RESUMO A presente dissertação é resultado de uma pesquisa de mestrado que objetivou mapear o projeto de si construído por Thomas Jefferson - terceiro presidente dos Estados Unidos da América e redator da Declaração de Independência - em sua narrativa autobiográfica. Jefferson nasceu em 1743 e morreu em 1826, no dia 04 de julho, coincidentemente, aniversário de cinquenta anos de Independência do país que ajudou a fundar. Sua autobiografia foi escrita em 1821, ocasião na qual o político, na idade de 77 anos, dedicou-se a retomar parte de sua vida e trajetória política. Os anos narrados no documento, no entanto, abrangeram um recorte temporal limitado, restringindo-se aos anos 1743 (seu nascimento) e 1790 (ano em que assumiu o cargo de Secretário de Estado do governo de George Washington). A narrativa, deste modo, não abordou alguns grandes acontecimentos de sua vida, como os dois mais altos cargos políticos ocupados por ele: a Vice Presidência e a Presidência do país (1800 – 1809). A análise se propôs a apresentar uma perspectiva geral da fonte, suas características técnicas, estruturais, conteudistas e editoriais, para depois aprofundar em algumas temáticas selecionadas entre os diversos assuntos narrados por ele no texto do documento. Os temas considerados dignos de destaque foram: a escravidão, a religião, a educação e a revolução. O primeiro, a escravidão, foi escolhido por se tratar de uma referência bastante comum à imagem do político, e que acumulou durante quase dois séculos visões completamente divergentes acerca de seus posicionamentos sobre o assunto. Os outros três, religião-educação-revolução, compõe o tripé de feitos escolhidos por ele para serem inscritos em sua lápide e, portanto, foram considerados temas de destaque e essenciais no mapeamento que fizemos de sua narrativa autobiografia. Os quatro temas de destaque, entre outros trabalhados no primeiro capítulo da dissertação, foram pensados no sentido de delinear qual “Jefferson” o autor-personagem intencionou registrar no documento, qual face de si ele buscou delegar à posterioridade. ABSTRACT The present dissertation is a result of a master’s research that aimed to map the “Project of self” built by Thomas Jefferson – third President of United States of America and redactor of the Declaration of Independence – on his autobiographical narrative. Jefferson was born in 1743 and died in 1826, on July 4th, coincidentally, the fiftieth independence anniversary of a country he helped to build. His autobiography was written in 1821, occasion in which the politician, at age of 77 years-old, dedicated to recapture part of his life and political trajectory.     This is a great moment – for the Class of 1968, for West Point, and for future generations of cadets. Jefferson Hall Library and Learning Center has transformed the look and feel of our academic area. Since the very first day it opened about three weeks ago —it has been teeming with cadets and faculty, creating an incredible positive energy that’s exciting to witness and be a part of. This moment —in particular— is a great moment, because it ties together a part of our academy history that isn’t well known. The statue we are about to unveil will mark Thomas Jefferson in the memory of every person who enters this Class of 1968 rotunda, and it will indelibly tie Thomas Jefferson to West Point. We call COL Thayer the Father of the Military Academy---- but it was President Jefferson who was the Founder. Jefferson was initially skeptical (some even say opposed) to the idea of a Military Academy. His boss, President George Washington, was in favor. Jefferson’s experience was with the professional armies of Europe, and he feared that a military academy would equal an elite Army—where power was given rather than earned. As a man of a unique vision, he knew that a fledgling nation needed to be embraced by its citizens, and he was cautious that a ruling elite might be swayed to preserve their own status thru military power. I suspect that a man who believed that every man has a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness could not support elitism or institutions founded on that principle in good conscience either.

An Analysis of Techniques Used to Manage Historic Open Spaces on Two Suburban American University Campuses Abstract As more and more Americans are attending higher educational institutions, the built environment of these places is becoming relevant to a larger number of people. To many graduates familiar with a university, its ensemble of buildings and spaces have the ability to stir up a sense of personal meaning associated with a past era in their life. It is important to preserve these campuses, by maintaining resources that already exist and protecting them from inappropriate change that would diminish their integrity. The physical environment of a university is often an icon of the school. The school's community as well as the public associates the architecture and landscape of a school as part of its identity.
