Western Performing Arts in the Late Ottoman Empire: Accommodation and Formation Özgecan Karadağlı While books such as Larry Wolff’s The Singing Turk: Ottoman Power and Operatic Emotions on the European Stage offer an understanding of the musicological role of Ottoman-Turks in eighteenth-century European operatic traditions and popular culture,1 the musical influence and significance going the other way is often overlooked, minimised, and misunderstood. In the nineteenth century, Ottoman sultans were establishing theatres in their palaces, cities were hosting theatres and opera houses, and an Ottoman was writing the first Ottoman opera (1874). This article will examine this gap in the history of Western music, including opera, in the Ottoman period, and the slow amalgamation of Western and Ottoman musical elements that arose during the Ottoman Empire. This will enable the reader to gauge the developments that eventually marked the break between the Ottoman era and early twentieth-century modern Turkey. Because even the words ‘Ottoman Empire’ are enough to create a typical orientalist image, it is important to build a cultural context and address critical blind spots. It is an oft- repeated misunderstanding that Western music was introduced into modern-day Turkey after 1 Larry Wolff, The Singing Turk: Ottoman Power and Operatic Emotions on the European Stage (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 2016). 17 18 Context 46 (2020): Karadağlı the proclamation of the Republic in 1923.2 As this article will demonstrate, the intercultural interaction gave rise to institutional support, and as Western music became a popular and accepted genre in the Ottoman Empire of the nineteenth century,3 it influenced political and creative aspirations through the generation of new nationalist music for the Turkish Republic.4 Intercultural Interaction: Pre-Tanzimat and İstibdat Periods, 1828–1908 Although Western music arrived in the Empire in the sixteenth century,5 it took almost two and a half centuries to become established.

  • International Organizations and Globalizations of Russian Regions
International Organizations and Globalization of Russian Regions Introduction Why is it so important to raise the issue of globalization for Russia and her regions? Despite the underdevelopment of Russia’s version of globalization, the international community in general and specific foreign countries in particular do have their impact on internal developments in Russia. Sometimes the effects of globalization are not visible enough, but they cannot be disregarded. In spite of his inward-oriented rhetoric, President Putin’s federal reform launched in May 2000 to some extent was inspired by developments outside Russia. These were the foreign investors who were confused by the tug-of-war between the federal center and the regions, and who called for a reshuffle of the federal system in Russia to avoid conflicts between federal and regional laws and get rid of regional autarchy. What is also telling is that Putin intends to implement his federal reform in accordance with formal democratic procedures, keeping in mind Western sensitivity to these issues. The shift of power from the center to the regional actors was the major development in Russian politics in the beginning of the 1990s. Yet the Russian regions are not equal players on the international scene. Not all of them are capable of playing meaningful roles internationally, and these roles can be quite different for each one. Three groups of constituent parts of the Federation ought to be considered as the most important Russian sub-national actors in the international arena. The first group comprises those regions with a strong export potential (industrial regions or those rich in mineral resources[1]).

9. • Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland As Cultural Mediators
Chapter 10 Connectivity, Mobility, and Mediterranean “Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland as Cultural Mediators Gülru Necipoğlu Considering the mobility of persons and stones is one way to reflect upon how movable or portable seemingly stationary archaeological sites might be. Dalmatia, here viewed as a center of gravity between East and West, was cen- tral for the global vision of Ottoman imperial ambitions, which peaked during the 16th century. Constituting a fluid “border zone” caught between the fluctu- ating boundaries of three early modern empires—Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian Habsburg—the Dalmatian coast of today’s Croatia and its hinterland occupied a vital position in the geopolitical imagination of the sultans. The Ottoman aspiration to reunite the fragmented former territories of the Roman Empire once again brought the eastern Adriatic littoral within the orbit of a tri-continental empire, comprising the interconnected arena of the Balkans, Crimea, Anatolia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. It is important to pay particular attention to how sites can “travel” through texts, drawings, prints, objects, travelogues, and oral descriptions. To that list should be added “traveling” stones (spolia) and the subjective medium of memory, with its transformative powers, as vehicles for the transmission of architectural knowledge and visual culture. I refer to the memories of travelers, merchants, architects, and ambassadors who crossed borders, as well as to Ottoman pashas originating from Dalmatia and its hinterland, with their extraordinary mobility within the promotion system of a vast eastern Mediterranean empire. To these pashas, circulating from one provincial post to another was a prerequisite for eventually rising to the highest ranks of vizier and grand vizier at the Imperial Council in the capital Istanbul, also called Ḳosṭanṭiniyye (Constantinople).

Population and Econo mics 4(2): 182-198. https://doi.org/10.3897/popecon.4.e54577 Abstract Measures taken by most countries to limit the coronavirus infection spread include self-isolation. An option of voluntary restriction of personal contacts for citizens is to move to the country (second or third) houses, which have a particular name in Russia – “dacha”. The demand for country estates as places of self-isolation can be assessed as the emergence of a new sanitary-epidemic function in second homes. Institutional management of such movements in connection with the coronavirus pandemic varies by country, ranging from prohibition (Norway) to encouragement (Belarus), and quantitative indicators (mass character or singleness) fluctuate according to lifestyle, national traditions, characteristics of settlement, urban housing policy, public health opportunities and many other factors. For Russians, the migration of residents of megalopolises from the city to country houses was a re- action to the pandemic, a characteristic social-group strategy of health-preserving behaviour. Several million Muscovites, Petersburgers, as well as residents of other megacities of Russia moved outside the cities immediately after the outbreak of the pandemic. “Half-townspeople” – internal migrant workers and “seasonal workers” (workers living in villages or small towns but working in metropolises in watch mode) also moved to rural areas.

In the Croatian lands that came under Ottoman rule, the legal position of Catholics was built on the model of Muhammad's order towards those who recognized his political power and possessed »holy books« and did not accept Islam. The conqueror of Bosnia, Sultan Mehmed II gave the Bosnian Franciscans Hatisherif the so-called Ahdnama, by which he guaranteed to the Franciscans personal inviolability and freedom of religious activity, and to the Christian population unhindered possession of property and freedom of residence in the area of his authority. It was a pragmatic act, because despite the legal guarantees, the position of Catholics and Franciscans was very difficult. Wars with Christian, mostly Catholic countri- es, often provoked terrible retaliation. The Franciscans were the only Catholic priests in the area under Ottoman rule. Although they often suffered great injustices from state and local Ottoman powerful people and resisted the proselytizing efforts of Orthodox bishops, they expanded their activities beyond the borders of medieval Bosnia.
