  • Chorkunstakademie – Moskauer Kathedralchor

The atman is a Sanskrit word that means inner self or soul. In Hindu philosophy, it is a primordial principle that separates living beings without totally disuniting them. This concept brings Goyo Montero to the reflection over the idea of individual versus group. It is also a reflection of what a Dance company is, and specially the Ballets de Monte-Carlo as a group of incredibly gifted Soloist that work together as a tide group. The choreographer is pointing out the unique character of each dancer and tells us how they transcend when they connect with each other.

  • Informance 2008
INFORMANCE - MARCH 26, 2008 How can we know the dancer from the dance?” – Martha Graham, Murray Louis, and Bill T. Jones I begin this Informance talk by thanking Linda Roberts and Lori Katterhenry. In early November (the 9th, to be exact), Lori asked me if -- in view of my “obvious enthusiasm and expertise” -- I would be interested in writing study guides for the three guest artist works of the 2007-08 MSU Dance Program: Steps in the Street, by Martha Graham; Four Brubeck Pieces, by Murray Louis; and D-Man in the Waters by Bill T. Jones. “We have never done this before,” Lori said, “and I know it is quite common in theater.” …“Great idea,” Linda Roberts declared the next day, “This information would be very useful for the Informance. I know the students are interested in discussing the movement philosophies and stylistic differences of the three choreographers, and the challenges these elements present in performing and bringing to life the reconstructed dances we are rehearsing.” A few days thereafter, Lori , Linda and I were brainstorming in Lori’s spacious executive office suite and I cautioned them that I was not a dance critic by training; I am an historian and biographer. They were well aware, and that was precisely the reason they asked me to become involved. They were looking for insights about the “historical” side to each work, the social and cultural circumstances that engendered them, the aesthetic contexts against which they were created. I then said that I was not sure I would end up doing actual “study guides,” per se.

Crowded Fire Theater FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Tiffany Cothran (415) 523-0034 [email protected] CROWDED FIRE THEATER’S 2016 SEASON THREE PROVOCATIVE PLAYS BY DIPIKA GUHA, JONAS HASSEN KHEMIRI, AND YOUNG JEAN LEE AT THICK HOUSE IN SAN FRANCISCO MECHANICS OF LOVE by Dipika Guha February 18-March 12 I CALL MY BROTHERS by Jonas Hassen Khemiri March 31-April 24 Translated by Rachel Willson-Broyles THE SHIPMENT by Young Jean Lee September 22-October 15 Thick House 1695 18th St, San Francisco San Francisco - Crowded Fire Theater (CFT) Crowded Fire’s newly appointed Artistic Director Mina Morita unveiled the 2016 mainstage season lineup of three contemporary plays that continue to uphold the company’s long tradition of producing boundary - pushing, thought-provoking theater. At a season-announcement party on Saturday, November 14 th Morita addressed Crowded Fire donors, patrons, and artists saying “At Crowded Fire, we are unafraid of tackling big issues. We commit ourselves to true experimentation of form and content to question, disrupt, or complicate comfortable notions of cultural hierarchy.” Crowded Fire‘s 2016 season begins with the world premiere of Dipika Guha’s play MECHANICS OF LOVE (2/18-3/12), a wild romp about how we love, who we choose, and the cost of making sense of it. Followed in March by a translation by Rachel Willson-Broyles of Swedish playwright Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s I CALL MY BROTHERS (3/31-4/24) an investigation of racial profiling that leads to a funny and fierce showdown with paranoia. The 2016 season concludes in September with Young Jean Lee’s unsettling and incisive comedy THE SHIPMENT (9/22-10/15) that upends African American stereotypes permeating the dominant culture.
