    II. AD CLERI DISCIPLINAM: THE VINCENTIAN SEMINARY APOSTOLATE IN THE UNITED STATES by Stafford Poole, C.M. The seminary apostolate first brought the Vincentian Community to the United States, and this apostolate remained one of its principal works until recent times. The Vincentians were also one of the few communities that came to the United States for the explicit purpose of establishing a diocesan seminary. The Vincentian Tradition It is commonly believed that seminaries as they are known today originated with the Council of Trent. This is only partly true. The famous decree on the erection of seminaries (Session 23, chapter 28) inspired many bishops and reformers to undertake some form of clerical formation, but it provided very little in the way of guide­ lines or practical suggestions. Most efforts to found seminaries along the model given by Trent were failures. Modern seminaries grew up in seventeenth century France and took their origins from ordination retreats, such as that devised by Saint Vincent de Paul for the Diocese of Beauvais, in which candidates for orders were given rudimentary training in the essentials of their ministry. Prior to the French Revolution seminaries were rarely self-contained academic institutions. They presupposed that academic education was received elsewhere, and they concentrated on such matters as the administration of the sacraments, ceremonies, plain-chant, and other things necessary for the practical exercise of priestly ministry. Soon, however, programs of spiritual formation were added. 97 Understandably, the courses were often short and the faculties small. A sojourn in a seminary could be as brief as six months or as long as three years.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 6/7/17 CONTACT: NOELL BARNIDGE (912) 644-7008 3 Benedictine monks to join priory at Benedictine Military School SAVANNAH, Ga. – Three Benedictine monks from Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa., will join the priory at Benedictine Military School this summer and become involved in the Benedictine ministry at the school in the fall. They are Fr. Jean-Luc Zadroga, O.S.B., who hails from the Pittsburgh area; Brother Matthew Hershey, O.S.B., a native of State College, Pa., and Brother David Klecker, O.S.B., who is from Minnesota. All three will become involved with campus ministry. Zadroga and Hershey will teach theology, and Hershey also will become involved with the sports programs. Klecker, who also is a deacon, will become involved with information technology. Zadroga earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy in 1997 from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, and master of divinity and master of arts degrees in theology from Saint Vincent Seminary in 2001. He was ordained a deacon in 2000 and a priest in May 2001 in the Diocese of Pittsburgh by Bishop Donald Wuerl. From 2001-02 he served as parochial vicar of Saint Margaret of Scotland, Green Tree. He served as secretary and master of ceremonies to Bishop Wuerl from 2002-03, then as parochial vicar of Saint Sebastian Parish, Ross Township from 2003-05. In December of 2005 he was named parochial vicar of Saint James Parish, Sewickley, where he served until July 2008, when he entered the novitiate at Saint Vincent. Additionally, he served as chaplain for North Catholic High School from 2004-08.

    Father Giles Nealen, O.S.B. Sunday, December 29, 1996 The Rev. Giles L. Nealen, O.S.B., 73, a priest-monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey, died Sunday, December 29, 1996, in Home the monastic infirmary from heart failure. Who We Are He was born in Nicktown, Pennsylvania, September 6, 1923, attended St. Nicholas Grade School there, and was a News 1942 graduate of Spangler Public High School in Spangler. He received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from Multimedia Saint Vincent College in 1948, and did his priesthood studies at Saint Vincent Seminary. Heart to Heart Fr. Giles entered the Benedictine monastic community of Saint Vincent Archabbey in 1945. He made simple profession of vows on February 13, 1946, and solemn profession of vows on February 13, 1949. He was ordained a Stewardship priest in Saint Vincent Archabbey Church by the late Bishop John Dearden of Pittsburgh on May 15, 1951.
