FROM THE RECTORY BURTON BRADSTOCK, DT6 4QS TEL: 01308 898799 The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited every parish in the country to participate in a Call to Prayer in the week leading up to Pentecost which falls in May. During this time we're asked to join in a wave of prayer throughout the Church of , focussing on seven words from the Lord's Prayer 'Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.' The Call to Prayer will extend between May 8th and May 15th and on those Sundays I hope that the themes of God's kingdom and God's will can be woven into the prayer and preaching in our Valley churches. Apart from the way we incorporate the Call to Prayer in our formal services, this will be an occasion for any individual, if they so wish, to take these words from the Lord's Prayer into their own pattern of praying at home or elsewhere.

Sunday May 8th also sees a significant anniversary in the worshipping life of our Diocese and the wider church. Lay Readers (LMMs) will have been a part of the Church of England's ministerial pattern for 150 years and on May 8th our LMMs, James Webster and Mike Read and Yvonne Buckland will be preaching at services at churches in the Valley to help mark this important anniversary. This is a good moment to thank Yvonne and James and Mike for their vital contribution to the life of the churches in our part of .

This Spring, the Reverend Peter Saunt who, with his wife Tito has been a great support to the ministry in the Bride Valley, has celebrated his 80th birthday; we send our best wishes to Peter and thank him for his contributions to church life here.

The following study and worship sessions, each to take place during May and June, come with full recommendation - places can be booked with the Reverend Elfreda Savigear (who is organizing these sessions) on 424031 – there are fuller details on posters distributed to each of the Bride Valley churches:

A study day on ‘The Book of Ruth’ by a tutor from Sarum College. St Mary’s Church , Tuesday 10 May from 10 till 4. Bring your own lunch, drinks provided. Donations please.

Gospel Choir Day at St John’s Church West Bay Saturday 21 May – this will be led by Jo Sercombe, an experienced and talented choral trainer.

‘Understanding Dementia’ a day course with Diana and Peter Wright, to take place on Saturday 4 June at St Andrew’s Church Charmouth 9.15 a.m. till 4. 00pm. Please book by 25 May.

FROM THE REGISTERS On 1st February family and friends gathered at Weymouth Crematorium for the funeral of Jeanette Cecilie Porter, known to everyone as Jean.

Jean was born in Staffordshire, as a child moved to Bromsgrove where she trained and worked as a Secretary, married Percy and then on retirement moved to Burton Bradstock (with all her family!).

Jean and her late husband Percy involved themselves in the community, fetes, and in St Mary's Church where her ashes were buried on 2nd of February. Jean leaves a daughter, Diane, who is married to Rob Fedden.

We pray that the words of the Lord from Jean’s special poem Footprints may be their comfort in the coming days

‘during your trials and testings when you saw only one set of footprints tt was then that I carried you.’ Ryder Rogers

A CRY FOR HELP Some of you may remember when a Coffee Morning was held in the hall at Puncknowle to raise money for The Uparo Project to help people in Tanzania. With the nearest Doctor 60 miles away it was decided to build where the local Africans could bring their families for treatment. The money raised paid for three medical workers and a midwife and for the drugs they would need, making a huge difference to the lives of the local people.

Now, at a recent committee meeting in Good Books, Veronica Zeigler’s daughter, working in Kenya, told us that the women in the area where she is working would be extremely grateful for sewing machines so that they could make clothes for themselves or to sell to make a living for their families. If you have an old machine you no longer use and would be kind enough to donate it to this worthy cause please would you contact me, Pam Coventry, on 01308 897765.

BRIDE VALLEY MESSY CHURCH NEWS Our monthly services have been going well, with new faces arriving each month. We’ve now outgrown our space in Puncknowle church and in April, Messy Church moved to Puncknowle Village Hall. The extra space allows us to offer a greater range of activities as well as accommodate more people.

Members of Puncknowle church have been very helpful and welcoming. Their support has ensured this new service got off to a good start.

March’s service looked at the various stages of the Easter story, beginning with Palm Sunday, followed by the last Supper, when we had hot cross buns and coffee instead of bread and wine. You could have heard a pin drop when Liz read the story of what happened on Good Friday. Everyone Easter garden made at Messy Church March 2016 was spellbound, even the youngest children, and some of the adults were visibly moved. We finished with the story of the Resurrection, told through a short drama, ending up with (of course!) lots of chocolate eggs.

