FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 2019 PINATUBO: A CHAMPION IN THE MAKING GALILEO FILLY LIGHTS UP By Emma Berry BOOK 1 CLOSER It has been quite the year for Shamardal. Not only has he been represented by G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Castle Lady (Ire) and the two Royal Ascot victories in five days of Blue Point (Ire) but, portentously for next year's Classics, he is the sire of three unbeaten Group 1-winning juveniles: Pinatubo (Ire), Earthlight (Ire) and Victor Ludorum (GB). The trio emanates from a crop of just 82 foals in 2017. While Earthlight has already won twice at the highest level for Andre Fabre, and his stablemate Victor Ludorum added the G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere to the list on Sunday, it is the Charlie Appleby-trained Pinatubo who heads the ratings for all European juveniles and has sent correspondents scrabbling for superlatives. At the conclusion of Book 1 of the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented, AThere have been some spectacular highlights at Book 1 of the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale including two outstanding colts breaking the 3-million guineas mark with the Dubawi colt out of Alina achieving the highest price for a yearling colt in the world this year.@ Cont. p2 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 2 OF 21 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 11 OCTOBER 2019 TATTERSALLS OCTOBER YEARLING SALE BOOK 1 DAY 3 SESSION TOTALS 2019 2018 $ Catalogued 184 173 $ Number Offered 162 157 $ Number Sold 129 130 $ Not Sold 33 27 $ Clearance Rate 80% 83% $ No. 500Kgns+ 26 12 $ High Price 2,100,000gns 1,200,000gns $ Gross 35,063,000gns, 30,054,000gns $ Average (% change) 271,806 (+18%) 231,185gns $ Median (% change) 150,000 (NC) 150,000gns CUMULATIVE 2019 2018 $ Catalogued 552 519 $ Number Offered 483 456 $ Number Sold 397 392 $ Not Sold 86 64 $ Clearance Rate 82% 86% $ No. 500Kgns+ 55 59 $ High Price 3,600,000gns 3,500,000gns $ Gross 102,429,000gns 106,503,000gns $ Average (% change) 258,008gns (-5%) 271,691gns $ Median (% change) 150,000gns (-10%) 167,500gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 Cont. from p1 He said, AIn total we have had 10 yearlings make 1-million guineas or more reflecting the extraordinary quality of the yearlings assembled for Book 1 and we have welcomed buyers from throughout the world, all of whom are drawn to the sale by its unrivalled reputation as Europe=s premier yearling sale. AAfter eight consecutive years of growth with turnover rising from 51 million guineas in 2011 to last year's massive 106 million guineas, the aggregate has fallen a little short this year, but the sale has still produced turnover in excess of 100 million guineas which is the second-highest in the sale=s history and yet again a huge tribute to the vendors who have brought the cream of the European yearling crop to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. We are fortunate to have so many of the world=s top stallions currently standing in Europe with five of them, Dubawi, Frankel, Galileo, Kingman and Siyouni all producing yearlings which have sold for a million guineas or more this week and there is no doubt that the global achievements of these stallions play a big role in attracting so many overseas buyers.@ Cont. p3 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 3 OF 21 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 11 OCTOBER 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 Leading Sires by Average (three or more sold) Rank Name Lots Average (gns) Aggregate (gns) 1 Galileo (Ire) 15 646,667 9,700,000 2 Dubawi (Ire) 23 574,565 13,215,000 3 Frankel (GB) 22 468,182 10,300,000 Vice President, International Operations 4 Siyouni (Fr) 10 414,000 4,140,000 Gary King 5 Kingman (GB) 29 382,655 11,097,000 Twitter: @garykingTDN 6 Le Havre (Ire) 5 361,000 1,805,000 [email protected] 7 Lope de Vega (Ire) 15 314,667 4,720,000 + 1.732.320.0975 8 Sea The Stars (Ire) 22 310,682 6,835,000 9 Dark Angel (Ire) 20 283,750 5,675,000 International Editor 10 Shamardal 7 263,571 1,845,000 Kelsey Riley Twitter: @kelseynrileyTDN Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 Cont.
