Theoretical Implications of the Beachy Amish-Mennonites DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Cory Alexander Anderson Graduate Program in Rural Sociology The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Joseph Donnermeyer, Advisor Richard Moore Edward Crenshaw Copyrighted by Cory Alexander Anderson 2014 Abstract One of the hallmarks of social science is the interaction of theory and methods/data, the former guiding the latter and the latter refining the former, in a cyclical relationship. The goal of theory is to provide explanations for and even predict a range of human behaviors. One potential cause of theoretical stagnation is an over focus on a singular, usually easily accessible group. Given the persistence of plain Anabaptists like the Amish as a highly distinct subgroup in American society, their utility for refining sociological theories is persuasive, but has rarely been employed to this end because of their social inaccessibility, shyness towards social science research, and the popular interpretive frames placed on them that distract would-be investigators. Even with Amish-focused scholarship, the emphasis has been largely on describing the population or applying theory to understand the Amish case, but not returning findings back to theory in critique and revision. This dissertation introduces and contextualizes the plain Anabaptists, then describes the Beachy Amish-Mennonites, a group within the Amish religious tension, but dealing markedly with tensions between separatism and assimilation. Following this introduction are three independent studies that demonstrate the use of plain Anabaptists to refine theory. -

The Amish, one of the few surviving folk cultures in the United States, still sing the hymns in the original German. Their ancestors penned the words to these hymns nearly five hundred years ago on another continent. Ironically, the Amish arose in opposition to the Latin Christian Church (later known as the Roman Catholic Church), yet could be considered to be nearly their equal in their tradition. -

Mouw, then-President of Fuller Theological Seminary, wrote a foreword to a collection of essays by Mennonite theologian John Howard Yoder. He suggested that — thanks in good part to Yoder's work — adherents of the Reformed, Lutheran, or Roman Catholic traditions could no longer either ignore or politely condescend to the claims, arguments, and practices of the Anabaptist tradition. Professor Mouw's observation was a remarkable and generous nod to Yoder's theological project, and perhaps a confirmation of a growing assertion among Mennonite theologians and historians that Anabaptists do have "modern relevance." But the descendants of the early Anabaptists make up today, as they did five centuries ago, an exceedingly small portion of global Christianity: "Anabaptism forms but a rivulet in the stream of Christian tradition." Nevertheless, Mouw argued that Christians who are not of this tiny minority should pay attention to what it has to say. -

CHAPTER 1 Cathedrals, Churches, Caves Notes on Architecture, History, and Worship he layers of history, the ways the past persists, are easier to see Tin the Old World, where the irony of ancient towers juxtaposed against tattoo parlors and multinational fast-food outlets is inescapable. The smooth and rough children of western Europe at the millennium, in their black designer dresses or their spiked hair and pierced eyebrows, do not spend nights arguing infant baptism, the uses of the sword, or the perils and advantages of a state church, as my ancestors did during the Anabaptist Reformation of 1525. If today’s citizens were to meet to study the New Testament and reach conclusions about its meaning contrary to those of the state church, the worst they would suffer is ridicule. When my wife Marlyce and I crossed ancient European borders no one asked about our passports, let alone our religion; as long as our cash and credit cards held out, we were free as any bird. So we went our quiet way across Holland and France and Switzerland and Ger- many, sometimes simple travelers enjoying the food and the sights, sometimes pilgrims in pursuit of the strange, small traces of our past. We call ourselves Mennonites now, but our people have claimed and been given many names in the last five centuries, as they wandered over Europe and then to many parts of the world in search of places where they might work out their particular, pecu- liar version of the gospel. 5 6 Scattering Point We were in Europe for three weeks, hardly time to discover anything. -