The theme of April’s service was “After the Easter eggs…what happened next?” when we used a variety of activities to explore key events between Easter and Pentecost. May’s service will take place on Pentecost Sunday (115th May) so expect plenty of wind and fire!

From July 2016 we shall be meeting on the second Sunday of the month rather than the third as we currently do, but still at Puncknowle Village Hall.

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS (SPAB) The above is running an initiative called the Maintenance Co-operative Project, the aim of which is to encourage, assist and educate teams of volunteers across the country, with a little time to spare, to maintain their local churches. Many churches have a

6 band of volunteers already but for those who don’t, or for that do but would appreciate some assistance, we will be there to help.

If you are interested and would like to hear more please can you read the guide on the SPAB website: http://www.spabmcp.org.uk

I am based in Portesham but hope to gather a team of about ten volunteers to offer a helping hand to churches from Bridport to Dorchester. If you are interested, please contact me on 01305-871317.

TOTS AND PRAM SERVICE An informal friendly service for all tots, babies and bumps and their parents/carers is held at St Mary’s Church Burton Bradstock on the second Friday of each month (except August) at 2.15 pm. It includes singing, activities, story time, refreshments and playtime. You’re welcome to the services held on Friday 13th May and Friday 10th June.

For more information about the tots events please contact either Audrey on 897227 or Heather on 897780.

CHARISMATIC SPIRITUAL FUEL Village churches aim to cater for all, so many have a ‘middle-of- the-road’ tradition. Country dwellers with a ‘high’ or ‘evangelical’ tradition often struggle about whether to go into a bigger town for worship most natural to them, or to support their local parish.

“The Filling Station Network aims to square that circle for Charismatic Christians”, says the Revd Daniel Ingles, Curate in the Team, “With meetings on weekday evenings, usually in market towns, they feed those who need to worship in lively and informal ways at least some times. That can encourage them to support a more traditional local church on Sunday.”

Learn more or find your local group at www.thefillingstation.org.uk.

Cruse Bereavement Care runs an informal monthly meeting at Bridport Hospital for any who have been bereaved. Feel free to drop in any time between 10.00am and 12.00 on the 3rd Friday of each month for a “cuppa” and a chat. Contact Diana Wright 01308 456 967

BURTON BRADSTOCK CE VC SCHOOL As I write this report we have just returned to school for the Summer term following the Easter break. Despite the Spring term being a short term in comparison to others it was a very busy one. The Summer term is longer but proving to be equally as busy!

We ended the Spring term with our Easter Service in the Church. The service started with a spring poem read beautifully by our Reception and Year 1 pupils. Boats class then told us all about Easter in other countries before we were treated to a wonderful rendition of ‘Hot Cross Buns’ accompanied by percussion and ukuleles. It was amazing to see how much progress the pupils in Class 3 have made learning the ukuleles in such a short time. To end the service Class 4 read out the very poignant prayers they had written. Interspersed with wonderful singing from the pupils, the choir and the congregation it was a fantastic celebration!

The children have come back refreshed after the Easter holidays and are all keen to embrace our new Learning Quest this term - ‘FFood and Farming’. To stimulate the children the whole school will be going on a trip to Washingpool Farm. As a school we are very grateful to the Friends of 8 the School, and everyone who supports their events, as they are contributing towards the cost of the trip.

I would like to extend my grateful thanks to everyone who turned up to support our Duck Race on Easter Monday. Despite the stormy weather we had a record number of people turn up to the event. A huge ‘thank you’ to the Friends for organising it and to everyone who helped out on the day. A special ‘thank you’ also to Rotary Club of Bridport for the loan of the ducks, CG Fry & Son for the loan of the fence panels, The Chocolatier Shop in Bridport for donating the first prize, Noreen Short for keeping us in constant supply of boiling water for the refreshments and to Iaan Reece (Parish Council), Lewis Dunn and Guuy Clatworthy (parents) for braving the river!

