WILLIAMSBURG UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS A WELCOMING, WORSHIPING, WITNESSING CONGREGATION WUU NEWS March 2014 March 2, 2014 9:15 am The Circle: Contemplative Worship “I Want to be Loving” Eva Burke, Worship Leader We all want to be loved, but above all, our most heartfelt wish is to love, deeply and universally. Realisti- cally, though, there are times when this seems like an unreachable ideal. What then? How can we express ourselves, genuinely and skillfully, when showing overt love doesn't work? 11:15 am "The Problem With Being Right" All-Ages Worship Service Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt It isn't easy when opinions we hold dear are challenged. It is even less easy when such challenge reveals we have been wrong. This Sunday we will explore the need to be right, how it can be a barrier to growth and justice, and what it might feel like to let that need go. 11:00 am, OWL for registered class participants (Parker House) March 9, 2014 **Reminder: Daylight Savings Time Begins at 2:00 am today, Don’t forget to “Spring Forward” an hour this morning or you will miss services** 9:15 am The Circle: Contemplative Worship “Loving the Unlovable” Rev. Jennifer Ryu 11:15 am "Loving the Unlovable" Rev. Jennifer Ryu We begin our month-long relection on love by considering those who are the hardest to love. Rev. Jen- nifer is seeking one or two people to share your stories in a 3-minute "From the Heart" about loving when loving is hard. Natalie Miller Moore has offered to help coach those who would like some extra help. -

The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar
Hidden Heroines: The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar Introduction The first comic books came out in the 1930s. Superhero comics quickly became one of the most popular genres. Today, they remain incredibly popular and influential. I have been interested in superhero comics for several years now, but one thing I often noticed was that women generally had much smaller roles than men and were also usually not as powerful. Female characters got significantly less time in the story devoted to them than men, and most superhero teams only had one woman, if they had any at all. Because there were so few female characters it was harder for me to find a way to relate to these stories and characters. If I wanted to read a comic that centered around a female hero I had to spend a lot more time looking for it than if I wanted to read about a male hero. Another thing that I noticed was that when people talk about the history of superhero comics, and the most important and influential superheroes, they almost only talk about male heroes. Wonder Woman was the only exception to this. This made me curious about other influential women in comics and their stories. Whenever I read about the history of comics I got plenty of information on how the portrayal of superheroes changed over time, but it always focused on male heroes, so I was interested in learning how women were portrayed in comics and how that has changed. -

MARQUETTE LAW REVIEW Volume 98 Summer 2015 Number 4 NOT YOUR MOTHER’S WILL: GENDER, LANGUAGE, AND WILLS KAREN J. SNEDDON* “Boys will be boys, but girls must be young ladies” is an echoing patriarchal refrain from the past. Formal equality has not produced equality in all areas, as demonstrated by the continuing wage gap. Gender bias lingers and can be identified in language. This Article focuses on Wills, one of the oldest forms of legal documents, to explore the intersection of gender and language. With conceptual antecedents in pre-history, written Wills found in Ancient Egyptian tombs embody the core characteristics of modern Wills. The past endows the drafting and implementation of Wills with a wealth of traditions and experiences. The past, however, also entombs patriarchal notions inappropriate in Wills of today. This Article explores the language of the Will to parse the historical choices that remain relevant choices for today and the vestiges of a patriarchal past that should be avoided. -

Interpreting the Tongass National Forest
INTERPRETING THE TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST via the ALASKA MARINE HIGHWAY U. S. Department of Agriculture Alaska Region Forest Service INTERPRETING THE TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST By D. R. (Bob) Hakala Visitor Information Service Illustrations by Ann Pritchard Surveys and Maps U.S.D.A. Forest Service Juneau, Alaska TO OUR VISITORS The messages in this booklet have been heard by thousands of travelers to Southeast Alaska. They were prepared originally as tape recordings to be broadcast by means of message repeater systems on board the Alaska State ferries and commercial cruise vessels plying the Alaska waters of the Inside Passage. Public interest caused us to publish them in this form so they would be available to anyone on ships traveling through the Tongass country. The U.S.D.A. Forest Service, in cooperation with the State of Alaska, has developed the interpretive program for the Alaska Marine Highway (Inside Passage) because, as one of the messages says, "... most of the landward view is National Forest. The Forest Service and the State of Alaska share the objective of providing factual, meaning ful information which adds understanding and pride in Alaska and the National Forests within its boundaries." We hope these pages will enrich your recall of Alaska scenes and adventures. Charles Yates Regional Forester 1 CONTENTS 1. THE PASSAGE AHEAD 3 2. WELCOME-. 4 1. THE PASSAGE AHEAD 3.
