Religion in India: a Historical Introduction
Religion in India Religion in India is an ideal first introduction to India’s fascinating and varied religious history. Fred W. Clothey surveys the religions of India from prehistory through the modern period. Exploring the interactions between different religious movements over time, and engaging with some of the liveliest debates in religious studies, he examines the rituals, mythologies, arts, ethics, and social and cultural contexts of religion as lived in the past and present on the subcontinent. Key topics discussed include: • Hinduism, its origins, context and development over time • Other religions (such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Buddhism) and their interactions with Hinduism • The influences of colonialism on Indian religion • The spread of Indian religions in the rest of the world • The practice of religion in everyday life, including case studies of pilgrimages, festivals, temples, and rituals, and the role of women Written by an experienced teacher, this student-friendly textbook is full of clear, lively discussion and vivid examples. Complete with maps and illustrations, and useful pedagogical features, including timelines, a comprehensive glossary, and recommended further reading specific to each chapter, this is an invaluable resource for students beginning their studies of Indian religions. Fred W. Clothey is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He is author and co-editor of numerous books and articles. He is the co-founder of the Journal of Ritual Studies and is also a documentary filmmaker. Religion in India A Historical Introduction Fred W. Old Gods, New Religions, and Modern Marriages in Nepal
OLD GODS, NEW RELIGIONS, AND MODERN MARRIAGES IN NEPAL Emily McKendry-Smith A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Sociology. Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Lisa D. Pearce Jacqueline Hagan Kenneth (Andy) Andrews Philip N. Cohen Christian Smith © 2013 Emily McKendry-Smith ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Emily McKendry-Smith: Old Gods, New Religions, and Modern Marriages in Nepal (Under the direction of Lisa Pearce) This dissertation is a set of three papers broadly focused on the role of religion in a context of rapid social change associated with modernization and development. My research design comprises two areas of data collection at three Brahma Kumari centers in Chitwan, Nepal: participant observation at daily religious services and in-depth interviews with female devotees. I complement this with statistical analyses on spousal choice and religious salience using survey data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study. In the first chapter I address the paradox that in Nepal, religion appears to be shifting from individual to communal worship, in contrast to the belief of many scholars that modernity has a privatizing and individualizing effect on religion. I find that due to unique features of Nepali homes, the role of puja in Nepali society, and perceptions of the Brahma Kumaris lead to a case where puja in the home is public and congregational meditation is private. In the second chapter, I address how the Brahma Kumaris frame their movement in relation to value-laden ideas about modernity and how this framing influences acceptance of their “strict” demands. -

Faith-Inspired Organizations and Global Development
FAITH-INSPIRED ORGANIZATIONS AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT POLICY: A BACKGROUND REVIEW "MAPPING" SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WORK IN SOUTH AND CENTRAL ASIA 1 About this Report This draft background report was prepared as part of the Berkley Center’s global “mapping” of the work of faith-inspired organizations worldwide. The report serves as background for the consultation on faith- inspired organizations and global development policy in South and Central Asia in Dhaka, Bangladesh on January 10-11, 2011. The South and Central Asia review is part of a comparative project on Religion and Global Development supported by the Henry R. Luce Foundation. Through a series of meetings with stakeholders and background reports, the Berkley Center and WFDD have worked to ‘“map’” the role of faithinspired organizations around the world, highlighting best practices and policy issues that arise. Prior events have included: a meeting in Washington, DC in April 2007 focused on the United States; a meeting in Doha, Qatar in December 2007 focused on the Muslim World; a meeting in The Hague, The Netherlands in June 2008 focused on Europe and Africa; a meeting in Antigua, Guatemala in January 2009, focused on Latin America; and a meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in December 2009 focused on Southeast Asia. About the Authors The report was prepared by a team of researchers at the Berkeley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the World Faiths Development Dialogue. The principal author is Michael Bodakowski, working under the supervision of Katherine Marshall. Sarah Singha, graduate research assistant at the Berkley Center, contributed significantly, as did Elizabeth LaFerriere.