Winners on the day – Ducks: 1st - Dan Mayo, 2nd - Julian Piper, 3rd - Ian Staple, Booby prize – Debbbie Russell. Guess the Name of the Bunny – Ana and Eva Coughtrey. Guess the Eggs in the Jar – Jules Handyside. Obstacle race – Kaitlyn Wellman

It was lovely to see so many parents, villagers and holidaymakers having fun and, thanks to their generosity, we raised £1,1108 for the school.

Claire Staple Headteacher THORNER’S CE VA SCHOOL In the Autumn Term, one of our ex- parents, who is a stone carver, worked with all the children and staff to carve our school values in stone. Another ex-parent has done a wonderful job of putting them on the wall in the front of the school. Please do come and look – and admire!

The children sang and played confidently and with gusto at our Easter concert. Several instrumentalists played solo or in groups. Bredy did a fantastic dance, Eggardon their recital of ‘The Highwayman’ and Litton and Chesil a ‘chick’ song and dance. The 9

TSA helped the evening get off to a good start with their refreshments. Our collection for Wessex Heartbeat was £35.

Thank you to all who accompanied us to church for our Easter service and for our service at the start of the summer term. A big thank you to the TSA for providing hot cross buns and drinks to the children, staff, parents and friends.

Children from Year 2 upwards competed in a house spelling bee. The finalists were cheered on by their houses. It was a close finish and Edmund Hillary house won the Spelling Trophy. Super work, all, not least the parents for helping their children with the spellings.

Sport: We played the tag rugby county finals at and came 6th out of 28 competing teams. Our team lost only one match. What a fantastic squad! We played basketball against St Osmund’s Middle School, Dorchester, and won both Chesil and Litton have matches. Well done team! been making robots!

Bredy went to the Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre. They had an adventurous, if somewhat scary, time!

There was a hive of TSA activities in the last week of the Spring term. The Easter hat and cake competition were a great success; it was brilliant to see so many amazing entries and the children all enjoyed wearing their hats. The uniform and cake sale raised an amazing £104.50.

DON’T FORGET TO V0TE ON 5TH MAY 2016 The question to be asked in the Referendum is: HOW WOULD YOU LIKE DISTRICT COUNCIL TO BE RUN?

By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of other elected councillors. This is how the council is run now. or By one or more committees made up of elected councillors. This would be a change from how the council is run now

There is a link www.dorsetforyou.com/referendum-committees-west on the poll cards to a page setting out WDDC proposals for a new constitution, and also a link on that page to the current constitution.

The Public First Group is campaigning in favour of the second option, to adopt a ‘Committee System’, and their view can be found at www.publicfirstgroup.co.uk

ABBOTSBURY & PORTESHAM BRANCH THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND From 3 May until 1 June, national events will be held to mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, which was the largest naval battle, and the only full-scale clash of battleships of WW1. Involved in that conflict aboard HMS Collinwood was Prince Albert as a 20 year old midshipman who would later become King George V1. He survived unscathed. Also in the battle, but in this case on HMS Warspite, were brothers Alan Curtis Heard and Francis Guy Heard, each without knowing of the presence of the other – not so surprising, given the crew numbered 1220 men! Warspite was lucky to survive the action being hit 15 times with 14 men being killed in action. The Heard brothers were still on board the Warspite when the Grand Fleet accepted the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of the war. A/S Guy transferred in January 1917 to HMS Marlborough. We know much of this information due to research by our own (former WAAF member Betty Dominy (Branch Member) who is Alan’s daughter, born 31 May, 1924.

On 26 May we have a coach day trip to Wiltshire to the Army Air Corps Museum where the royal princes trained as helicopter pilots. Full details available – open to non-members providing advance notice and payment. Call 01305 267617 to book.

13 July is our Fish & Chip Supper evening at Portesham Village Hall: book ahead with Des Baker.

27 September to 4 October Des Baker’s tour of Amiens (France) and Mechelen (Belgium) gets under way; there are still vacancies

14 available. This event is in aid of the Poppy Appeal and Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance.

