Chicago, 1991 DIFFERENT ELEMENTS IN THE OFFICES: Historical Notes 25. In accord with the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours a short biographical note has been placed at the beginning of the proper Office of each Saint or Blessed. As is the case for some Propers of certain religious families and dioceses, these short biographical notices were written in a fuller manner and edited according to contemporary historico-critical findings by the office of the Postulator General of the Order." Thus, the desire of many has been satisfied, namely, the desire for spiritual nourishment, not only from the second readings of the Office of Readings, but also from the biographical note which describes the unique characteristics of the spiritual life, the teaching, or the pastoral activity of the Saint or Blessed. These notes can serve as an initial introduction to the Saint or Blessed or as a homiletic aid, as well as a source for personal meditation. General Introduction, p. xxxiv. CENTRAL PROVINCE INITIATE FORMATION 4. STUDY “WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE EVEN ZEAL IS NOT GOOD.” (Proverbs 19: 2) STUDY is the next pillar of the Dominican Order. It is fitting that it should follow Prayer because Dominicans see both as flowing one into the other. To a Dominican Study is the contemplation of ‘Veritas’ (Truth) and God is Truth. So our Study is another form of Prayer which is why the Dominican takes Study so seriously. THE CHURCH Of course Study is not simply the province of the Dominican but is necessary for all Christians, ordained, consecrated and lay. The Church assures us of this: “Since they are called by baptism to lead a life in keeping with the teaching of the gospel, the Christian faithful have the right to a Christian education by which they are to be instructed properly to strive for the maturity of the human person and at the same time to know and live the mystery of salvation”. (Canon 217) The Church encourages all to seek out and pursue this knowledge: “Lay people who are capable and trained may also collaborate in catechetical formation, in teaching the sacred sciences, and in use of the communications media.” (Catechism 906) This knowledge should be shared with others: “In accord with the knowledge, competence, and preeminence which they possess, [lay people] have the right and even at times a duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church, and they have a right to make their opinion known to the other Christian faithful with due regard to the integrity of faith and morals…( Canon 212) 1 The Church was founded to spread the kingdom of Christ throughout the world.

OurLadyoftheHolyRosaryProvince,OP DOMINICAN SPIRITUALITY Principles and Practice By WILLIAM A. HINNEBUSCH, O.P. Illustrations by SISTER MARY OF THE COMPASSION, O.P. http://www.domcentral.org/trad/domspirit/default.htm DOMINICANSPIRITUALITY 1 OurLadyoftheHolyRosaryProvince,OP FOREWORD Most of this book originated in a series of conferences to the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of the Most Holy Cross, Amityville, New York, at Dominican Commercial High School, Jamaica, L. I., during the Lent of 1962. All the conferences have been rewritten with some minor deletions and the addition of considerable new material. The first chapter is added as a general introduction to Dominican life to serve as a unifying principle for the rest of the book. I have also adapted the material to the needs of a wider reading audience. No longer do I address the sister but the Dominican. While some matter applies specifically to nuns or sisters, the use of masculine nouns and pronouns elsewhere by no means indicates that I am addressing only the members of the First Order. Though the forms and methods of their spiritual life vary to some degree ( especially that of the secular tertiary), all Dominicans share the same basic vocation and follow the same spiritual path. I must thank the sisters of the Amityville community for their interest in the conferences, the sisters of Dominican Commercial High School for taping and mimeographing them, the fathers and the sisters of other Congregations who suggested that a larger audience might welcome them. I am grateful to the fathers especially of the Dominican House of Studies, Washington, D.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Hail Mary Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen. The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. The Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

  • Venerable Louis of Granada
VENERABLE LOUIS OF GRANADA Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain helped Columbus to discover t his continent. These same sovereigns gave the deathblow t o the well-nigh immortal foe of Ch ristendom in the conquest of Granada by breaking the power of the Moor and expelling him from Europe. To populate the land vacated by the Moor they offe red Spanish settlers many inducements and privileges. Among other adventurers enticed by s uch prospects came a young couple from the extreme northwestern Province of Galicia bearing the name of Sarria. They were of ancient and honest Christian origin, but they were poor. Consequently when Sarria, the head of the family, died, his wife and her tender child were dependent on charity. This little child was the future Louis of Granada and under these circumstances was he born in 1504, the year that records also the birth of the great Do minican Pope, St. Pius V. Louis quarrelled with a playmate outside the Castle walls of the Duke, the governor of that territory. The Duke inter fered and, greatly impressed by Louis' able defence of himself and by his winning disposition undertook the youth's education. Thus was he enabled to learn Latin with the Duke's own sons. Although worldly honors now loomed up before him, an interior light shone brighter, and Louis unhesitatingly followed the in spiration. It was a Dominican vocation. He felt keenly the separation from his poor mother, but he did not forget her. As a novice he daily set aside a half of hi s own meagre dinner and sent it to her.

  • Dominican Missions in the Vatican Expostition
CJJominican 8v!issions in the Vatican Exposition By BRO. DALMATIUS MARRIN, 0. P. HEN Pope Innocent III in 1216 gave to St. Dominic and I] his disciples the title of "Friars Preachers," he seemed to have done so under a divine inspiration. Thirty-five years from the inception of the Order, its missions had extended to all parts of the world, to Eastern Europe, Africa, the Graeco-Schismatic Orient, Armenia, Cbaldea and Persia, even as far as India. And today after seven centuries, the same mis sionary spirit impressed by St. Dominic on his sons is seen most conspicuously in the part taken by Dominicans in the Vatican Exposition, not the least glorious of the observances ordered by Pius XI in connection with the celebration of the Holy Year. The thought of the Supreme Pontiff, who deservedly is called the "Pope of the Missions," to have an exposition where Catholic missionary endeavor could be vividly set forth, was a most happy one. The Order of Preachers, always to the front in carrying the torch of truth to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, could not but enter whole-heartedly into a project of this kind. The work of those placed in charge of the Dominican exhibit has been wonderfully successful, a brief de scription of which will undoubtedly prove of interest. The Order's contributions are disposed throughout the seven sections of the Exposition, namely, of History, the Martyrs, the Library, Statistics, the Native Clergy, the Ethnological and Med ical Sections. In the last named Dominican Missions are repre sented by a wonderful exhibit brought there by Fr.
