I hope you are comfortable and safe in this unprecedented situation. As this issue of Gazeta shows, we are determined to carry on our important work in spite of the difficulties created by the COVID-19 virus. We congratulate Zygmunt Stępiński on his appointment as director of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. We are glad that the long-running dispute over the directorship has been brought to an end and look forward to its future flourishing. We are very impressed that the Irene Pipes museum has used the resources of the Internet to continue its activities while it is forced to close to the public. We welcome the publication of volume 32 of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry, which has as its theme “Jews and Music-Making on the Polish Lands.” It deals with an important theme and is divided into five sections, Cantorial and Religious Music, Jews in Polish Popular Culture, Jews in the Polish Classical Musical Scene, The Holocaust Reflected in Jewish Music, and Klezmer in Poland Today. Preparations for volume 33 are well underway and we look forward to its publication. We hope you will find some comfort in the resources our editors and contributors have collected for this special issue, and that the crisis will soon be over so that we can resume normal activity. The author discusses the relationships between Shakespeare’s tragedy and Polish political context as well as the influence of audience expectations in the specific interpretations. The selected performances are: Hamlet by Roman Zawistowski (at the Old Theatre in Cracow 1956) and Hamlet Study by Jerzy Grotowski (at the Laboratory Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole 1964). [All sails up!] (1954) by Radu Tudoran (1910–1992). It is a modern version of the story of the Argonauts, retold in a nineteenth- century setting. The friendship between Orestes and Pylades, and a search for a missing friend, which becomes an original motivation for a sea expedition (a distant echo of the Great Greek Colonisation?), can both be found in Tudo- ran’s novel. It also includes an anecdote about the name of Istanbul, allegedly a distortion of the post-ancient Greek phrase is tin polin, “to the city.” (That charming etymology is in my opinion incorrect. Istanbul is a Turkish version of Stanpoli, an abbreviation of Konstantinoupolis.) The Polish prewar novel Ostatni faraon [The last pharaoh] (1929) by ­Jerzy Mariusz Taylor (1887–1941) (the actual family name of a Polish author, ­journalist, and novelist, who was perhaps a descendant of seventeenth-century foreign settlers) contains a degree of knowledge of the ancient world. The idea of a remnant of ancient Egyptian civilisation surviving somewhere in Africa is very attractive.

    - 1 - Introduction: The Jews of Częstochowa Antony Polonsky Eyleh Ezkerah: And for all these, and all that was, I weep, disconsolate. Yom Kippur liturgy This important and valuable collection of essays is the product of the remarkable exhibition and scholarly conference on the history of the Jews in Częstochowa which was organised in that town in April 2004. The significance of the occasion was highlighted by the presence at its opening of the Stanisław Nowak, Archbishop of Częstochowa, Dr. Tadeusz Wrona, the Mayor of the town, Gerald C. Anderson, the Counsellor at the United States Embassy in Poland Ambassador, David Peleg, the current Israeli Ambassador in Poland, Ambassador Shewach Weiss, his predecessor and former Speaker of the Knesset and Sigmund Rolat and Alan Silberstein of the International Landsmanschaft of Częstochowa Jews and their descendants. The event had not only a moral but also a scholarly dimension. Writing about the problems of investigating the history of the Jews in Poland, one of its pioneers, Mojżesz Schorr wrote in 1903: The main failing of the method which has been employed up to the present in investigating the history of the Jews in Poland is that general questions have been approached before the detailed problems were resolved. Scholars have attempted to describe the history of Jews in the whole of Poland before research had been done on the history of individual towns . Attempts were similarly made to describe the general history of the Jews before the specifics of individual periods had been illuminated.1 This is still very much the case today. Although we do have valuable studies of the history of the Jews in towns like Warsaw, Łódź and Kraków, the life of Jews in medium-sized towns, of which Częstochowa is a good example, is still a somewhat neglected topic.
