Legends of Devil's Lake A Legend of Devil's Lake Nestled close down between wild, rocky hills, And back from it, with a gentle swell, Feeding no rivers, and fed from no rills, Stretches a forest, where song birds dwell, Devil's Lake lies like a jewel rare, And squirrels play in the checkered shade Dropped from the ocean's casket there. By its Maple boughs, and old Oaks made. Here, in those years of which we are told, On the stern gray rocks--they'd forgotten where-- So many legends and stories old, By wandering nymphs of the upper air. But, though forgotten, and bound to the place, Camped for a while a roving band By the unyielding clasp of its shore's rude embrace, Of Indians, by the lakelet's strand, And, with the maidens of the tribe, Like a sad, prisoned spirit, it still seemed to be Bathed in its crystal water Ever murmuring low for its home in the sea; Ke-she-ah-ben-o-qua, (The Early Dawn) their chieftain's only And in pity, perchance, for the painful unrest, daughter. Employing Critical Race Theory as the theoretical framework, each counties’ analysis results are examined. The concepts of race, systemic racism, White privilege and interest-convergence are used to assess both counties continuance of sustaining a racially imbalanced historical narrative. I posit that the construction of history of Bates County and Cass County continues to influence and reinforces systemic racism in the local narrative. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans. -

Masters i Constructing the Sensorium: Neoliberalism and Aesthetic Practice in Immersive Theatre A dissertation submitted by Paul Masters in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Drama Tufts University May 2016 Adviser: Natalya Baldyga Masters ii Abstract: Associated with a broad range of theatrical events and experiences, the term immersive has become synonymous with an experiential, spectacle-laden brand of contemporary theatre. From large-scale productions such as Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More (2008, 2011) to small-scale and customizable experiences (Third Rail Projects, Shunt, and dreamthinkspeak), marketing campaigns and critical reviews cite immersion as both a descriptive and prescriptive term. Examining technologies and conventions drawn from a range of so-called immersive events, this project asks how these productions refract and replicate the technological and ideological constructs of the digital age. Traversing disciplines such as posthumanism, contemporary art, and gaming studies, immersion represents an extension of a cultural landscape obsessed with simulated realities and self-surveillance. As an aesthetic, immersive events rely on sensual experiences, narrative agency, and media installations to convey the presence and atmosphere of otherworldly spaces. By turns haunting, visceral, and seductive spheres of interaction, these theatres also engage in a neoliberal project: one that pretends to greater freedoms than traditional theater while delimiting freedom and concealing the boundaries -

Quantrill, “Bloody Bill”, “Little Archie” & All That Visit Sites Where Bushwhackers Rode 3 the Old Trails During the Civil War. Begin at Fayette. The Battle of Fayette occurred on Sept. 24, 1864, when a large force of guerrillas led by Fayette to Kearney. “Bloody Bill” Anderson and George Todd assaulted a fortified Union garrison. A wayside marker with information on the battle and a map is adjacent to the Student and Community Center on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette. Three days after the Battle of Fayette, Anderson’s men halted a train at Centralia (east of the Old Trails Region in Boone County) and, executed the 24 unarmed Union soldiers aboard. Later that day, the guerrillas annihilated a unit of mounted Union infantry and left 116 dead on the field. Take Hwy 5 and then Hwy 40 south from Fayette to Boonville. On Oct. 11, 1864, Anderson, Todd and Quantrill met Gen. Sterling Price and his army of invasion at Boonville. Anderson had human scalps from the Centralia Massacre hanging on his belt, which Price made him remove. Continue south on Hwy 40 through Boonville to I-70 and go west. At Exit 62, get off at Emma. The day before joining Price at Boonville, bushwhackers led by George Todd attacked members of the German community here, known to be Union Quantrill, supporters. Older men and four teenagers took up arms to defend their families. Most were shot, skulls were crushed, and some were burned alive. A recently erected monument near Holy Cross Lutheran Church “Bloody Bill”, commemorates the event. -

BOY BANDS AND THE PERFORMANCE OF POP MASCULINITY Boy Bands and the Performance of Pop Masculinity provides a history of the boy band from the Beatles to One Direction, placing the modern male pop group within the wider context of twentieth- and twenty-first-century popular music and culture. Offering the first extended look at pop masculinity as exhibited by boy bands, this volume links the evolving expressions of gender and sexuality in the boy band to wider economic and social changes that have resulted in new ways of representing what it is to be a man. The popularity of boy bands is unquestionable, and their contributions to popular music are significant, yet they have attracted relatively little study. This book fills that gap with chapters exploring the challenges of defining the boy band phenomenon, its origins and history from the 1940s to the present, the role of management and marketing, the performance of gender and sexuality, and the nature of fandom and fan agency. Throughout, the author illuminates the ways in which identity politics influence the production and consumption of pop music and shows how the mainstream pop of boy bands can both rein- force and subvert gender and class hierarchies. Georgina Gregory is Senior Lecturer for Film and Media at the University of Central Lancashire, where she teaches modules on popular music and youth culture. The first year of any new business is hell on wheels, (Groanong, creaking, barking dog sound efx, please) and we've seen quite a parade in '87. When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come.
