The US gold medal-winning swimmers hoped to draw a line under the scandal that erupt- ed when Lochte went public with a shocking report of how the four were mugged on their way back from a party in Rio de Janeiro. The claim that a man posing as a police officer held them up at gunpoint early Sunday and forced them to the ground sparked a media frenzy and pushed Brazilian Olympic authorities into an embarrassed apology. But after police declared the story was fabricated - saying all that happened was that the swimmers were subdued by security after getting drunk and vandalizing a gas station bathroom - the now discredited Lochte finally came clean. “I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors and the hosts of this great event,” Lochte said in a statement. Late Thursday, US Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun also apologized “to our hosts in Rio and the people of Brazil for this dis- tracting ordeal in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence”. Exploring the Relationship between Skin Tone and Self-Esteem Among Females in South Asian Families in India: A Multigenerational Comparison by Priya Lena Sharda A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Priya Lena Sharda, 2020 i Exploring the Relationship Between Skin Tone and Self-Esteem Among Females in South Asian Families in India: A Multigenerational Comparison Priya Lena Sharda Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2020 Abstract Colourism or skin colour stratification is a persistent dilemma for people in India. Socially and culturally constructed definitions of beauty based on skin tone, represent Western realities and continue to sustain beauty ideals that shape the beliefs and practices around fair skin for women. The study of skin tone and its relationship to self-esteem is essential in expanding upon the limited research examining the intersections between body image and the sociocultural experiences of South Asian Indian women. Against the backdrop of Western hegemony, the research discusses how a fair skin beauty ideal impacts different generations of women in New Delhi. More specifically, investigating the relationship between skin tone and self-esteem among women in South Asian families through a multigenerational comparison, provides a deeper understanding of how skin tone bias is perpetuated, while reinforcing and normalizing white heteropatriarchy. Skin tone bias is disseminated through the family, culture and media. The narratives highlight how skin tone bias manifests itself among adult women in different South Asian family units according to their life stage and membership in the family.

  • Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber
Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994). That the pleasures associated with film going have influenced consumption in India is also true; the impact of film on various fashion trends is recognized by scholars (Dwyer and Patel, 2002, pp.

  • The Trump-Russia Collusion Case
The Trump-Russia Collusion Case Updated to August 2020 Source: http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/trumptraitor.html For those who have been following this page for a while: my main target is not Trump, my target is Putin. Putin, not Trump, is the most dangerous person in the world. Trump is just a lackey, a small-time crook and bit-time liar whom Putin is using to attack the USA. The problem is not that there is no evidence of Trump-Putin collusion, the problem is that there is too much of it. I have added some background about the motive of Russia's interference in US politics. In my opinion, it was not only a general attempt at undermining US institutions (that came later) but originally it was a determined effort to make sure that Hillary Clinton did not become president. Putin feared her more than anyone else. For those who have NOT followed this page from the beginning: this website was one of the first to talk about the Trump-Russia collusion at a time when few dared mention the Steele dossier. Just to be very clear: this is not about whether Russia's interference changed the results of the election (i personally think that the FBI investigation into Clinton's email server had a much bigger impact). It is about Putin's strategy to attack the USA, and, secondly, it is about the extent of Trump's collaboration with Putin. And, just to be fair, Putin's Russia is not the only country that ever interfered in US politics.

  • Leicester City Beat Chelsea to Claim 'Historic' First FA
Established 1961 15 Sports Monday, May 17, 2021 Leicester City beat Chelsea to claim ‘historic’ first FA Cup LONDON: Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the “historical achievement” of his side in beating Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday to lift the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s 137-year history. Youri Tielemans’s sensational winner was witnessed by 22,000 fans at Wembley. The largest crowd for a sports event in England since the coronavirus pan- demic hit 14 months ago were treated to a goal wor- thy to win any trophy as the Belgian midfielder blast- ed into the top corner on 63 minutes. Five years after the Foxes stunned the Premier League’s giants to become champions, Leicester have now claimed English football’s other prestigious trophy at the fifth time of asking. Four times they had previously lost the final, but the last of those was 52 years ago. “It’s a historical day for the football club,” said Rodgers. “Winning the FA Cup for the first time. I’m so happy for the players and supporters. They’ve lost four finals and now a fifth time we’ve managed to do it for them.” A historic week for Rodgers’s men could get even better as they are on the verge of sealing a place in next season’s Champions League. The sides meet again in three days’ time at Stamford Bridge in a pivotal clash to decide who secures a top-four finish in the Premier League. And Rodgers suggested his side were the neu- trals favorites as they aim to upset the applecart of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ once more.