Would you be interested in a full-board 6-day cruise on the Severn River with a full complement of excursions, starting on 15 May 2017? Des would be interested to know if you have any interest such a holiday. Please call him soon so that he can assess its viability! This is an event designed to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. and is run over a challenging course which involves crawling through under and over various obstacles and to show cancer that hell has no fury like a team of women dressed as a herd of dirty cows.

The team of employees from Ford Farm, the Litton Cheney based, award winning Dorset cheesemaker will be dressed as cows throughout the entire challenge, comprises Team Leader, Sian Whitlock, Fiona Goldsmith, Amy Read, Claire Churchill, Nicola Phillips and Wendy Davies. ‘Getting in training for the event now is critical and the first step is to learn to embrace mud, mud glorious mud.’ said Sian Whitlock, speaking on behalf of the team.

From Friday 6th May you will find it in the LATCH car park from 8.30 a.m. until 11 a.m., moving from its previous location at The White Horse. Please give the mobile shop your avid support. It is a worthy project, sells excellent products and supports local farms and food producing businesses. Memo to Self: Every Friday morning – LATCH.

VILLAGE DEFIBRILLATOR The defibrillator has now been activated and is ready for use. Instructions on its use via a video link is available on www.littoncheney.org.uk but it will be the South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS) who on receiving a 999 call will decide if it should be used. If it is not the right circumstances then the machine is bright enough to make the decision itself, in addition to the advice given by SWAS. Let's hope it gets very little use for all the right reasons.

EASTERN DREAMS: BRITAIN'S FASCINATION WITH THE ORIENT This day lived up to its title being full of “Eastern Promise” ! Those who came, 40 in all, were treated to a fascinating exploration of art and design influences in PAUL ATTERBURY’S very stimulating talk. It is always a delight to listen to so knowledgeable an expert, full of enthusiasm about his subject as Paul certainly is.

The day consisted of 2 sessions; one in the morning and then after an excellent lunch from Fivepenny Catering, Paul commented on items such as souvenirs and heirlooms brought by the participants.

22

As a result we were pleased to be able to send the charity 'Horatio’s Garden' a cheque for £535. This includes the proceeds from the day, a generous donation and the monies from the raffle.

Thank you Sally Dyke and Alison Davidson

LITTON CHENEY SOCIAL COMMITTEE Weather forecasts were scrutinised for days before hand, plastic sheets , gazeboes etc all mentioned, the White Horse put up a marquee , which quickly came down, but on the day a window of opportunity was forecast from 11.30 to 12.10 so the plunge was taken, the ducks were prepared for release and once again the Duck Race was readied for the off.

Doors opened and the Pied Piper effect was seen yet again as smiling families hurried along main street in case all the ducks had been “sold”. The stream was running at its fastest for years as the ducks nervously huddled in the marshalling pond, the signal was given that the final duck had been backed and off they went. Many got caught in the rapids and in the dangerous whirlpool below the waterfall, but a garden hoe helped them on their way to the finish line, where they were sympathetically “saved” for another dash for the line at Burton Bradstock the following day. Many thanks to Bridport Rotary for the ducks.

The White Horse was packed and burgers eaten by many, with the children enjoying the Easter egg hunt. Thanks Jaemie and Pete. Also thanks to all who came along and those who helped, as it wouldn’t take place without you!

The AGM Fest is on Thursday 5th May 7.00pm at LATCH when you can find out what is happening in the village. Do come along and support those who contribute so much to the social life of the village. Following reports from LATCH Social Committee and the WEB Group, there will be a DVD showing of a Safari Trip in Botswana. Do not be afraid – this is not a holiday video as you know it! So if you have ever wondered what a long drop is, now is your chance to find out, and receive a glass of wine to thank you for your trouble.

The BRIDE VALLEY NAVIGATIONAL CHALLENGE is on Thursday May 19th from 6.30 p.m. at the White Horse. Tickets are only £5, which includes a light snack when we return around 9.00. Clive Edwards is the contact person and it is important to let Clive know you are coming plus the numbers in your car. Clive can be contacted on 01308 482605 or [email protected]. 23

Sunday 31st July is the date for the SUMMER BBQ which will start at 4.00pm. Tickets will be on sale from early June with a maximum number of 100, and it is best to buy your tickets early as last year we had to refuse some latecomers but, fortunately, returns became available so everyone was able to come. This year we will have a waiting list for those who cannot commit to buying a ticket when approached, but no guarantee can be given that places will be available. We are looking for volunteers to help, including joining the Master Barbecuers Team! Could that be you?

