Olga Ladyzhenskaya and Olga Ole˘Inik: Two Great Women Mathematicians of the 20Th Century
OLGA LADYZHENSKAYA AND OLGA OLE˘INIK: TWO GREAT WOMEN MATHEMATICIANS OF THE 20TH CENTURY SUSAN FRIEDLANDER∗ AND BARBARA LEE KEYFITZ This short article celebrates the contributions of women to partial differ- ential equations and their applications. Although many women have made important contributions to this field, we have seen the recent deaths of two of the brightest stars–Olga Ladyzhenskaya and Olga Ole˘ınik–and in their memory, we focus on their work and their lives. The two Olgas had much in common and were also very different. Both were born in the 1920s in the Soviet Union, grew up during very difficult years, and survived the awful death and destruction of the World War II. Shortly after the war, they were students together at Moscow State Uni- versity where they were both advised by I. G. Petrovsky, whose influence on Moscow mathematics at the time was unsurpassed. Both were much in- fluenced by the famous seminar of I. M. Gelfand, and both young women received challenging problems in PDE from Gelfand. In 1947, both Olgas graduated from Moscow State University, and then their paths diverged. Olga Ole˘ınik remained in Moscow and continued to be supervised by Petro- vsky. Her whole career was based in Moscow; after receiving her Ph.D. in 1954, she became first a professor and ultimately the head of the Depart- ment of Differential Equations at Moscow State University. Olga Ladyzhen- skaya moved in 1947 to Leningrad, and her career developed at the Steklov Institute there. Like Ole˘ınik, her mathematical achievements were very in- fluential; as a result of her work, Ladyzhenskaya overcame discrimination to become the uncontested leader of the Leningrad school of PDE. -

Today we don’t need to look very far to see that our own generation is living through such a time, and this is true whether we are living in Europe or in Iraq, in Sudan or the Middle East, in Egypt or in the United States. As far as the West is concerned, we have only to think back to the horrific bombings that took place in the station at Madrid some time ago or to recall the shock and horror of 9/11. But there have been other horrors, other scenes of humiliation and terror, which we have witnessed on our television screens, and most notable of all, of course, the effects of the tsunami. Although these events may have taken place thousands of miles away, they too have seared our imagination. My question, then, is this: In such a time of afflic- tion, of what possible use to us is poetry? Can it be said to help or console us in any way? After 9/11, there was, as it happens, one remarkable, instinctive response of the people in New York,a response manifest not only in and around Ground Zero, but also in many of the streets of the city. For, on the walls of the city, in the subway, on the sidewalks, there logos 8:3 summer 2005 01-logos-murray-pp19-39 6/14/05 8:25 AM Page 20 logos began to appear lines from famous poems and even entire original poems, written up and pinned to photographs of some of the men and women who had died in the catastrophe. -

Akhmatova's work ranges from short lyric poems to intricately structured cycles, such as Requiem (1935–40), her tragic masterpiece about the Stalinist terror. Her style, characterised by its economy and emotional restraint, was strikingly original and distinctive to her contemporaries. The strong and clear leading female voice struck a new chord in Russian poetry. Her writing can be said to fall into two periods - the early work (1912–25) and her later work (from around 1936 until her death), divided by a decade of reduced literary output. Her work was condemned and censored by Stalinist authorities and she is notable for choosing not to emigrate, and remaining in Russia, acting as witness to the atrocities around her. Her perennial themes include meditations on time and memory, and the difficulties of living and writing in the shadow of Stalinism. Primary sources of information about Akhmatova's life are relatively scant, as war, revolution and the totalitarian regime caused much of the written record to be destroyed. For long periods she was in official disfavour and many of those who were close to her died in the aftermath of the revolution. <b>Early life and family</b> Akhmatova was born at Bolshoy Fontan, near the Black Sea port of Odessa. -

MANDELSHTAM, OSIP EMILYEVICH b. Jan. 3 [Jan. 15, New Style], 1891, Warsaw, Pol., Russian Empire [now in Poland] d. Dec. 27, 1938, Vtoraya Rechka, near Vladivostok, Russia, U.S.S.R. [now in Russia] andelshtam also spelled MANDELSTAM, major Russian poet, prose writer, and literary Messayist. Most of his works went unpub- lished in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era (1929- 53) and were almost unknown to generations of Rus- sian readers until the mid-1960s. Mandelshtam grew up in St. Petersburg in a middle class Jewish household; his father was a well-off leather merchant, who abandoned rabbinical training for a secular education in Germany; his mother was a cultivated member of the Russian Jewish intelligentsia.. After graduating from the private elite Tenishev School in 1907 and an unsuccessful atempt to join a socialt-revolutionary terrorist organization, Mandel- stam travelled to France to study at the Sorbonne and later to Germany to enroll at the University of Heidel- berg. After returning to Russia in 1911, he converted to Christianity (baptized by the Finnish Methodists) and, thus exempted from the Jewish quota, went on to study at the University of St. Petersburg, He left it in 1915 before receiving a degree.. His first poems appeared in the St. Petersburg journal O. Mandelstam in Voronezh exile, 1936 Apollon ("Apollo") in 1910. In response to the early Futurist manifestoes, Mandelshtam, together with Nikolay Gumilyov, Anna Akhmatova, and Sergey Gorodetsky founded the Acmeist school of poetry, an attempt at codifying the poetic practice of the new generation of Petersburg poets. They rejected the vague mysticism of Russian Symbolism and demanded clarity and concreteness of representation, precision of form and meaning -- combined with a broad-ranging erudition (classical antiquity, European history, especially, cultural and includ- ing art and religion). -

