He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things - and the things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 It is in people’s nature to look up to the big, rich, powerful people and organizations in our world, but over the years we’ve become convinced that God is mostly using small, anonymous, simple-hearted Christians to do His will and work. It seems the Lord de- lights to take people from insignificant backgrounds and use them to shake the world! When God uses someone who would never have been able to do anything worthwhile if it wasn’t for His power, God gets the glory. When someone does a work that they were more than capable of achieving in their own strength, then that person gets the credit. The American Bishop Phillip Brooks once said, “Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle.” Over the next few issues we plan to focus on a remarkable miracle from China - Henan Province. Henan is a landlocked province with almost 100 million people. It’s one of the poorest parts of China, with a high rate of illiteracy. In many ways people from the more sophisticated parts of China look down on people from Henan as poor, uncouth farmers. In the past, many exasperated missionaries complained how stubborn the people of Henan were, and lamented they would never be saved. Praise God that what seems impossible with man is possible with God! True to His Word, He has chosen the people of Henan to be leaders of the Church in China, and firsthand witnesses of His mighty power. One of the most powerful, sustained revivals in Church history has taken place over the past 25 years in Henan, so that today the prov- ince is known as the ‘Galilee of China’ - the place where Jesus’ disciples come from. Regardless of where we travel in China we usually find the majority of the key house church leaders are from Henan. They have been used by the Lord to lead tens of millions of people to Jesus. Many of the Chinese Christians we help support as evangelists and missionaries are from Henan. Many of the Bibles and books the Lord has allowed us to print in China end up in the hands of believers in Henan. Most Christians around the world are aware God has done something truly awesome in China today, but few know exactly how He has done it. In these next few newsletters we hope to share just a few of the many testimonies we’ve heard from Chinese Christians. Because we don’t want to get any of the believers in China into trouble, some of the people’s names and specific places have been changed or omitted, but the stories them- selves are true. In this Part One on Henan Province we examine the foundations of the Church in Henan, how the Gospel was first brought to this blessed part of China. Asia Harvest 3 March 2002 1884 when the China Inland Mission se- cured premises in the town of Zhoujiakou, Henan - an important central trading center con- nected to a tributary of the Yangtze River. The Heart of Progress was slow in the early years of work in Henan, but the missionaries faithfully and carefully persevered, laying China’s Revival a solid foundation for what was to follow. If only by faith they’d been able to see what Henan, which means “South of the River” is a tremendous work God would bring about home to almost 100 million souls, crammed into on the soil they labored for so long with an area less than half the size of Germany, or ap- little apparent success! proximately the same size as the U.S. State of Many missionaries were mocked and Oklahoma. harassed during the early years, while The Yellow River cuts across the north of several spilled their blood and died on Henan, bringing both life and suffering to mil- Henan soil during the Boxer Rebellion of lions of people. Monsen worked in China from 1901 “Monsen preached that it was not enough to 1932. for Christians to study the lives of people who are born-again, but they themselves must be radically born-again in order to enter the Kingdom of heaven. With such teaching, she took the emphasis off head knowledge and showed each person they were personally responsible before God for their own inner spiritual life.” Marie Monsen’s life-style matched her words. She was fearless, traveling thousands of miles through bandit-infested territory to share the Gospel, and showed great faith, love and courage wherever she went. Although she personally never planted a church in China, God used her to bring revival and the churches grew rapidly. Today Marie Monsen is fondly remembered as ‘The Mother of the House Churches’ by believers in Henan Province. Indeed, it can be said that many of the attributes she possessed, including faithful endurance in the face of intense suffering, are traits of the Church in Henan Province Marie Monsen with Mrs. Hsi, wife of a today. famous Chinese pastor, 1929 Asia Harvest 5 March 2002 The Lord also used this small Lutheran lady With a heavy heart Brother Yun sternly told to perform many miracles of divine healing and the Norwegian Christians, “You must honor signs and wonders. this woman of God! Summary In April 1992, China's National People's Congress (npc) formally approved the "Resolution on the Construction of the Yangtze River Three Gorges Project," marking the conclusion of decades of controversy within the Chinese leadership in favor of supporters of the world's biggest-ever river dam project. Despite strenuous government attempts to muzzle the debate, almost one-third of the normally compliant npc delegates, in an unprecedented display of legislative dissent, either abstained or cast opposition votes. The following year, a pilot project for the resettlement of an estimated 1.1 to 1.6 million inhabitants of the proposed 600-kilometer-long reservoir area drew to a close and, in early 1994, the full resettlement program began in earnest. By mid-year, excavation and preparation of the dam's foundations were underway at Sandouping, the chosen dam site just downstream of the world-famous Three Gorges scenic area; in December, Premier Li Peng formally declared the project open. The Chinese government has offered overseas manufacturers US$3 billion worth of machinery and equipment contracts and will reportedly seek an additional US$5 billion or so in overseas funding for the project. International tendering has already begun for a preliminary range of dam-related construction contracts.

