With an offseason of working together, Shehan believes that the coach/play- er familiarity will pay dividends. “The players are used to adversity,” said Shehan. “This is the most continuity they’ve had for a while. Some of them have had multiple head coaches. They know what to expect when they throw a bullpen session and they know what to expect when they go to practice. Hopefully, we will reap the benefits from that this year.” Along with the coaching staff, Shehan’s veteran, adversity-tested group of players remained hungrier than ever thanks to last year’s success and a bit of preseason bulletin board material. “The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason Rankings were released in December, and our players noticed that we weren’t ranked in the top 40 and didn’t receive any votes,” said Shehan. “Even though we finished 2008 among the top four in the league, there were seven PSAC teams ahead of us in this poll. Our guys definitely fed off that.” But as this team fully knows, the preseason rankings matter little. Last year, it was picked to finish dead last in the East but ended up in first. Seven of the position starters and five of its top pitchers from that club are back for 2009. Success breeds confidence and after last season’s torrid finish, Millersville has plenty of it. There is clearly no indication that the team is satis- fied either. “There are some question marks about this season with the new teams add- ed to the conference (Mercyhurst and Gannon) and four teams from each division now qualifying for the playoffs,” said Shehan. “But we feel like we can be competitive. Our No. 1 goal is always to win the PSAC East and reach the conference playoffs, but the players have set a goal to go to the regional, which is something that hasn’t been done here since 2000. “We have high expectations, no question,” continued Shehan. “But that is something we want year in and year out for this program.” One of the reasons for Millersville’s excitement is that its top five hitters are all back including 2008 PSAC East Rookie of the Year Derek Kline, who burst

The good news, however, is that Shehan has plenty of arms to chose from, and he already knows that he has a proven No. 1 starter in junior Ryan Stauffer. Stauffer has improved each season at Millersville, and last year he went 6-4 with two complete games and a 4.33 ERA. He was outstanding against the PSAC East, though, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.16 ERA. Options for the other starting spots include junior Forrest Mengle, sopho- mores Zach Eckley and Mike McMonagle, and freshmen Michael Mesveskas and Kyle Belanchik.

Mengle, a lefty, was 1-5 last year, but improved greatly during conference play. He posted a 3.00 ERA in five starts and averaged nearly five innings per start.

Eckley made 14 appearances and nine starts include three against the PSAC East a year ago, and McMonagle made 14 relief appearances and one start. Mesveskas is a 6-4 righty from Moorestown, N.J. There, he was an All-Liber- ty Division selection at pitcher.
