All Saints St. Mary’s NETTLEHAM PARISH CHURCH RISEHOLME PARISH CHURCH The August Good News from Nettleham Thursday 1st 2019 to Saturday 31st August Trinity 7-10 No 112 Reverend Judy writes….. What does August mean to you? Perhaps it’s holidays and time away with family or friends or maybe it’s a time of sitting in the warmth of the sunshine on these light evenings enjoying a glass of wine. Or is it the excitement of the thunderstorms or watching the ripening corn in the field. Or maybe it’s that extra time on your hands to enjoy in any way you want. For children it’s a time to abandon the daily rush and routine of the school day. For families it’s a time to get away together often chasing the sunshine, although perhaps not this year, as we have been blessed with an abundance. For those who have grandchildren perhaps it’s a time for helping out with child care. In the summer God makes the daylight longer and warmer so that the crops and fruits ripen. But it also gives us the chance to be out in the evening where we might be able to talk to people who in the winter are hidden in their homes. It is also a pointer toward heaven when there shall no longer be any night. Long days show the glory of a God who is light, and in whom there is no darkness at all. God creates the summer to give us opportunities to travel and see His handiwork in other places or even enjoy what is on our own doorstep. To see mountains, lakes, rivers, plains, oceans and even here in Nettleham to play in the beck. Summer is for seeing and showing God. Summer is not a spiritual void, yes we do slightly less in church but it gives us the opportunity to see where God is displaying his glories, where He is caressing the world with mercy. Gods summer kindness is meant to lead us to join with Him in the light of his love. We sense that God is passing through the land with special blessing in these summer days. Quote of the month….. I love how late July and the month of August just hang there and make themselves felt, the heat all around us like God's love. We feel how intense it can be, and in making itself felt all we can do is surrender. When we surrender to God (as to Nature), the earth turns and tilts, the sun sleeps and wakes, the stars show themselves then hide, and we realise we are mere observers. All we can do is sit and slumber in God's heat, and though we do so little, God takes care of so much. He even finds the time to give us the welcoming trickle of the beck. Simon Vincent Prayer of the week… Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. - Author Unknown In need of prayer…. Tuesday 6 August. Film night in The Parish Centre. Part documentary and part fictional folk tale, The Cave Of The Yellow Dog follows Nansal Batchuluun, the eldest daughter of a nomadic Mongolian family, who finds a small dog and names him Zochor. Her father refuses to let her keep it, believing it will bring the family bad luck and lead wolves to their sheep but Nansal decides to defy her father by hiding it from the family. It is a beautifully filmed study of a Mongolian family, and is touching not only on a very human but also surprisingly spiritual level. Directed by Byambasuren Davaa. Words from the Church of England... We believe that responding to climate change is an essential part of our responsibility to safeguard God's creation. Our environmental campaign exists to enable the whole church to address - in faith, practice and mission - the issue of climate change. "Reducing the causes of climate change is essential to the life of faith. It is a way to love our neighbour and to steward the gift of creation." Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury Creationtide’ or the ‘Season of Creation’ is the period in the annual church calendar (from 1st September to 4th October) dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life.
