August 15th, 2021 Tljdž AǔǔǖǎǑǕNJǐǏ PǂǔǕǐǓ’ǔ CǐǓǏdžǓ ǐLJ Ǖljdž BǍdžǔǔdžDž VNJǓLjNJǏ MǂǓǚ Dear Parishioners and Friends of St Denis, What a joy it is when the Solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother, body and soul, into heaven falls on a Sunday! Here in the United States, as in many countries around the world, it is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics M no matter what day of the week it happens to fall on M but this year, we get to observe the Feast and fulfill our Sunday obligation at the same time. The 15th of August is an important day in the life of Dominicans, because for most of us it happens to be the anniversary of our first profession of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. (I made my vows 36 years ago! Yikes!) And that’s because it was August 15th, the Assumption, when St. Dominic received the vows of the first brethren and then dispersed them, twobytwo, to all the major university centers in Europe in the early 13th century. This bold move on St. Dominic’s part led to the newlyfounded Order of Preachers spreading like wildfire throughout both Western and Eastern Europe. Last week in my “Pastor’s Corner,” I shared with you a mystical vision that St. Dominic was privileged to receive and how our Lord told him that He had entrusted the Order of Preachers to the protection of His Blessed Mother. I truly believe that Our Lady is busy at work in the 21st century, raising up an army of Dominican preachers for our present day and age. Of the fourteen young men who received the holy habit of our Order this past weekend, eleven of them took some form of the name “Mary” as an honorific name after their given religious name. A twelfth novice took the second name “Rosario,” which is equally MASS INTENTIONS Marian! Of the six friars who will make their First Vows this Sunday out in Cincinnati, OH, all six of them took some form of Sat., Aug. 14 5:00 pm M For the People of St Denis the name Mary as part of their religious name. • Dominican Missions in the Vatican Expostition
CJJominican 8v!issions in the Vatican Exposition By BRO. DALMATIUS MARRIN, 0. P. HEN Pope Innocent III in 1216 gave to St. Dominic and I] his disciples the title of "Friars Preachers," he seemed to have done so under a divine inspiration. Thirty-five years from the inception of the Order, its missions had extended to all parts of the world, to Eastern Europe, Africa, the Graeco-Schismatic Orient, Armenia, Cbaldea and Persia, even as far as India. And today after seven centuries, the same mis sionary spirit impressed by St. Dominic on his sons is seen most conspicuously in the part taken by Dominicans in the Vatican Exposition, not the least glorious of the observances ordered by Pius XI in connection with the celebration of the Holy Year. The thought of the Supreme Pontiff, who deservedly is called the "Pope of the Missions," to have an exposition where Catholic missionary endeavor could be vividly set forth, was a most happy one. The Order of Preachers, always to the front in carrying the torch of truth to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, could not but enter whole-heartedly into a project of this kind. The work of those placed in charge of the Dominican exhibit has been wonderfully successful, a brief de scription of which will undoubtedly prove of interest. The Order's contributions are disposed throughout the seven sections of the Exposition, namely, of History, the Martyrs, the Library, Statistics, the Native Clergy, the Ethnological and Med ical Sections. In the last named Dominican Missions are repre sented by a wonderful exhibit brought there by Fr.

Selections from the Supplement to the Liturgy of the Hours for the Order of Preachers A Draft Translation of the Proprium Officiorum Ordinis Praedicatorum (1982) for Study and Consultation: Dominican Liturgical Commission, U.S.A. Chicago, 1991 DIFFERENT ELEMENTS IN THE OFFICES: Historical Notes 25. In accord with the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours a short biographical note has been placed at the beginning of the proper Office of each Saint or Blessed. As is the case for some Propers of certain religious families and dioceses, these short biographical notices were written in a fuller manner and edited according to contemporary historico-critical findings by the office of the Postulator General of the Order." Thus, the desire of many has been satisfied, namely, the desire for spiritual nourishment, not only from the second readings of the Office of Readings, but also from the biographical note which describes the unique characteristics of the spiritual life, the teaching, or the pastoral activity of the Saint or Blessed. These notes can serve as an initial introduction to the Saint or Blessed or as a homiletic aid, as well as a source for personal meditation. General Introduction, p. xxxiv. Foreword In our pluralistic age we recognize many traditions have special gifts to make to a rich, well-balanced spirituality for our time. My own life has shown me the spiritual tradition stemming from St. Dominic, like that from his contemporary St. Francis, provides ever fresh insights. No tradition, however, can be understood merely by looking at its origins. We must see it unfold historically in those who have been formed by that tradition in many times and situations and have furthered its development. To know its essential strength, we need to see it tested, undergoing deformations yet recovering and growing. Therefore, I have tried to survey its eight centuries to give some sense of its chronology and its individual personalities, and of the inclusive Dominican Family. I have aimed only to provide a sketch to encourage readers to use the bibliography to explore further, but with regret I have omitted all documentation except to indicate the source of quotations. On November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution “Munificentissimus Deus”, pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity from 1940 to 1950.
