[email protected] ABSTRACT The estimation of past sea-ice cover has been improved recently by advances in diatom ecology, biogeography, and taxonomy and in the satellite imagery of sea ice. Diatoms live in and around sea ice, are sensitive to sea ice, and are widely distributed as microfossils in Southern Ocean sediments; thus, they provide the best tool available for re- constructing sea-ice cover and oceano- graphic features in Antarctic regions. New approaches use diatoms to recon- struct sea ice through the late Quater- Divergent winter pack ice illustrating areas of open water between floes that have started to refreeze with a thin cover of nilas. Recent ecological studies have shown that sea-ice diatom communities are nary from core sites in the Southern differentiated by variations in the type of sea ice formed and the changes that occur over the seasonal Ocean. Memorial to Vladimir Joseph Okulitch 1906-1995 W ALTER W. N A SSICH UK Geological Survey o f Canada, 3303 - 33rd Street N. W., Calgary, Alberta T2L 2A7, Canada Vladimir J. Okulitch died of a heart attack in Calgary on August 31, 1995, in his 90th year. Thus, Canada and the world of science lost an extraordinary geologist, teacher, astronomer, and university administrator. I lost my first teacher in paleontology and a longtime friend. Vladimir was focused on geology, but his interests extended beyond the earth to all the stars in the universe. He was a naturalist in the true sense, and for decades he observed and pho tographed the changing earth, its rocks, rivers, mountains, and all living things. Photography was a passion all his life, and his work was exhibited at amateur and profes sional shows throughout North America. Above all, Vladimir was a warm and gentle humanist with an easy ability to laugh, and he was beloved as a teacher and an administrator. Not surprisingly, he had a holistic view of the evolving earth and all its life forms. He stressed the need to understand the interdependence of geology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, and biology in the resolution of earth science problems. He beamed with enthusiasm when he taught paleontology, and it always seemed clear to students that the study of life on earth, past and present, was special in his heart. Vladimir Okulitch was bom on June 18, 1906, in St. Petersburg, Russia. His schooling in St. Petersburg was rigorous in the classical style, and each school day classes in languages, mathematics, the sciences, and history were followed by tutorials in every subject. -
George Donald Hobson (1923–2015)

You’ve got the whole gamut of science in an area that’s just so darned interesting. (George Hobson on his affinity to the Arctic, quoted in Foster and Marino, 1986: back cover) This quote encapsulates the man that was George Hobson: bluff, engaged, and captivated by the North. As head of the Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP) in the 1970s and 1980s, George was a virtual gatekeeper of the Arctic for innumerable researchers and visitors, enabling many of them to experience the Arctic for the first time. He left his mark in the Arctic as few others have done. George was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on 8 January 1923, the son of Robert and Agnes Hobson. He attended Delta Collegiate and McMaster University (BSc in Math- ematics and Physics) in Hamilton. He enrolled in the first master’s-level geophysics course at the University of Toronto in 1946 and was awarded an MSc in Petroleum Geophysics in 1948. After graduation, George married Arletta (Arlie) Russell and moved to Edmonton, where he began his geophysics career with Heiland Exploration Canada Ltd. For 10 years George shuttled between seis- mic exploration in the northern Alberta bush and manage- ment positions, eventually becoming chief geophysicist at Merrill Petroleum Ltd. in Calgary. Located in East Antarctica (Fig. 1), the 10- to 20- INSIDE million-year-old freshwater body is covered by a 3.7- to 4.2-km-thick layer of glacial ice. Lake Vostok is big: it has an area (~14,000 km2) near that of Lake Ladoga, a 3 Reckoning Lake Vostok 1 volume (~1,800 km ) near that of Lake Ontario, and a maximum depth (> 500 m) near that of Lake Tahoe. The belt includes three felsic shield volcanoes, the Rainbow, Ilgachuz and Itcha ranges as its most notable features, as well as regionally extensive cone fields, lava flows, dyke swarms and a pluton. Volcanic activity took place periodically from the Late Miocene to the Holocene. -

