This document also serves to communicate the basic information on the fishery and its management to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) staff, legislated co-management boards and other stakeholders. This IFMP provides a common understanding of the basic “rules” for the sustainable management of the fisheries resource. This IFMP is not a legally binding instrument which can form the basis of a legal challenge. The IFMP can be modified at any time and does not fetter the Minister's discretionary powers set out in the Fisheries Act, Species At Risk Act, and Oceans Act. ABSTRACT Squamatological (fish scale) material from 48 common species found in coastal waters of British Columbia is presented. Fish-scale remains of extant species are well- preserved in Holocene core sediments in various anoxic basins along the coast of Brit- ish Columbia. These remains are of considerable value in assessing natural variation in fish populations over time. Comparative micrographs of modern fish scales as well as an assessment of their preservation potential is provided. Photographs of various scales preserved in the sedimentary record (e.g., herring, rockfish, sardines, surfperch) are provided and discussed in the context of the taphonomic alteration that typically occurs after burial. -

Hanner b a School of Biology and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, University of Mpumalanga, Corner of R40 and D725 Roads, Nelspruit 1200, South Africa b Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: Despite the expressed interest of Canadians in sustainable and comprehensively labelled seafood, the country’s CFIA seafood labelling requirements remain scant and naming conventions in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency DNA Barcoding (CFIA) ‘fishlist ’ allow the grouping of multiple species under single ‘umbrella’ terms. Here, we test the extent to Flatfishes which CFIA listings reflect current market availability and conceal biodiversity, using the flatfishes as a model. Pleuronectiformes Accordingly, we compared CFIA-listed flatfishspecies with those documented in Canadian import records, those Traceability Trade in production records of Canada and its flatfishsuppliers, as well as those identifiedin DNA-based market surveys conducted across Canada. Of the 43 flatfish species on the CFIA list, only three have consistently shown up in Canadian imports, production records and market surveys, whereas almost a third (n = 15) failed to appear in any of the latter over at least a decade. Species have been detected on the market that are absent from this list, while overfishedand/or threatened taxa have been found concealed under vague generic terms. -
