Foxie Meets New Friends Meet Foxie- a 40-year-old chimpanzee that has been through a lot of trauma during her life. Then one day there was a dramatic change. Ha, I will always remember that day. Three weeks ago I had just given birth to my first set of twins, then some people took them away to do medical testing for a human disease. I lived in the bottom of that lab in a basement locked up with no sunlight, toys or other chimps around me. But then came a day that changed my life. A lady and a few men in armor rescued me and brought me to a beautiful place in Washington; it was what humans call a sanctuary, but to me, it was more like a dream. There were other chimps, toys, and beautiful sunlight. At first, I was scared and angry, so I refused to play with any of the toys until one of my care keepers, Diana, got me something special. Humans often call this a Troll doll from the movie Trolls. My first one was pink (my favorite color), and her name was Poppy. She was like my baby; I would put her on my back and walk around. This troll brightened my mood a bit and helped me forget my past. Then the next day Diana gave me a whole collection of them which made me very happy. Once all the trolls were in my pen, I played dress up with them. I put different clothing on each of them (it’s easy for me with my hands and feet to hold on to all the clothing). -

A Pawn’s Toil: Advocating for a Return to the Toybox A Thesis presented to The Honors Tutorial College Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation From the Honors Tutorial College With the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art (Painting and Drawing) By Elizabeth Boch August 2018 Boch 2 Abstract This paper serves as a contextual and conceptual aid to the three, oil on canvas still life’s that make up my senior thesis exhibition, A Pawn’s Toil. The first section of this document addresses the paintings directly as political artworks. It spells out each’s narrative, identifies their references to other artworks and inspirations, and discusses their intent. Next is a discussion and cultural analysis of the toy objects used as subjects in the paintings. These toys serve metaphorically as representatives of various economic and social backgrounds in the artwork. This paper suggests that they give rise to the candid, childlike senses of curiosity and investigation which have the potential to inspire subversive political action. Afterwards is a brief analysis of the still life genre’s rich, historical lineage, and discussion of how this contemporary artwork operates within it. Attached as an appendix is an evaluation of the current political and economic climate in the United States of America, and declaration of my position on the topic. Hidden Heroines: The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar Introduction The first comic books came out in the 1930s. Superhero comics quickly became one of the most popular genres. Today, they remain incredibly popular and influential. I have been interested in superhero comics for several years now, but one thing I often noticed was that women generally had much smaller roles than men and were also usually not as powerful. Female characters got significantly less time in the story devoted to them than men, and most superhero teams only had one woman, if they had any at all. Because there were so few female characters it was harder for me to find a way to relate to these stories and characters. If I wanted to read a comic that centered around a female hero I had to spend a lot more time looking for it than if I wanted to read about a male hero. Another thing that I noticed was that when people talk about the history of superhero comics, and the most important and influential superheroes, they almost only talk about male heroes. Wonder Woman was the only exception to this. This made me curious about other influential women in comics and their stories. Whenever I read about the history of comics I got plenty of information on how the portrayal of superheroes changed over time, but it always focused on male heroes, so I was interested in learning how women were portrayed in comics and how that has changed. -

SNEDDON* “Boys will be boys, but girls must be young ladies” is an echoing patriarchal refrain from the past. Formal equality has not produced equality in all areas, as demonstrated by the continuing wage gap. Gender bias lingers and can be identified in language. This Article focuses on Wills, one of the oldest forms of legal documents, to explore the intersection of gender and language. With conceptual antecedents in pre-history, written Wills found in Ancient Egyptian tombs embody the core characteristics of modern Wills. The past endows the drafting and implementation of Wills with a wealth of traditions and experiences. The past, however, also entombs patriarchal notions inappropriate in Wills of today. This Article explores the language of the Will to parse the historical choices that remain relevant choices for today and the vestiges of a patriarchal past that should be avoided. -