  • The Occurrence of Cereal Cultivation in China
The Occurrence of Cereal Cultivation in China TRACEY L-D LU NEARL Y EIGHTY YEARS HAVE ELAPSED since Swedish scholar J. G. Andersson discovered a piece of rice husk on a Yangshao potsherd found in the middle Yel low River Valley in 1927 (Andersson 1929). Today, many scholars agree that China 1 is one of the centers for an indigenous origin of agriculture, with broom corn and foxtail millets and rice being the major domesticated crops (e.g., Craw-· ford 2005; Diamond and Bellwood 2003; Higham 1995; Smith 1995) and dog and pig as the primary animal domesticates (Yuan 2001). It is not clear whether chicken and water buffalo were also indigenously domesticated in China (Liu 2004; Yuan 2001). The origin of agriculture in China by no later than 9000 years ago is an impor tant issue in prehistoric archaeology. Agriculture is the foundation of Chinese civ ilization. Further, the expansion of agriculture in Asia might have related to the origin and dispersal of the Austronesian and Austroasiatic speakers (e.g., Bellwood 2005; Diamond and Bellwood 2003; Glover and Higham 1995; Tsang 2005). Thus the issue is essential for our understanding of Asian and Pacific prehistory and the origins of agriculture in the world. Many scholars have discussed various aspects regarding the origin of agriculture in China, particularly after the 1960s (e.g., Bellwood 1996, 2005; Bellwood and Renfrew 2003; Chen 1991; Chinese Academy of Agronomy 1986; Crawford 1992, 2005; Crawford and Shen 1998; Flannery 1973; Higham 1995; Higham and Lu 1998; Ho 1969; Li and Lu 1981; Lu 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002; MacN eish et al.

  • Bioarcheology of China
Chapter 3 Bioarchaeology of China: Bridging Biological and Archaeological Inquiries Elizabeth Berger and Kate Pechenkina In China, anthropology (人类学 renleixue, literally “study of humanity”) is primar- ily used to refer to physical anthropology. Biological or physical anthropology is firmly situated within the biological disciplines, whereas archaeology is tradition- ally hosted by history departments. Consequent differences in research interests and approaches between archaeologists and biological anthropologists have influenced the development of the field. Research on archaeological human skeletons, and anthropology as a whole, in China can be divided into three historical phases: (1) the late 1800s to 1949, the formative period, when anthropology in China was practiced as a holistic discipline and biological anthropology research was dominated by comparative morphomet- rics, population history, and paleoanthropology; (2) 1949 to the early 1980s, when “anthropology” referred almost exclusively to physical anthropology, and morpho- metrics and paleoanthropology were independent of archaeology; and (3) the 1980s until today, when cultural anthropology has experienced a renewal and bioarchaeol- ogy has come to integrate the skeletal and archaeological records (Zhang 2012; Zhu 2004; Hu 2006; Guldin 1994). In its early years (before 1949), Chinese anthropology was in close communica- tion with American, British, and European scholarship. However, it also draws from a long tradition of Chinese historiography, antiquarianism, and medical stud- ies and has undergone more than 100 years of development within China to become a discipline with its own research foci and disciplinary boundaries (Guldin 1994; Hu 2006).
