The reasons for Lady Mary's self-imposed exile have been a subject of speculation for scholars from that day to the present. Thanks to the research efforts of Robert Halsband it can now be stated that the principal reason was the love affair between Lady Mary and a twenty-five-year old Italian prince, Count Francesco Algarotti.
