However, you or a member of your family may be in denial that there are post-deployment or continuing problems or are not willing to share or accept help. You’ve got to be able to talk it out, and often--with a trusted family member, close friend, fellow or sister veteran and/or write about it or somehow express what’s going on inside you. Or it will come back on you later. My experience is that the best way to locate a good counseling resource to help you/your family deal with deployment and post-deployment issues: get a recommendation from someone you trust---such as from: • a fellow or sister Service member/vet • a military family member • a clergy or other religious/spiritual advisor/confidant • a counselor or therapist. This started out in 2008 as a one-page listing of resource suggestions for distribution at presentations. 1 • a County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO). Free sources of referral information and advocacy in the VA process. [“CVSO’s are accredited by the VA to assist Veterans and are very knowledgeable in the local community re Veteran benefits. See the national Association of County Veteran Service Officers website, as well as other state associations such as CACVSO (California).’] This information provided by Chris Bingham at [email protected]. • a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) such as The American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled Veterans of America, Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans of America, Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans Association, Iraq War Veterans Organization, National Veterans Foundation, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America et al. [See listing of veterans service organizations officially registered at www.va.gov/vso]. It should be noted that a number of active duty personnel have difficulty feeling comfortable going to a military resource for mental health concerns because of worry about stigma, the impact on their careers such as reduced security clearance, trust issues with the military system, etc. Similar trust issues characterize a number of veterans and their families in dealing with the Veterans Administration (VA) or other governmental agencies. Hence, a broad range of military, veteran’s affairs, other public and private non-profit resources (secular and religious, politically neutral or not, etc.) all are included in this listing in that all are important elements of a comprehensive array of resources that might be accessed. _________________________________________________________________________________________ The War Trauma Resources listing is divided into the following sections: I. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
