This is not a movement from the complete Boyd orchestration above, nor is it even an arrangement by John Boyd. It seems to be a stand-alone work for marching band, beginning with a snippet of "Baba-Yaga," followed by a non-Pictures theme of Mussorgsky, and concludes with a highly-abbreviated version of the "Great Gate of Kiev." The whole arrangement lasts less than two minutes.

    Chorkunstakademie – Moskauer Kathedralchor

1959 Jazz: a Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959

GELB, GREGG, DMA. 1959 Jazz: A Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 69 pp. Towards the end of the 1950s, about halfway through its nearly 100-year history, jazz evolution and innovation increased at a faster pace than ever before. By 1959, it was evident that two major innovative styles and many sub-styles of the major previous styles had recently emerged. Additionally, all earlier practices were in use, making a total of at least ten actively played styles in 1959. It would no longer be possible to denote a jazz era by saying one style dominated, such as it had during the 1930s’ Swing Era. This convergence of styles is fascinating, but, considering that many of the recordings of that year represent some of the best work of many of the most famous jazz artists of all time, it makes 1959 even more significant. There has been a marked decrease in the jazz industry and in stylistic evolution since 1959, which emphasizes 1959’s importance in jazz history. Many jazz listeners, including myself up until recently, have always thought the modal style, from the famous 1959 Miles Davis recording, Kind of Blue, dominated the late 1950s. However, a few of the other great and stylistically diverse recordings from 1959 were John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz To Come, and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which included the very well- known jazz standard Take Five. My research has found many more 1959 recordings of equally unique artistic achievement.

    Decca Discography

DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

1 The TRUMPET of EMMETT BERRY Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last updated: July 18, 2019 2 Born: Macon, Georgia, July 23, 1915 Died: June 22, 1993 Introduction: Emmett Berry was an excellent swing trumpeter but possibly suffered by being overshadowed by the charismatic Roy Eldridge with a related style. It was quite obvious that he should be a candidate for a solography on internet! Early history: Raised in Cleveland, Ohio; began ‘gigging’ with local bands, then joined J. Frank Terry’s Chicago Nightingales in Toledo, Ohio (1932), left Terry in Albany, New York, in 1933and ‘gigged’ mainly in that area during the following three years. Joined Fletcher Henderson in late 1936, and remained until Fletcher disbanded in June 1939. With Horace Henderson until October 1940, briefly with Earl Hines, then with Teddy Wilson’s sextet from May 1941 until July 1942, then joined Raymond Scott at C.B.S. With Lionel Hampton from spring of 1943, week with Teddy Wilson in August 1943, briefly with Don Redman and Benny Carter, then again rejomed Teddy Wilson c. November 1943. With John Kirby Sextet from summer 1944 until January 1945, Eddie Heywood, February until October 1945, then joined Count Basie. Left Basie in 1950. (ref. John Chilton). Message: I met Emmett Berry’s daughter Christina at the National Jazz Museum of Harlem a few years ago, seeking information about her father. I promised her a solography, it has taken some time, but here it is. Hopefully you are happy with this tribute to your father, Christina! 3 EMMETT BERRY SOLOGRAPHY FLETCHER HENDERSON & HIS ORCHESTRA NYC.

CV Niklas Goldbach Niklas Goldbach, Born 1973 in Witten, Germany, Lives

CV Niklas Goldbach Niklas Goldbach, born 1973 in Witten, Germany, lives and works in Berlin. After studying Sociology at Bielefeld University and “Photography and Video” at the Unversity of Applied Sciences Bielefeld, he was awarded with the “Meisterschüler” degree at the University of the Arts Berlin in 2006. In 2005 he received the Fulbright Grant New York and majored in the MFA program of Hunter College, New York City. In his videos, photographies and installations Goldbach is involved in the relation between architecture and necropolitics in their modernist traditions and postmodern manifestations. Established between reality and fiction, Goldbach’ dissects architectural elements that serve both as backdrops and catalysts of (neo)liberal and (neo)colonial subject construction to create ambiguous perceptions of man-made environments through the lens of a globally expanding interconnectivity of these sites. In his earlier film works, his often duplicated protagonists have colonized epic stages of modern architectural complexes, postmodern urban environments or alleged paradises defying civilisation, all finding their commonality as places oscillating between utopia and dystopia. Niklas Goldbach received several scholarships (among others Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn 2010, Arbeitsstipendium Bildende Kunst des Berliner Senats 2013, Projektförderung des Berliner Senats 2014, Dresdener Stipendium für Fotografie 2016, Villa Aurora Los Angeles 2017, Recherchstipendium des Berliner Senats 2021) and presented his works in numerous solo shows, group exhibitions, and festivals in venues such as the Berlinale, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen , Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Galerie im Taxispalais Innsbruck, Museo Reina Sofia Madrid, Mori-Art Museum Tokyo, Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Cornerhouse Manchester, Barbican Arts Center London, S.M.A.K.

The Secret Gardeners: An Ethnography of Improvised Music in Berlin (2012-13) Tom Arthurs PhD Music The University of Edinburgh 2015 Abstract This thesis addresses the aesthetics, ideologies and practicalities of contemporary European Improvised Music-making - this term referring to the tradition that emerged from 1960s American jazz and free jazz, and that remains, arguably, one of today's most misunderstood and under-represented musical genres. Using a multidisciplinary approach drawing on Grounded Theory, Ethnography and Social Network Analysis, and bounded by Berlin's cosmopolitan local scene of 2012-13, I define Improvised Music as a field of differing-yet-interconnected practices, and show how musicians and listeners conceived of and differentiated between these sub-styles, as well as how they discovered and learned to appreciate such a hidden, ‘difficult’ and idiosyncratic artform.
