Auch in der Wok-Bahn kommt es zum Aufeinandertreffen zwischen den Nachbarländern. Der Wiener Christian Clerici fordert den Kölner Stefan Raab in der Reisschüssel heraus. Für beide wird der Weg zum Wok-WM-Titel nur über Wok-Legende Georg Hackl führen. Der „Wokl Schorsch“ hofft als amtierender Weltmeister auf sein insgesamt siebtes Gold im Wok. Deutsch-österreichisch zeigt sich auch das Moderatorenteam: Die gebürtige Innsbruckerin Mirjam Weichselbraun interviewt die Wok-Piloten am Start, Sonya Kraus empfängt die Fahrer im Ziel und Matthias Opdenhövel führt als Moderator durch den sportiven Abend. Neben den beiden Eurovision-Song-Contest-Teilnehmerinnen Nadine Beiler und Lena treten im Rahmen der „TV total WOK WM 2011“ Nena mit „Nur geträumt“ und Flo Rida mit „Turn Around 5, 4 ,3, 2, 1“ an. Zur „TV total WOK WM 2011“: Zum neunten Mal versammelt Stefan Raab prominente Fahrer aus Sport und Unterhaltung zu seiner Reisschüsselweltmeisterschaft. Der neue Weltmeister wird sowohl im Einer-Wok (amtierender Weltmeister: Georg Hackl) und im Vierer Wok (amtierender Weltmeister: Wok TV total mit u.a. Stefan Raab) ermittelt. Zum insgesamt vierten Mal steigt die „TV total WOK WM“ in diesem Jahr auf der Olympia Bob-, Rodel- und Skeletonbahn in Innsbruck/Igls. Die Bahn ist mit ihren 14 bis zu sieben Meter hohen Kurven und einem Kreisel auf der 1270 Meter langen Bahn eine der anspruchsvollsten und bekanntesten Wintersport- Rennstrecken der Welt. Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

Manzón-Omundson Anoka-Ramsey Community College Recent studies on the second language (L2) acquisition of irony and humor indi- cate that learners both use and recognize verbal irony in the target language and suggest that the ability to understand irony and to engage in verbal humor increases with greater language proficiency (Bell, 2005, 2006; Bouton, 1999; Cook, 2000; Davies, 2003). While the study of irony has enjoyed a long history in linguistics and the topic of humor in an L2 has received some attention in the field of SLA, few studies have specifically analyzed the understanding of irony by L2 learners. The objective of the present study was to examine the interpretation of ironic utterances in Spanish-language films by L2 learners of Spanish and the impact of an audiovisual context on the ability of learners to interpret irony. The results of the study support previous work on irony and humor in L2 learning in suggesting that the recognition of irony improves as proficiency level and experience with the target language increase. Furthermore, the hypothesis that the greater number of audio and visual sources available to the listener will make irony easier to process and identify (Yus Ramos, 1998; 2000) was only weakly supported and only for the more advanced learners in this study.
