Family, friends and members of the Archaeological Society of Alberta were greatly saddened by the sudden passing of Marshall Dzurko in April this past year. His contributions as a regular member and years of service on the Calgary Center and Provincial Executives will be greatly missed.

Born as the oldest son of Andrew and Florence Dzurko, Marshall grew up in the hamlet of Willingdon, Alberta where his father worked as a blacksmith and ran the general store. His early years in this small Ukrainian and Romanian pioneering community instilled in Marshall many of the values that shaped his life, including his strength of charac ter and stoic perseverance. After completing a degree in Education at the University of Alberta Marshall took up a teaching position in Oyen in 1954. Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in south-central Alberta is home to one of the most impressive and important collections of Aboriginal rock art found anywhere in western North America. Owing to this great legacy of rock art nestled in a sacred and spectacular landscape, Writing-on-Stone has been declared a Provincial Historic Site and a National Historic Site of Canada. Yet images of Aboriginal origin are not the only inscriptions carved into the soft sandstone bedrock walls. Surely all modern visitors to the rock art sites have been distressed to note the sometimes extensive intrusion of graffiti left by those who felt compelled to leave their own marks on the rocks—names, dates, places, hometowns, girlfriends . Today we quite correctly call this these inscriptions wanton vandalism, and condemn it unequivocally. But what if the non-Native markings are old, really old?
