The range of situations, and of emotions, to which we can be exposed is huge. These things help to form the richness of human living. But in themselves they can sometimes be immensely difficult to handle. Jesus’ promise was to be with his friends. Although they experienced the crushing sadness of his death, and the huge sense of betrayal that most of them felt in terms of their own abandonment of him, they also experienced the joy of his resurrection and the happiness of new times spent with him. They would naturally have understood that his promise to ‘be with them’ meant that he would not physically leave them. However, what Jesus meant when he said that they would not be left on their own was that the Holy Spirit would always be with them. It is the Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, that we celebrate during the month of May. Jesus is taken from us, body and all, but the Holy Spirit is poured out for us and on to us. The Feast of the Holy Spirit is Pentecost. It happens at the end of Eastertide, and thus marks the very last transition that began weeks before when, on Ash Wednesday, we entered the wilderness in preparation for Holy Week and Eastertide to come.

The Church of England has issued new guidance on safety when meeting in church buildings, based on government guidance and instructions. Face-coverings now advised for all going into churches. “We strongly advise that face coverings should be worn by all those attending a place of worship, including ministers, worshippers, staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors, where there may be other people present; remembering that they are mainly intended to protect other people, not the wearer, from coronavirus COVID-19 and that they are not a replacement for physical distancing and regular hand washing.” Accordingly, with immediate effect, we are advising all who come into All Saints, please wear a face mask, as a sign and a means of offering safety as well as hospitality to others. If you do not have one, there are plenty in church. We suggest congregations should keep them on throughout worship but remove them carefully to receive communion. Clergy and ministers will wear them at all times except when speaking. The same advice applies when we open the church for private prayer, and for those visiting the Parish Centre. Please use sanitiser, including before and after touching masks, and keep 2m distance where possible. Young children and those with specific conditions are under no pressure to comply with guidance on masks – details later in GNFN. It has members all over the world and is not confined to Anglicans alone. Where there are sufficient members in one place or area, they combine to form a Ward, with a priest as Superior and an elected Secretary. They can organize regular services, meetings and many other activities. Five or more members may form a Cell, and organize joint prayer and fellowship. Isolated members are joined to the Headquarters Ward. The Society publishes its magazine “AVE” two times each year with details of pilgrim- ages, retreats, festival services, etc. It is free to all members and is the effective link between the various Regions. The Society is not affiliated to any single Shrine or Marian institution, and is the only organization endeavoring to promote equally all the different aspects of devotion to Mary. THE SOCIETY RULE OF LIFE The Society is dedicated to the glory of God and in honor of the Holy Incarnation under the invocation of Our Lady, Help of Christians. 1. The South Ormsby Group, in the north of the Deanery, has for 60 years been a powerful expression of God’s love to people within and beyond its boundaries. However, the basic concept that we can continue to keep the parish system alive by continually making larger and larger groups to create a Group that fits the available resources and supply of incumbents is evidently destined to failure. Thirty Churches to one incumbent is unworkable and unsellable. Nor is it acceptable that we make the shape fit our “ideal” by closing down Churches and concentrating on a few centres.

Those of you who know us, however, are aware that that impression is very far from being the truth. Yes, people who come here do comment on the peaceful atmosphere but the peace is made; it doesn’t come naturally. “Seek peace and pursue it,” says St Benedict in his Rule. So it was very helpful when Ampleforth Abbey hosted a conference for Guest Masters and Mistresses from the 14th-17th January. Sr Mary Bernadette and Louise attended and found much to stimulate new ideas. A popular idea has been a prayer walk, guiding people round the grounds, pointing out what they may see and suggesting thoughts for meditation. Our website and facebook page appear to be very popular and there are constant requests from people who want to have Quiet Days or residential retreats. IN MARCH Judith Pollard, a priest in the fi nal year of her curacy at Newark, came on a placement for two weeks and contributed much to our life in that short time. Shortly after she left we had a sadness in that our postulant, Gabriele, decided God was not calling her to join our Community and she left us on the 26th March. We are very grateful for all she gave us during her six months with us and wish her every blessing for the future.

What does August mean to you? Perhaps it’s holidays and time away with family or friends or maybe it’s a time of sitting in the warmth of the sunshine on these light evenings enjoying a glass of wine. Or is it the excitement of the thunderstorms or watching the ripening corn in the field. Or maybe it’s that extra time on your hands to enjoy in any way you want. For children it’s a time to abandon the daily rush and routine of the school day. For families it’s a time to get away together often chasing the sunshine, although perhaps not this year, as we have been blessed with an abundance. For those who have grandchildren perhaps it’s a time for helping out with child care. In the summer God makes the daylight longer and warmer so that the crops and fruits ripen. But it also gives us the chance to be out in the evening where we might be able to talk to people who in the winter are hidden in their homes. It is also a pointer toward heaven when there shall no longer be any night. Long days show the glory of a God who is light, and in whom there is no darkness at all. God creates the summer to give us opportunities to travel and see His handiwork in other places or even enjoy what is on our own doorstep.

It’s a familiar story from the gospel of John, which tells of Mary taking a jar of expensive perfume and, in a moment of seemingly reckless extravagance, pouring the sweet-smelling perfume over the feet of Jesus before wiping it away with her hair. This apparent waste horrifies Judas Iscariot, who will go on to betray Jesus and hand him over to the Jewish police, and ultimately to the occupying Roman Army to be crucified. It is a poignant and powerful story of human love and generosity, jealousy and betrayal. I encourage you to reach for your bible and read the story again for yourself, because it is also a wonderful illustration of the generous and extravagant God whom you and I profess, and whose love is most perfectly expressed for us in the death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate at Easter. In her care for Jesus, Mary’s actions speak of love and generosity, of honouring Jesus. By contrast, Judas is consumed by jealousy, spite and, ultimately, betrayal. The irony is that both Mary and Judas are needed in our story: Mary’s extravagance points to the overflowing generosity of God, which we see most profoundly in the death and resurrection of Jesus; it is Judas’ betrayal of Jesus that leads to Jesus’ death, making the resurrection possible.
