Sci-Fi and Fantasy Library Catalogue Sci-fi and Fantasy Library Catalogue Welcome to the Sci-fi and Fantasy Society Library! With over 1,300 books, including more than 150 from various TV and film universes, and some 1,600 2000AD comics, there is almost certainly something for everyone. For all comic lovers, our Prog collection is fairly complete from issue 422 onwards, but we also have some earlier Progs, Judge Dredd Magazines, Monthly Specials and various other 2000AD publications. There’s currently no open space to browse the physical books but we’re working on it and by Christmas, will also have extended the library to audiobooks and radio dramas! In the meantime, here is a list of our books. For everything else, I’m happy to talk you through what we have. For borrowing, recommendations (either for yourself or us), donations (always welcome) or a chat about sci-fi and fantasy, feel free to email me [email protected]. If you notice any glaringly obvious mistakes (I’ve tried being careful but there are a lot of books), please let me know so I can fix them. Enjoy! • The Nemedian Chroniclers #22 [WS16]
REHeapa Winter Solstice 2016 By Lee A. Breakiron A WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON Few fiction authors are as a widely published internationally as Robert E. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries. GERMANY, AUSTRIA, AND SWITZERLAND The first Howard stories published in German were in the fanzines Pioneer #25 and Lands of Wonder ‒ Pioneer #26 (Austratopia, Vienna) in 1968 and Pioneer of Wonder #28 (Follow, Passau, Germany) in 1969.

Paperback , pages. This power, which keeps the city from falling to the Dark Empire, could keep the Kamarg safe. If you are the author or copyright holder and you intend to warn us about possible copyright infringement, you can use our contact form. The destroyer of his own cruel and ancient race, as well as its final ruler, Elric is the bearer of a destiny as dark and cursed as the vampiric sword he carries - the sentient black blade known as Stormbringer. On his solo journey, he happens upon a castle where he takes refuge with - and then falls in love with - the keeper of the castle, the beautiful Sabrina. Or better yet, a journey through time? Pub Date: Nov. Perhaps a hunt for aliens could lift his spirits? After the particularly horrific destruction of a city in which he played a role, von Bek decides to desert the military company he was working for and travel alone for awhile before seeking further employment. I've always loved Fortress as it felt almost like a travelogue of human nature, but Revenge would have to come a very close second. See 1 question about Elric…. View Results. Comment Post Cancel. No spoilers in the review, but it rocks.

(I suppose you could call this a "fix-up" bibliography since it is the melding of previously "published" material into a new unified whole. And, in the true van Vogtian tradition, I've not only revised it but I've given it a new title as well.) The last versions of both are still available for download as a single ZIP file for those who would like them for whatever reason. The format of the Compendium has been retained with only a few alterations while adding the bibliographic information of the Database. A section for short stories has accordingly been added. The ugly and outdated Database is eliminated, while retaining all of its positive traits, and the usefulness of the Compendium is drastically improved. No longer will you have to jump between the two while looking something up — all information has been pooled into just one document. This new format's interface is more intuitive, alphabetically arranged rather than chronological, and with all items thoroughly cross- indexed with internal hyperlinks.

REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2017 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART TWO By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw last time, the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was the first amateur press association (apa) dedicated to that author. Its founder, Tim C. Marion, started it in 1972 when he was 13 and edited it through the first 19 of its bimonthly Mailings, but left afterward since he was ultimately more interested in fan activities than Howard as a literary figure. Before that, discontent with his leadership and with the real dearth of worthwhile essays and critiques during the early years led to future literary critic Don Herron and others to leave and create The Hyperborian League (THL) apa in October, 1975. Its official editor (OE) was Herron and it was “devoted to the creative discussion of authors Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard and their works,” though material on other fantasy writers and poets was welcomed. Herron said he spelled the name of the apa “Hyperborian” rather than “Hyperborean” because he wanted to emphasize the fact that it was devoted to both CAS (whence Hyperborean) and REH (whence Hyborian). It would still be occasionally misspelled, even on covers. Its official organ document was titled “Skull & Sandalwood,” suggested by REH’s “Skull-Face” and CAS’s Sandalwood. The fanzines composing the quarterly Mailings were at first stapled by the contributors and left so by the OE, who collected them and mailed them out to the current individual members. He also distributed some copies to libraries, sent “speculative” (“spec”) copies to recruit prospective members, and sold remaining ones to defray postage costs.

  • Non-Spurious Correlations Between Genetic and Linguistic Diversities in the Context of Human Evolution
Non-Spurious Correlations between Genetic and Linguistic Diversities in the Context of Human Evolution Dan Dediu Bsc. Math. Comp. Sci., Msc. Neurobiol. Behav. A thesis submitted in fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to Linguistics and English Language School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences University of Edinburgh February 2007 © Copyright 2006 by Dan Dediu Declaration I hereby declare that this thesis is of my own composition, and that it contains no material previously submitted for the award of any other degree. The work reported in this thesis has been executed by myself, except where due acknowledgment is made in the text. Dan Dediu iii iv Abstract This thesis concerns human diversity, arguing that it represents not just some form of noise, which must be filtered out in order to reach a deeper explanatory level, but the engine of human and language evolution, metaphorically put, the best gift Nature has made to us. This diversity must be understood in the context of (and must shape) human evolution, of which the Recent Out-of-Africa with Replacement model (ROA) is currently regarded, especially outside palaeoanthropology, as a true theory. It is argued, using data from palaeoanthropology, human population genetics, ancient DNA studies and primatology, that this model must be, at least, amended, and most probably, rejected, and its alternatives must be based on the concept of reticulation. The relationships between the genetic and linguistic diversities is complex, including inter- individual genetic and behavioural differences (behaviour genetics) and inter-population differences due to common demographic, geographic and historic factors (spurious correlations), used to study (pre)historical processes.

  • English Bartolomé Esteban Murillo Fourth Centenary
ENGLISH BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO FOURTH CENTENARY To mark the four hundredth anniversary of Murillo’s birth, this museum has brought together fifty-five of his works. Universal artist identified with Seville, inter- preting the themes of the city’s devotion, dec- orating some of its most emblematic monu- ments with his paintings, and capturing its residents from all walks of life on his canvases. The exhibition is organised around thematic criteria reflecting the painter’s personal vision of the religious and civic context in which he lived. His profound, intuitive and eminently humane eye enabled him to render that con- text in an inspiring manner, whether he was painting beggars or nobles. His creative skill and sincere spirituality are also clearly mani- fested in the devotional paintings he produced, which are filled with details of daily life, while his moving conception of the transcendental is [ 2 ] [ 3 ] conveyed through images that are both highly original and beautiful. The nine sections into which the exhibition is divided provide a glimpse of the world through Murillo’s eyes: from the religious paintings which introduced such memorable prototypes in the history of art—with a particular exper- tise in the case of the Immaculate Concep- tion—to the social reality of 17th-century Se- ville, a city of paupers and saints, of rascals and wealthy noblemen and merchants who could afford to have their portraits painted by the famous master. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to revisit many of his works and discover new ones. Above all, it is a chance to see how Mu- rillo combines his genius use of technical and I.

Editorial There are several books in my collection which, every time I read them, raise my blood pressure to life threatening levels. Fortunately for me, and my blood pressure, I can use such books as the inspiration for (what I consider) interesting and (hopefully) enlightening editorials. Into this category falls Jerry Pournelle's epic work - A Step Further Out. Some of the ideas that Jerry Pournelle expounds in this book are so tenuous that the slightest breath of common-sense should be enough to blow them into that murky quagmire reserved for all half-baked ideas.
