More than 8 months after the official request which arose from an NCCI GHT workshop, at least 4 consultants have been working these weeks in Amman to I update the Interagency Consolidated Plan, and the contingency plans of L UNHCR, UNICEF and WHO. We welcome these initiatives showing that UN agencies are realizing what the H needs on the ground are. In addition, these sudden actions might denote that Agencies are expecting a further deterioration of the situation and would like to G improve their preparedness. Fair enough. I But we would have more welcomed a coordinated strategy instead of a competition between agencies. Moreover increased coordination would have certainly been more efficient. Indeed, the gathering and integrating of all H initiatives, ideas and efforts is needed to seek solutions to the problems posed Y by the difficulties of access or by the military approach of the “humanitarian intervention” which jeopardizes humanitarian organisations’ efforts.     INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY STATEMENT BY FORMER CPT CAPTIVES NORMAN KEMBER, JAMES LONEY, AND HARMEET SINGH SOODEN December 8, 2006; London We three, members of a Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) delegation to Iraq, were kidnapped on November 26, 2005 and held for 118 days before being freed by British and American forces on March 23, 2006. Our friend and colleague, Tom Fox, an American citizen and full-time member of the CPT team working in Baghdad at the time, was kidnapped with us and murdered on March 9, 2006. We are immensely sad that he is not sitting with us here today. On behalf of our families and CPT, we thank you for attending this press conference today. It was on this day a year ago that our captors threatened to execute us unless their demands were met. This ultimatum, unknown to us at the time, was a source of extreme distress for our families, friends and colleagues. The deadline was extended by two days to December 10, which is International Human Rights Day. On this day, people all over the world will commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in 1948 by speaking out for all those whose human dignity is being violated by torture, arbitrary imprisonment, poverty, racism, oppression or war. Yoder * Received: 27/07/2018 Accepted: 25/10/2018 DOI: 10.22096/HR.2019.105288.1106 Abstract This paper will explore the links between religion and human rights as embodied in the work and mission of the Christian Peacemaker Teams ʚCPTʛ and Muslim Peacemaker Teams ʚMPTʛ. The paper compares models such as those of theorists Margaret Keck and Kathryn Sikkink in providing a framework in which to understand, critique and build on the work of CPT and MPT. The CPT and MPT groups “get in the way” of violence through placing themselves in conflict situations for the purpose of reducing all forms of violence against civilians. Born out of the “Peace Church” traditions of Christianity in the 1980s, the movement has expanded to spark formation of the less formalized Muslim Peacemaker Team. The two groups now collaborate through shared training exercises and goals. CPT and MPT present a unique example of the integration of religion and human rights. While CPT have worked more extensively and published their experiences more broadly, both groups exemplify the potential synergy of groups who draw on religion in order to advance human rights. As CPT has a more formalized organizational structure, the paper focuses on this group in order to lay out principles from which both operate.

Background The Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) web page says it is an organization offering, “an organized, nonviolent alternative to war ... (and) organizational support to persons committed to faith-based nonviolent alternatives in situations where lethal conflict is an immediate reality or is supported by public policy.” CPT members currently have observers in conflict areas around the world, including the Palestinian Territories, Colombia, Burundi and eastern Congo. CPT began sending observers to Iraq in October 2002, six months before the beginning of the U.S. led invasion in March of 2003. The focus focus of that CPT team, for the 18 months following the invasion, was documenting and highlighting human rights and detainee abuse issues. On November 26, 2005, CPT members James Loney, 41, Harmeet Sooden, 32 (both Canadians), Norman Kember of Britain, 74, and American Tom Fox, 54, were kidnapped from a Baghdad street while leaving a mosque.

    Statement in support of Christian Peacemaker Teams, a group that stands with the Iraqi people, by Canadian Friends Service Committee December 2, 2005 Canadian Friends Service Committee is the peace and service agency of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Canada. We state our unqualified support for the integrity and non-violent, peaceful purposes of the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) and the four CPT team members serving in Iraq (Tom Fox, James Loney, Norman Kember, and Harmeet Sadoon) who are currently being held by the Swords of Righteous Brigade in Iraq. Canadian Friends Service Committee—like the four CPT team members—rejects the use of violence for any purpose. We condemned the War on Iraq (recognizing its start as 1991, including the years of oppressive sanctions, and then the resurgence of outright war in 2003). Quakers in Canada have participated in various CPT teams, including in Iraq. Team members have always sought to educate Canadians and others about the truth of the awful war and occupation in Iraq and how it must end. CPT has always been a friend to the oppressed, be that in Iraq, Palestine, or Aboriginal territories in Canada and Colombia. CPT seeks to reduce violence and to advocate on behalf of the human rights of all Iraqis. We recognize the pain that is facing the people of Iraq and our friends of the Muslim faith through the occupation of both Iraq and Palestine and the history of colonization in the Middle East. We mourn alongside our brothers and sisters of the Muslim faith and seek a peaceful Iraq, led by Iraqis.
