you to express our deep concerns about massive violations of the protection of Natura 2000 areas, primary and ancient forests and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Romania. In Romania, deforestation caused by illegal logging is continuing on an alarming scale. It threatens the last and irreplaceable primary forests in the EU, which are more crucial than ever in the fight against climate change and for the preservation of biodiversity. According to expert estimates, up to two thirds of the EU’s remaining primary forests are located in Romania. Largely untouched areas in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and the Făgăraș Mountains have survived until today – a European if not global heritage of invaluable ecological value. Some of these forests are also included in the List of World Heritage Sites UNESCO.1 Now, ruthless greed and large-scale corruption are seriously endangering these European natural treasures and the time for protective measures is running out. If no immediate action is taken, the still existing forests will soon be lost forever. Since the launch of the European Commission’s infringement procedure against Romania on 12 February 2020 for failing to establish effective measures against illegal logging2, thousands more hectares were destroyed.