BOOK CLUB This month’s read was ‘LLand of Love and Drowning’ by Tiphanie Yanique. There was some divergence of opinion, and, as ever, plenty of discussion, about this book. The novel is an ambitious narrative which covers several generations of a family living in the American Virgin Islands during most of the twentieth century. The story develops to focus on two sisters of this family, drawing on traditional island myths as well as historical and political events to create quite a complexity seen through the eyes of the main characters; narrated in several voices and language styles.

Some in our group found the style didn't appeal and the novel lengthy, and some found the mythical element unconvincing. Others thought the book to be clever, informative and imaginative. Most found the historical information about the Islands and their politics interesting. If nothing else, the novel, being based in the Virgin Islands, was certainly topical! Jackie Hunt

PUNCKNOWLE DEFIBRILLATOR There was a dramatic incident in the Crown on Friday 25th March where barman Nick Collingwood collapsed suffering a cardiac arrest. Thanks to some quick thinking, volunteers performed CPR for about 20 minutes until the paramedics arrived and took him to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital where he was treated and is now recovering at home.

Landlady Blanche Alexander started a fundraising campaign for a defibrillator to be installed in the village, and within just 5 days the target £1K was reached. With matchfunding by Palmers Brewery an order for the defibrillator has been placed and it will be on the outer back wall of the pub.

A Defibrillator Demonstration Fun Day at the Crown has been provisionally set for Saturday 4th June starting at midday . South Western Ambulance Service will be on hand all day to demonstrate the machine and offer basic first aid advice and there will be live music, games and a BBQ to make it a fun day and celebrate community spirit! Keep an eye out for posters and the notices in the next BVN.

LITTLEBREDY VILLAGE CORRESPONDENT: email: pwbridehead@btinternet. com Tel: 482232 Welcome to India Gore, who has moved into Foxholes Farm Cottage over the Easter period. She joins us as a newcomer to the village, but her housemate’s move has been shorter, as Poppy Armstrong has moved from West Lodge to live there too. They are work colleagues in the expanding empire of The Stables chain of restaurants, and we wish all concerned well.

The “MMade in Dorset” event at Bridehead on the 19th March was designed to showcase local artwork and produce and included a stall of goods provided entirely by Littlebredy residents in aid of the Church (which also shared some of the profits from the whole event). Thanks to the hard work and salesmanship skills of many people, the Church benefited to the tune of over £900 from the event – well done to all.

The same applies to the splendid team which decorated the Church so beautifully for Easter. With primroses (and bluebells even more so) on the late side this year, some of the traditional texts in the windows had to be dispensed with, but overall it was the customary great display, much appreciated by visitors and those who attended the services. Thanks and congratulations to everyone for their skill and hard work. And thanks too to Ben and Charlie for laying on the Lent Frugal Lunch at The Old Parsonage just before Easter, which also contributed at their request to the Church’s coffers.

Advance notice that Her Majesty the Queen hopes that local communities will be contributing to the official celebrations of her 90th birthday by organising events of their own over the weekend of the 11th/12th June. No doubt the Social Club Committee will be putting their thinking caps on in the meanwhile so that there will be something in the village to publicise in these Notes next month. CALLING ALL LOCAL CREATIVE TALENT! We are always on the look out for photographs or other artwork to grace the cover of the BVN. Please forward electronic copies of images for submission, along with any queries about format resolution etc to the editor at [email protected]. A bounty of £10 will be paid for any cover image used

100 MILE WALK Over the weekends of May 1st - 2nd and May 29th - 30th, walkers who are participating in this event will be using the Village Hall for some rest and recuperation. Watch out for the torchlights of the night walkers. Not only is it excellent that the hall is being used by the group, but also that one of their members has donated a fridge for the hall kitchen. We are very grateful for this and hope that the walkers enjoy their visit to Long Bredy and the Bride Valley.

