Written for Street Railway Association Banquet, Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. i8gj. I know a maid—a sweet surprise Of loveliness the essence, Whoever meets her sparkling eyes, She turns to incandescence. Softly, as melts the foam on "fizz," Her influence sinuating, Your watch don't know what time it is, She is so fascinating. I got a shock, when first we met, But knew not how to take her; Now I'm all right, I don't forget To wear my circuit-breaker. Her wit is keen, her brilliant mind Like playful thunderbolts; Who sparks this girl of mine will find He's struck five hundred volts. I long to be the "favorite"— I'll not to others yield, Yet it's no use to play for it When she "excites the field." Her tresses coiled with nicest care; Her switch great credit does her; How can you with my belle compare Some other fellow's buzzer. She's gentleness itself till crossed, But once lose her controller She blows her fuse, her head is lost, And then she's a high roller. Marvelously she flashes green When jealousies surprise her, But quickly glides to happy mean— She's got an equalizer. She's positive like other lov:s— How gentle her induction; Best handle her with rubber gloves, Or you'll invite destruction. -

Legends of Devil's Lake
Legends of Devil's Lake A Legend of Devil's Lake Nestled close down between wild, rocky hills, And back from it, with a gentle swell, Feeding no rivers, and fed from no rills, Stretches a forest, where song birds dwell, Devil's Lake lies like a jewel rare, And squirrels play in the checkered shade Dropped from the ocean's casket there. By its Maple boughs, and old Oaks made. Here, in those years of which we are told, On the stern gray rocks--they'd forgotten where-- So many legends and stories old, By wandering nymphs of the upper air. But, though forgotten, and bound to the place, Camped for a while a roving band By the unyielding clasp of its shore's rude embrace, Of Indians, by the lakelet's strand, And, with the maidens of the tribe, Like a sad, prisoned spirit, it still seemed to be Bathed in its crystal water Ever murmuring low for its home in the sea; Ke-she-ah-ben-o-qua, (The Early Dawn) their chieftain's only And in pity, perchance, for the painful unrest, daughter. That at times heaved so wildly its beautiful breast, Slender her form, her motions full of grace, Pines have grown up midst the rocks on its shore, As full of strange dark beauty her delicate young face-- And whispers to it of the ocean's deep roar, Dark as though a shadow from the midnight of her hair, As fanciful breezes, with fingers unseen, Enamoured by its loveliness, was softly sleeping there. Toss their dark boughs into wavelets of green. -

Its aim is to present short books written by the most conscious and responsible minds of today. Each volume represents the thought and belief of each author and sets forth the interrelation of the changing religious, scientific, artistic, political, economic and social influences upon man's total experience. This Series is committed to a re-examination of all those sides of human endeavor which the specialist was taught to believe he could safely leave aside. It interprets present and past events impinging on human life in our growing World Age and envisages what man may yet attain when sum- moned by an unbending inner necessity to the quest of what is most exalted in him. -

It's four in the morning and frcm where we sit, this Final Issue looks like a keeper. We've put a ton of time and energyinto this particular edition, and we think you'll have lots of fun with the overview. After all, with some 90 + stations responding to our sur- vey, it's basically your window on RockWorld as it went down this past year. The first year of any new business is hell on wheels, (Groanong, creaking, barking dog sound efx, please) and we've seen quite a parade in '87. When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come. -