IN THIS ISSUE In the world of academic scholarship, revision is the lifeblood of our work. New cultural and political realities continually prompt us to ask fresh questions; the discovery of additional sources forces scholars to revise assumptions that had once seemed clear; the evidence to which we appeal can always be interpreted in new contexts; and our methodological and disciplinary frameworks are always being challenged and refined. To the cynic, this constant process of revision can make scholarship seem like a hopelessly subjective enterprise—a gathering of endlessly shifting perspectives in which everything is merely an opinion and nothing is ever certain. But most of us recognize that our pursuit of Truth—be it in history, religion, philosophy, or any other discipline—is always, and necessarily, incomplete. The models we use to interpret the past frequently conceal as much as they reveal. Instead of making claims to describe the past “as it actually was,” in the words of the German historian Leopold von Ranke, it is more helpful for us to think of our work as a “continuing conversation” (or debate), as we seek to deepen our understanding of reality from new perspectives and amid changing circumstances. This issue of MQR offers readers a window into the revisionist nature of Anabaptist-Mennonite scholarship. The issue opens with my essay on the practice of church discipline among the Swiss Brethren that complicates conventional understandings of church-state relations in the seventeenth century. Traditionally, many historians of “confessional- ization” have argued that European states augmented their power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by co-opting the moral authority, religious discipline, and ecclesiastical structures of the territorial church. -

Although the Moravian Anabaptists never succeeded in creating common doctrines and practices, the Central and East European experience was not merely a marginal part of the great Anabaptist story. Out of these divergent tendencies grew a strong sect that survived exile through a radical social experiment. Hutterite colonies, settled in a hostile environment, fl ourished for a long period while other sects disappeared within a few years. The factors that determined the advance and survival of the Hutterites point beyond religious motives. This social experiment was dependent on the integrated social structure enabling them to cope with an aggressive environment without assimilating. Various epochs of the Hutterite history show that communal life was never a uniform and perfect experience, but variants of the structure persisted in the colonies as they evolved in their local circumstances. With this act a movement came into being that could not be stopped in spite of the imposition of the death penalty for those who accepted baptism as adults. Persecution quickly ensued, yet Anabaptism spread rap- idly across Europe. -

“State of the Church” Frequently Asked Questions From October 2020 to February 2021, the Annual Conference Moderator hosted the “Moderator’s District Q+A” sessions in partnership with the Annual Conference Moderator-Elect and Secretary; Twenty-four ZOOM sessions were held in 14 districts across the denomination. The focus of the sessions was the “state of the church.” The Q+As were open to all, both clergy and laity; districts were encouraged to publicize them widely. The questions that follow arose from those sessions; they are not exhaustive of every question on the hearts and minds of our constituency. Rather, they are representative of inquiries posed by both clergy and laity in a variety of districts. The Dawn of a New Age BACKGROUND During the next two centuries, the Holy Roman Empire slowly began to decline. Various states—such as England, Germany, and Bohemia—became angry when their tax dollars went toward building bridges in Rome. People from individual states began building loyalty toward those states instead of Rome. The Roman Empire, for all practical purposes, had become divided into smaller social states with their own unique ideals and customs. Other changes took place during the 1300s and 1400s as well. Across the empire, people became intrigued with ancient Greek and Roman philosophy and literature. This period of great awakening set the stage for new ways of thinking. By the early 1500s, corruption in the church had reached its peak. Many bishops, priests, abbots, monks, and popes were living in luxury and sin. The church had gained much wealth and power through the practice of selling indulgences. When a person sinned, he or she would confess the sin to the local priest. The priest would then ask that person to pay a specific fee, according to the seriousness of the sin. This fee was viewed as a guarantee that the sin would be forgiven. People also bought indulgences to release persons they knew from purgatory. Actually, the selling of indulgences was a profitable way to raise money for the government without assessing more taxes. People who were opposed to paying large sums of money in taxes often did not balk at paying small amounts (over time) for the purchase of indulgences. The church split these monies with the gov- ernment. -

On that day, as it has been well documented, a small group of young men gathered in the home of Felix Manz and, without ever knowing it, changed the course of Christianity, perhaps the course of all history.