COFFEE MORNING AND BRING AND BUY Rosemarie and Albert Pitcher and family are having a bring and buy, cake sale, plants and raffle on Saturday 21st May from 10.00 till 12.00 in the Village Hall, to raise funds for their grandson, Charlie, who is taking part in Kingsbere Explorer Scout Kenya Expedition 2017, in association with ‘MMoving Mountains’, and needs funds towards the cost.

If anyone would like to donate, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact Long Bredy 482486

PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN The Parish Council would like to say a huge thank you to all those who took part in the Annual Spring Clean picking litter, driving the support vehicle, organising refreshments etc. We had a good turnout again this year and it was lovely to have so many children taking part. Once again we were surprised by the large amount of litter collected and the variety! Several people were unable to attend on the day but carried out their own clean up around the village so many thanks for that. The refreshments

were most welcome after the hard work and the donations collected amounted to £13.15. This will go towards the expenses of the morning.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETINGS The Annual Parish Meetings for Kingston Russell and Long Bredy will be held separately on Monday, 23rd May in the Village Hall, Long Bredy. The Kingston Russell Parish Meeting will be held at 6.30pm and this will be followed by the Long Bredy Parish Meeting at 7.00pm. One item under discussion will be village fund raising and the distribution of the proceeds. This is your opportunity to raise matters relating to the parishes of Long Bredy and Kingston Russell. If you have an issue you would like discussed please bring it to the meeting or let the Parish Clerk know beforehand so that it can be added to the agenda. Refreshments will be served. Parish Clerk: Gwen Kinghorn, 7 Bedford Terrace, Long Bredy Tel: 01308 482270 or email [email protected]

THE PLAYING FIELD, LONG BREDY Children of the village, visiting nieces, nephews, grandchildren and visitors, the Parish Council would like your views on the playing field! How would you improve it? Would you like more seating areas, different play equipment and if so what kind? New equipment needs money; would you and your family be happy to help raise it? It’s your area so have a think and let us know. You can speak to Gwen Kinghorn, the Parish Clerk, or drop a note into the Parish Clerk, 7 Bedford Terrace, Long Bredy, or speak to a Parish Councillor or send an email to [email protected] or come along to the Annual Parish Meeting (the refreshments are very good!) or send your parents along to speak for you.

FINGERPOSTS Of the 1285 fingerposts which Dorset had in the 1950’s, fewer than 717 survive today in their original form. With the curved end to the arms and the roundel giving the county name, place name and grid reference, Dorset’s are thought to be unique. (The grid reference on the roundel appeared at the request of the Ministry of Transport to have this included as an experiment on the posts in the West Riding of Yorkshire and Dorset.) Some counties’ posts are square-ended; others are pointed/triangular.

The County Council no longer has a remit to replace them and so those in Long Bredy have been refurbished using a substantial grant from Dorset County Councillor Ian Gardner’s Divisional Fund, a small grant from AONB, with residents and friends providing the rest of the money. In order to have the grant, strict criteria had to followed.

Facts and figures (and mental arithmetic if you wish!) about the re- furbishment:

David and Ruth Cullingford removed both the old arms of the 4 posts, which in some cases were just plywood, and tricky to remove as screws had rusted. All new arms had to be made from hardwood with a good tannin content. Russell Randell sourced the oak which was used. 274 letters were cast to the accepted standard by Stephen Coles of . Dick Elliot fettled and painted every letter. David Cullingford shaped the ends of the arms. David and Ruth Cullingford, with some help from David Cain, painted the 9 arms and most of the posts.

42

Painting the arms was another condition of the grant - 4 undercoats and at least 3 topcoats. Michael Felce painted the post of the church sign. David Cullingford and Dick Elliot assembled everything. All the letters had to be screwed on with an average of 3 screws for each letter, using countersunk screws. The bulk of the work was done by David and Dick using their excellent wood and metal work skills and the Parish Council particularly wishes to thank them.

Traditional road signage is becoming rarer; Long Bredy is very fortunate that people value it enough to help cover the cost of refurbishment and that it has some extremely dedicated residents who gave up MANY hours of their time over the last year to preserve some of Dorset’s unique heritage for the next generation or two. A labour ….. but not necessarily of love, by the end! Thank you to everyone who contributed, especially the parish councillor who initiated the project.
