Brod Department of Sociology Abstract Augare-Estey, Kodi, M.S., Summer 2011 Forestry and Conservation Whitebark Pine Restoration: Cultural perspectives from Blackfoot Confederacy Members Chairperson: Dr. John Goodburn Whitebark pine (WBP) is a keystone species on the brink of extinction, threatened by fire suppression, white pine blister rust, along with mountain pine beetle infestation and climate change. The Blackfoot Confederacy from the Northern Rockies region, as part of their traditional practices and Worldview, has long gathered the nutrient-rich seeds and cambium of whitebark pine as part of their subsistence. This paper demonstrates how the perspectives, indigenous intelligence and worldview of members of the Blackfoot Confederacy could inform and supplement western science and increase the probability of success in restoration efforts whitebark pine forest ecosystems. With Blackfoot Confederacy acculturation and cultural assimilation, their oral history of traditional practices have faded, and the wealth of traditional practices and indigenous intelligence about their natural world could fade away without it ever being adequately documented. Further efforts are necessary to identify and retrieve indigenous intelligence to provide better ecological understanding of whitebark pine forest ecosystems, to give greater acknowledgement of Indigenous ways of knowing, and to preserve the Blackfoot Confederacy and their cultural identity and integrity. After experiencing a Blackfoot Philosophy course at the Blackfeet Reservation taught by Professor Leroy Little Bear, former Director of the American Indian Program at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus of Native Studies at the University of Lethbridge, I was assigned to write this paper based on what I had learned. The writing assignment was to answer the question “Who am I” as if a “Martian" or some alien from another planet asked “Who are you?”, what would I tell them. This story is offered as a brief introduction to Blackfeet and Blackfoot Confederacy philosophy and worldviews. Given that my thesis project challenged me to bridge Indigenous and Western cultures as I sought to gather Indigenous perspectives from elder members of the Blackfoot Confederacy, it seems an appropriate preface to this paper. Blackfoot philosophy and worldviews are typically conveyed through stories. I 1 offer my sincere appreciation to Professor Leroy Little Bear, for stories and understanding about Blackfoot Philosophy that he has shared, and which contributed significantly to the following.     “STRIKE THEM HARD!” THE BAKER MASSACRE PLAY RAMONA BIG HEAD B.Ed., University of Lethbridge, 1996 A Project Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Lethbridge in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF EDUCATION FACULTY OF EDUCATION LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA March 2009 In memory of Apaisapiaakii (Galina) iii Abstract The oral tradition of story-telling among the Blackfoot is still strong. However, in order to keep the tradition alive for future generations, educators are beginning to step outside the box to allow for innovative ways to bring the stories back to life for students. By writing a play about the 1870 Baker Massacre, and staging it with Blackfoot students from the Kainai Board of Education school system, I have successfully found another way to engage First Nation students from Kindergarten through grade 12. This is the first time the story of the Baker Massacre has been told from the perspective of Blackfoot children. A good portion of the research was taken from oral accounts of actual descendents of the survivors of the massacre. Most of the survivors were young children, including my great-great grandmother, Holy Bear Woman. The Baker Massacre became a forgotten and lost story. However, by performing this play to an audience of approximately 1000 over the course of six performances, including a debut performance in New York City, there is a good chance that this story will not fall into obscurity again. The process of researching, writing and staging this play also had a major impact on my own personal healing and well-being.

    Vocabulary • 1895 Agreement – In 1895, the Blackfeet Indians and representatives of the United States agreed that the United States could purchase land from the tribe. This agreement was ratified (made official) by Congress in 1896, and the land eventually became the eastern half of Glacier National Park. Not all of the Blackfeet signed the agreement, however, and members of the tribe have disputes with the U.S. government concerning certain provisions (conditions) within the Agreement. See “Ceded Strip.” • Agricultural activities - Related to producing crops or livestock and other domestic animal products for sale or use. • Allotment - Something given out in portions. • Alpine Meadow - Type of habitat above tree line with short summers, long winters, and composed mainly of grasses and wildflowers. • Avalanche - A large mass of snow or ice that suddenly falls from a mountain slope. • Bergschrund - A deep crack near the head of a mountain glacier. • Bison (buffalo) - Bison are part of the family Bovidae, to which Asian buffalo, African buffalo and domestic cattle and goats belong. Because American bison resembled in some ways old world buffalo (Asian and African buffalo), early explorers to North America began to call them buffalo. The name buffalo is still used interchangeably with bison. • Blackfeet – The Blackfeet are a group of tribes in the United States and Canada, including the Piegan/Pikuni, Blood/Kainai, Blackfoot, and Siksika. Today these bands or tribes have reserved lands in Montana and Canada, but recently their historical homeland included northern Montana east of the Continental Divide and south-central Alberta. Many Blackfeet tribal members have been part of Glacier Park’s activities since its beginning.

The arrangement of the tipis was not strictly defined in these camps, although all of them faced east. This allowed the morning prayers to travel towards the rising sun, helping it to come above the horizon for another day. Within this territory they had areas where they would travel well over 500 miles during a yearly cycle to hunt, gather and renew religious commitments. Being knowledgeable of their environment and respectful of their gifts from the creator they would carefully select locations or places to travel to in a lifetime.

I focus on the First Nation population of southern Alberta, specifically the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksikaitsitapi). I use a Siksikaitsitapi lens and methodology on their experiences at an IRS, the IRS settlement, the Canadian government’s apology to former students, and the status of reconciliation as a whole.
