SMART DEVICE OVERVIEW

Cognive Prosthec Device

• Any electronic based product or system, whether acquired as a retail item, a modified retail item, or a customized one, that is used by an individual to compensate for cognive-communicaon impairments that affect his/her ability to parcipate in acvies of daily living (ADLs) and higher level ADLs (IADLs) including work. • Such devices include: – Smart Phones – Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) – with alarm features – Pagers with reminder features, etc.

Cognive Prosthec

• Smart devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Windows Mobile devices) are being used as cognive prosthecs. The concept of using a smart device as a cognive prosthec for cognive issues faced aer damage to the brain is analogous to how amputees rounely use mechanical limbs, etc to help aer injury. • Smart devices can be used to keep a calendar and/or todo list, take pictures, idenfy current locaon and get direcons, set alarms for daily tasks, record audio, play music, etc. • Gartner predicts that will outnumber personal computers by 2013. In addion, it is esmated that as many as 82 million Americans will use tablet computers by 2015. According to the Pew Research Center ~60% of Americans accessed the Internet from their phones last year as compared to only 25% in 2009.
