Formerly a Benedictine monk at Saint Vincent, Roman Verostko is a key figure in the development of generative, algorithmic art. Curated by Kerry Morgan and Melanie Pankau at Minneapolis College of Art and Design the exhibition features over seventy original works from Saint Vincent’s holdings. Verostko’s retrospective exhibition is organized around major themes that appear throughout Verostko’s work such as his search for an art of pure form, his interest in logic and language, his merging of Eastern and Western aesthetics and philosophy, and his understanding of his home “Pathway Studio” as a modern day electronic symposium. In addition, exhibitions featuring art and artifacts exploring Saint Vincent’s rich creative history will be on view. 14 HISTORY 15 HISTORY DINNER THEATRE HISTORY HISTORY at Saint Vincent College collects, preserves, interprets, and and College collects, preserves, interprets, Vincent Saint at Come and join us for the fifth season of our own historic take on dinner dinner take on historic the fifth own our for season us of join Come and The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Coverlet McCarl and Muriel The Foster Selections from the collection are permanently displayed at the Fred the Fred at displayed permanently the collectionSelections are from theater. To many the Universe is a closed book of secrets never to be read. Almost four hundred years ago, an unknown court mathematician in Italy opened that book and laid the foundation for modern science. Galileo Galilei turned his telescope to the heavens to discover mountains and craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, and countless stars never before seen. Even more significant was his method of observation and mathematical analysis. He taught future scientists the way to discover the laws of nature.

Generative art, or art created with coding as a central characteristic, emerges as the focus of the McCarl Coverlet Gallery’s spring exhibit which focuses on computing technology in the early textile industry. The coverlets emerge as early examples of generative art using an autonomous system, or using an external system to which the artist gives partial or total control. An important highlight in the history of generative art is the invention of the Jacquard loom in 1801. The handloom itself featured a weaving attachment that introduced the concept of a stored “computer-like” program in the form of punched-cards. These automated cards allowed weavers to produce and replicate complex patterns in textiles quickly and efficiently. Jacquard’s invention revolutionized the weaving industry and punch-card technology paved the way for the invention of both the computer and later forms of generative and algorithmic art.

Learn about camp life and the struggle for African inclusion in the Continental Army, General Washington’s involvement with creating an all-African-American regiment at Valley Forge and why he ordered it to be abolished in 1780. The program uses an array of techniques to tell the story in song, activity, demonstration, Q&A or with poetry. The program tells the story of these Black soldiers, free or enslaved, rebel or loyalist, and their hero, “Jack Sisson,” will illuminate their forgotten service at the birth of the nation,

For 48 years, the Saint Vincent College Concert Series has presented world-class performances by internationally acclaimed artists each academic year. The series emphasizes the traditional classical chamber music repertoire, as well as artists of other genres. Performers have won national and international competitions and have performed on many of the world’s greatest stages.

The Saturday evening concerts are held in various locales on campus, including the Robert S. Carey Performing Arts Center, the Archabbey Basilica and the Basilica Crypt. All performances begin at 7 p.m., with a reception following to meet the artists. A free shuttle van runs between the designated parking areas and the Carey Performing Arts Center before and after the concerts.

Founded in 1971, the Concert Series is directed by Thomas Octave, associate professor of music at Saint Vincent College. Each year Saint Vincent awards the Bronder Prize for Piano to an exceptionally-talented young pianist at the beginning of his or her career. The prize is named for the Concert Series’ founder, Father Joseph Bronder, O.S.B., a concert pianist a graduate of Yale, and classical music performer.

Start off the Christmas season with the Saint Vincent Camerata’s traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols in the Saint Vincent Basilica. The Camerata was created in the spirit of the Florentine “Camerata dei Bardi”, a 16th century gathering of friends dedicated to music, poetry, art, and science. Comprised of singers from the College, Seminary, Monastery and from the communities surrounding Saint Vincent Archabbey, the Camerata has been under the direction of Father Stephen Concordia, O.S.B. since 2008.

The Camerata has offered concert programs in numerous churches in the Pittsburgh area, at the Johnstown Concert Series, and, with the ‘All-University Chorus’ at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony under the direction of Manfred Honeck. They regularly perform with other distinguished choirs, including ‘Essence of Joy’ (Penn State), Schola Cantorum Franciscana (Steubenville) and with choirs in Bergamo and Lodi, during their their three choral trips to Italy. The Camerata is planning a tour of Bavarian Benedictine Monasteries in June of 2020.

When Archabbot Boniface Wimmer founded Saint Vincent in 1846, he encouraged an appreciation of drama as a means of building self-confidence and character. That appreciation has become a tradition at Saint Vincent. The popularity and wide range of dramatic activities over the years have been evident in Saint Vincent Preparatory School productions, the annual Passion Play, operettas with Saint Xavier’s Academy, college plays such as A Man for All Seasons, audience-pleasing student musicals beginning with West Side Story and student drama organizations.

In 1969, the curtain rose for the first time on a unique dramatic adventure; the Saint Vincent Summer Theatre, founded by a Benedictine monk, Father Tom Devereux. The theatre has endured for more than half a century, and has offered scores of college students the unique opportunity to work with theatre professionals in all aspects of the theatre. Thousands of lives have been enhanced by Saint Vincent Theatre’s positive impact on the artistic life of the college and surrounding community. The Theatre employs members of the Actors’ Equity Association. Each performance is in the comfortable, air-conditioned Robert S. Carey Performing Arts Center where every seat has a great view!

The Summer Theatre is well-known for its cabaret, a special after-the- show reception on the terrace of the Robert S. Carey Center to which every theatre patron is invited. Hot dogs, popcorn and beverages are served by Saint Vincent students. Proceeds from the cabaret help sustain the reception. The Summer Theatre is also well-known for its annual Gala, a festive evening of gourmet food and theatre hosted by a committee of theatre supporters. Proceeds benefit the Summer Theatre.

In addition to the Saint Vincent Summer Theatre, during the school year, a group of College students known as the Saint Vincent Players, under the direction of Summer Theatre Producing Artistic Director Greggory Brandt, performs fall and spring shows. Greggory Brandt

On December 4, 1956, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley assemble at the Sun Record recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Perkins was supposed to record a few songs with a new performer, Jerry Lee Lewis. Elvis Presley stops by the studio along with his girlfriend, a singer. Johnny Cash has stopped by to talk to recording impresario Sam Philips, who is trying to sign Cash to a new contract.

Soon, a jam session breaks out with each star opening with a verse from one of his most famous songs, songs such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Who Do You Love?” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Down by the Riverside,” Long Tall Sally,” “I Walk The Line,” and “Hound Dog.” And, as the song goes, there is a “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”

This is a “Great Balls of Fire” don’t miss production!