Beginning with 44 Founding Fellows, the membership has grown to the planned maximum of 250 professional engineers, elected on the basis of their distinguished careers, and of their service and contributions to society, to the country and to the engineering profession. Over its brief 15-year history, the Academy has independently initiated several major studies, drawing on the expertise of its volunteer members. It has issued eight reports dealing with the engineering education, engineering research, the evolution of the engineering profession and other areas of direct importance to the nation. -

We live within the great Coast Range where the Skeena River flowing west to the Pacific crosses the wide north-south Kitsumkalum-Kitimat Valley. This region is underlain by diverse geological materials and is continually shaped by earth processes. Terrace, like other communities, is dependent on the Earth for water, food, materials and energy. Not only does the Earth provide resources, but it accepts our wastes. TJk< Varsity Outdoor Club Journal VOLUME XXII 1979 ISSN 0524-5613 7Ae Wiiveuitj of ThitUh Cotumka Vancouver, Canada PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Paul Hooper March 1980 Having been used to the Canadian Shield wilderness of Ontario and to skiing on a 200 foot mountain of garbage by Toronto International Airport, I was somewhat stunned by B.C.. The first few weeks of my university life were spent with awe as I stumbled around campus observing the benign beauty of the local hills. No longer would I have to drive for three hours to see a good expanse of uninterrupted vegetation or dodge rusty refrigerators while skiing on the garbage hill. I motivated myself to explore these new lands and since then I've seen most parts of the province. The V.O.C. was a motivating force for me ever since the beginning. I was impressed with the organized meetings and started to enjoy the companionship. I soon realized university was more than a place for pushing pencils. The largest push came when I worked for a summer initiating the construction of the Howe Sound Crest Trail under V.O.C. sponsership. The trail crew had more fun than work and a close tie with the V.O.C. resulted. My first minor exploration involved only day hikes with the V.O.C. By the end of the first year, I was tramping around Sphinx Camp with a day pack complete with garbage bag, accessories and a duck hunter sleeping bag. My equipment has changed but the nickname of Colonel Trashbag hasn't. -

It describes (as applicable) fund purpose and scope the history of a fund, donor intent, the purposes for which the fund may and may not be used, the Board’s goals for the fund, administrative operating criteria, and financial operating criteria. A Fund Charter demonstrates the Board’s commitment to prudent management of the Foundation’s resources and compliance with applicable accounting and legal standards. Within the framework of AEG Foundation governance, a Fund Charter is a policy document that may be amended or interpreted by the Board through a simple majority vote. A Fund Charter may refer to other documents that further describe the history, nature, and operations of a fund. Canadian Engineering History: a Thumbnail Sketch
Canadian Engineering History: A Thumbnail Sketch by Andrew H. (Drew) Wilson, FCAE May 2020 Prepared at the request of the President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering Preamble Engineering can be, and has been, defined in a variety of ways. A very early definition was that it is “the art of directing the great source of power in Nature for the use and convenience of people.” Nowadays, it has to be considered as an informed activity performed by purpose-trained practitioners in regard to the design, production and maintenance of machinery, constructions, processes and devices that is being augmented constantly by experience, research, and information that extends beyond science and technology and requires some understanding of economics and business, the law, the social sciences, and politics, as well as an appreciation of the past as well as the future. This paper has been written especially for students of engineering, to introduce them to some of the past events and achievements in engineering activity in Canada. The text is relatively short and makes use of information that has already appeared in other, longer stories of Canadian engineering. For the purposes of this paper, however, some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s engineering achievements prior to 1949 have been included. The illustrations are also few in number, but a bibliography has been appended to encourage further reading. To provide some background to the events and achievements, some economic, social and political information has been included. To help accommodate its ‘thumbnail’ description, this paper omits specific references to Canadian achievements abroad, to engineering in the Armed Forces, and to some of the companies with obvious engineering connections.