Her work is considered among some of the greatest in twentieth century Russian literature.[1] She lived through and wrote of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Moscow famine that followed it. In an attempt to save her daughter Irina from starvation, she placed her in a state orphanage in 1919, where she died of hunger. As an anti-Bolshevik supporter of Imperialism, Tsvetaeva was exiled in 1922, living with her family in increasing poverty in Paris, Berlin and Prague before returning to Moscow in 1939. Shunned and suspect, Tsvetaeva's isolation was compounded. Both her husband Sergey Efron and her daughter Ariadna Efron (Alya) were arrested for espionage in 1941; Alya served over eight years in prison and her husband was executed. Without means of support and in deep isolation, Tsvetaeva committed suicide in 1941. As a lyrical poet, her passion and daring linguistic experimentation mark her striking chronicler of her times and the depths of the human condition. Various commentators argue that this ideological shift applies to external as well as internal politics, with Russia becoming an international conservative power. This article seeks to determine what being an “international conservative power” actually means for Russia, by means of an examination of four different variations of Russian conservatism—Orthodox/Slavophile conservatism, civilizational conservatism, isolationist conservatism, and state/official conservatism. It argues that these are not all fully compatible with each other. If Russia truly is emerging as a conservative international power, this could lead both Russia and the world in one of several different directions, depending on which version of conservatism comes to dominate. 0 General aim: To give institutions a report as unbiased, independent and reliable as possible, in order to raise the quality of the debate and thus the relative political decisions. Specific aims: To circulate this report to mass media and in public fora of various nature (i.e. human rights summits) as well as at the institutional level, with the purpose of enriching the reader’s knowledge and understanding of this region, given its huge implications in the world peace process. As is well known, for some years now highly politicised anti-Chinese propaganda campaigns have targeted the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, often spreading groundless, non-verifiable or outright false information, triggering on these bases a sanctions war and causing serious damage to international relations. There is a dramatic lack of unbiased and alternative documentation on the topic, especially by researchers who have lived and studied in China and Xinjiang. This report aims to fill this gap, by deepening and contextualising the region and its real political, economic and social dynamics, and offering an authoritative and documented point of view vis-à- vis the reports that Western politicians currently have at their disposal. The ultimate goal of this documentation is to promote an informed public debate on the topic and offer policymakers and civil society a different point of view from the biased and specious accusations coming from the Five Eyes countries, the EU and some NGOs and think-tanks. Recently some Swedish researchers have done a great job of deconstructing the main Western allegations about the situation in the autonomous region of Xinjiang. -

The interviewer, the late Vsevolod Georgievich Shishkovsky, was London correspondent of Russian State TV and Radio. VSEVOLOD SHISHKOVSKY In our country the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of our famous poetess Anna Akhmatova is being widely celebrated. And at the moment, we are attempting, literally, to the nth degree, to gather together everything connected with her life, her work, her encounters, and I think that your reminiscences of those meetings with her have an absolutely priceless significance, and I know that you are well acquainted with the work of Anna Akhmatova, and that you met her. And so, might you recount your first meeting with her? ISAIAH BERLIN You called her a poetess. She despised that word. She called herself a poet. She did not acknowledge any poetesses, neither herself, nor Tsvetaeva, nor others. This is incidental. But I remember it. She was very angry about it, she said: ‘Yes, yes, they call me a poetess’, she said this in a very angry tone. The country went through the so-called Industrial Revolution when new industries sprang up and new processes were applied to the manufacture of traditional products. During the reign of King George III (1760-1820) the face of England changed. The factories were built, the industrial development was marked by an increase in the export of finished cloth rather than of raw material, coal and iron industries developed. Internal communications were largely funded. The population increased from 7 million to 14 million people. Much money was invested in road- and canal-building. The first railway line which was launched in 1830 from Liverpool to Manchester allowed many people inspired by poets of Romanticism to discover the beauty of their own country. Just as we understand the tremendous energizing influence of Puritanism in the matter of English liberty by remembering that the common people had begun to read, and that their book was the bible, so we may understand this age of popular government by remembering that the chief subject of romantic literature was the essential nobleness of common men and the value of the individual. As we read now that brief portion of history which lies between the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the English Reform Bill of 1832, we are in the presence of such mighty political upheavals that “the age of revolution” is the only name by which we can adequately characterize it.
