  • The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar
Hidden Heroines: The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar Introduction The first comic books came out in the 1930s. Superhero comics quickly became one of the most popular genres. Today, they remain incredibly popular and influential. I have been interested in superhero comics for several years now, but one thing I often noticed was that women generally had much smaller roles than men and were also usually not as powerful. Female characters got significantly less time in the story devoted to them than men, and most superhero teams only had one woman, if they had any at all. Because there were so few female characters it was harder for me to find a way to relate to these stories and characters. If I wanted to read a comic that centered around a female hero I had to spend a lot more time looking for it than if I wanted to read about a male hero. Another thing that I noticed was that when people talk about the history of superhero comics, and the most important and influential superheroes, they almost only talk about male heroes. Wonder Woman was the only exception to this. This made me curious about other influential women in comics and their stories. Whenever I read about the history of comics I got plenty of information on how the portrayal of superheroes changed over time, but it always focused on male heroes, so I was interested in learning how women were portrayed in comics and how that has changed.

MARQUETTE LAW REVIEW Volume 98 Summer 2015 Number 4 NOT YOUR MOTHER’S WILL: GENDER, LANGUAGE, AND WILLS KAREN J. SNEDDON* “Boys will be boys, but girls must be young ladies” is an echoing patriarchal refrain from the past. Formal equality has not produced equality in all areas, as demonstrated by the continuing wage gap. Gender bias lingers and can be identified in language. This Article focuses on Wills, one of the oldest forms of legal documents, to explore the intersection of gender and language. With conceptual antecedents in pre-history, written Wills found in Ancient Egyptian tombs embody the core characteristics of modern Wills. The past endows the drafting and implementation of Wills with a wealth of traditions and experiences. The past, however, also entombs patriarchal notions inappropriate in Wills of today. This Article explores the language of the Will to parse the historical choices that remain relevant choices for today and the vestiges of a patriarchal past that should be avoided.

  • Doctor Daster's Diabolical De-Enenegizing Device by Dreamtales
1 Doctor Daster's Diabolical De-enenegizing Device by Dreamtales Humming as she sauntered around her high rise apartment, checking her last minute preparations, Kathy found it hard to suppress a smile. Her new boyfriend Dan would be home any minute now, and she was crackling with the anticipation of another romantic evening of intimate dining followed by intense love making. Not too shabby, she thought happily as she checked herself in the hallway mirror, regarding her beautiful smiling face framed by her long dark brown hair, her short form fitting black dress perfectly highlighting her perky breasts, cute sexy rear and long lovely legs. She was especially looking forward to tonight. He had mentioned some new "surprise," and Kathy was hoping Dan's fertile genius had perhaps devised some kinky new angle to spice up their lovemaking. Kathy had joined Dan Daster a few weeks ago as a research assistant, and it was surprising how quickly she had fallen for him. Kathy had always been something of a rebel, and the thought of tying up with such a controversial figure had appealed to her from the start. At first she was wary of getting too friendly with "the infamous Dr. Daster," but the more she came to know Dan, the more she felt that he was really the innocent victim of a smear campaign. How could some one so nice and loving - and so good in bed! - be the arch villain that people made him out to be? Sure, she'd seen all the newspaper articles detailing the bank robberies, kidnappings and other nastiness since he came to town.

  • Galatea's Daughters: Dolls, Female Identity and the Material Imagination
Galatea‘s Daughters: Dolls, Female Identity and the Material Imagination in Victorian Literature and Culture Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Maria Eugenia Gonzalez-Posse, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: David G. Riede, Advisor Jill Galvan Clare A. Simmons Copyright by Maria Eugenia Gonzalez-Posse 2012 Abstract The doll, as we conceive of it today, is the product of a Victorian cultural phenomenon. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a dedicated doll industry was developed and that dolls began to find their way into children‘s literature, the rhetoric of femininity, periodical publications and canonical texts. Surprisingly, the Victorian fascination with the doll has largely gone unexamined and critics and readers have tended to dismiss dolls as mere agents of female acculturation. Guided by the recent material turn in Victorian studies and drawing extensively from texts only recently made available through digitization projects and periodical databases, my dissertation seeks to provide a richer account of the way this most fraught and symbolic of objects figured in the lives and imaginations of the Victorians. By studying the treatment of dolls in canonical literature alongside hitherto neglected texts and genres and framing these readings in their larger cultural contexts, the doll emerges not as a symbol of female passivity but as an object celebrated for its remarkable imaginative potential. The doll, I argue, is therefore best understood as a descendant of Galatea – as a woman turned object, but also as an object that Victorians constantly and variously brought to life through the imagination.

  • The Tangent : an Annual 1933
JSM OMTARiO COilKGt OF ARr> (Im^i ) J Clair Stewart THE TANGENT AN ANNUAL APRIL, 1933 PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS' CLUB, ONTARIO COLLEGE OF ART, TORONTO Editors, Sylvia Hahn, Sophie Livesay Business Managers, Roy Austin, Cleeve HoRxNe UNEASY lies the head that wears the proverbial green eyeshade of an editor, particularly a Tangent editor! The first thing that the word suggested was someone in a tilted chair, with a pipe and a blue pencil, going through proofs in a leisurely manner. This is the impression given by most pictures of editors. It is quite wrong. By the time several weeks had j)assed, this was obvious. Being an editor means detecting the spark of genius behind the blush of diffidence and coaxing it and wheedling it and bullying it and threatening it into the light of day. In spite of this apparent reluctance on the part of the school to contribute, as the closing date drew near, more work came in, until on the last day wc were literally snowed in with sheets of ])a|)er flung at us by eager contributors, wliile on the day after the last day we had more than on all the other days i)Ut together! (How lucky that we counted on this!) Last year's idea of illustrating the magazine entirely with linoleum cuts seems to have found great favour, for this year we have even more of them. We wish to extend our thanks to all those who, by their inteivst and hell), have assisted i?i the production of \\\v magazine.
