  • The Structure of Burkina Faso Kusaal
SIL Burkina Faso The Structure of Burkina Faso Kusaal Draft Edition Urs Niggli 2104 SIL, B.P. 1784, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso Preface The dialect of Kusaal which forms the basis of the present study is that spoken in and around Youga in the southeast of Burkina Faso, very close to the boarder to Ghana. Roughly the same language dialect is also spoken across the border in Ghana at the western side of the “Nakambe” river which separates Eastern from Western Kusaal. While there are various works on aspects of the Kusaal language, of which most have been written in Ghana, I felt the need for a sketch of the main aspects of the phonology, morphology, syntax and discourse of the Burkina Faso Kusaal in order to better understand the overall structure of Kusaal and provide a tool for those who want to further develop this beautiful language. Our insight was helpful for the development of an orthography guide and of the edition of the first Burkina Kusaal primer that is being used since 2012 in literacy. We did a sketch on the phonology (chapter 2) followed by an outline of the Nominal morphology (chapter 3) as well as the Verbal morphology (chapter 4). For the syntax analysis (chapter 5) we employed a structure - function approach. We tried to understand and describe the predictable grammatical patterns for Kusaal and the predictable ways in which the order of words in a sentence can (or cannot) be influenced by what goes on in the relationship between speakers and hearers, as well as the world around.

There is evidence that in the northwest of the modern state hunter-gatherers would have lived about 14,000 years ago. In the southwest the ruins of Loropeni were discovered, which became Burkina’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Already in the first millennium AD various ethnic groups including Gourounsi, Bobo and Senoufou lived in this area. From the beginning of the 12th century significant migration movements took place, which brought along important changes. As a result, the two Mossi kingdoms were founded at the end of the 15th century. These highly civilized states for a long time defended themselves successfully against the attacks of other intruders and Islamization. In the 18th and 19th centuries other groups migrated into what is now Burkina Faso, Lobi and Dagara came from Ghana and Ivory Coast, respectively, and settled down in the southwest of the country. In 1896, the French arrived and claimed the area. The Mossi kingdom of Ouagadougou was defeated and the country became a French protectorate and then, in 1904, part of French West Africa. During the French colonisation a number of uprisings took place. In 1915, a revolt initiated by the Bwa broke out. It was put down by the colonizers, after bloody battles, which saw hundreds of Bwa killed.

Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis Uppsala Studies in Cultural Anthropology 30 onds and Boundaries in orthern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso Edited by Sten Hagberg & Alexis B. Tengan UPPSALA 2000 ABSTRACT Hagberg, Sten; Tengan, Alexis B. (editors) Bonds and Boundaries in Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso. Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis, Uppsala Studies in Cultural Anthropology 30. 197 pp. Uppsala 2000. ISBN 91-554-4770-8. The volume contains ten essays that are concerned with the problem ofboundaries, and of the bonds that overcome them in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso. It explores cosmological notions of space, colonial and postcolonial representations and social practices. All the essays integrate, though in various ways, cosmological and geographical notions of space, although the topics vary from identity, religion and marriage to politics, history and farming in this frontier region. Most of the essays were initially written for an international seminar in Gaoua (Burkina Faso) in 1998, which aimed at crossing the boundaries, be they national, socio-cultural, linguistic, political or religious ones by bringing together some scholars of different cultural, postcolonial and academic environments. © Department of Cultural Anthropology & Ethnology and the authors 2000 ISSN 0348-5099 ISBN 91-554-4770-8 Typesetting: Mikael Brandstrom Printed in Sweden by Elanders Gotab, Stockholm 2000 Distributor: Uppsala University Library, Box 510, SE-751 20 Uppsala, Sweden Preface 7 Jan Ovesen Introduction: Coping with Cosmology and Geography

The dimensions and nature of a more extensive "Niger-Kordofanian" (or "new Niger-Congo") hypothesis are uncertain, and the additional sets involved have been classified within the 0=African geosector (see 00=Mandic and 06=Kordofanic). This phylosector is named Transafrican (rather than "Atlantic-Congo" or "old Niger-Congo less Mande") to maintain the broad geographic nomenclature of all ten sectors of the linguasphere, representing intercontinental or continental entities in each case. Zones 90= to 93= cover languages spoken by communities westwards from Senegal through the northern interior of West and Central Africa as far as northern Congo/Zaire and southern Sudan. 90=ATLANTIC (northern West Atlantic) 91=VOLTAIC (Gur) 92=ADAMAWIC 93=UBANGIC (Eastern) Zones 94= to 97= cover languages spoken by communities westwards from Guinea through the coastal regions of West Africa as far as the Niger Delta. 94=MELIC (southern West Atlantic) 95=KRUIC (Kru) 96=AFRAMIC (western Kwa) 97=DELTIC (Niger-Delta) Zones 98= and 99= cover languages spoken through Nigeria and across the whole continent as far as Tanzania and South Africa.

Appreciation is also extended to the skilled French and English translators, Jean-Marc Boffa, Sylvie Kauffmann, Jennifer Jakovljevic, and Christian Gautier for their contributions. Forward This is a technical report of research in progress at the Institut d'Etudes et de Recherches Agricoles (IN.E.R.A). Although the ARTS project has ended, agricultural research in Burkina Faso is just beginning. The work done during the ARTS project will be a starting point, not an end in itself. Results will be further tested and conclusions will continue to be refined. In this context, the usual summary of project results written by the campus staff and technical assistance team would be inappropriate. Instead this technical report is composed of "working papers" co-authored by the Burkinabe and American scientists. These are working papers in the sense that they are not final products, but rather documents written to help researchers organize their materials and communicate preliminary results to those colleagues whose comments ard criticism are essential elements in refining and polishing scientific communications.

Alain Joseph Sissao The integration of creative oral Alain Joseph Sissao is a research forms and techniques in fellow at the National Institute for Social Science/National Scientific and Fidèle Padwindbé Rouamba’s Technological Research Centre (INSS/ CNRST), Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Pouvoir de plume E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] The integration of creative oral forms and techniques in Pouvoir de plume (Fidèle Pad- windbé Rouamba) Fidèle Padwindé Rouamba’s novel, Pouvoir de plume (“Pen power”, 2003) summarises the life of a journalist, Goama Tansoba, alias Gilbert Torro. The principal narrator is Jean de Dieu, a friend of the journalist. The journalist recorded the narrative on five cassettes, which the heterodiegetic narrator has reconstituted to form a novel. The novel is also a pertinent analysis of the development problems of democracy in the country and in Africa in general. Particularly striking is the way the author exploits the oral tradition. Thus he makes an effort to use many proverbs drawn from the Moaaga oral tradition. A folktale “Le caïman et l’homme” (“The Caiman and the man”) is also included in the narrative. Moreover, in chapter nine, “Le Club” (“The Club”), the author introduces a story to illustrate the jesting alliance between the Bisa and Gourounsi. He therefore exploits, as did the Burkinabè novelists Patrick Ilboudo in Le procès du muet (“The trial of the deaf-mute”) and Noaga Kollin in Le retour au village (“Back to the village”), the virtues of this traditional practice, firmly established in the ethnic culture of Burkina Faso. I shall endeavour to reveal how the novelist Rouamba exploits the oral tradition in his work, in order to see how all the creative oral forms and techniques borrowed from the oral tradition act as catalysts in the production of a novel.

  • Tradition and Identity in Burkina Faso
Wesleyan University THE SAMBLA XYLOPHONE: TRADITION AND IDENTITY IN BURKINA FASO By Julie Lynn Strand Faculty Advisor: Eric Charry A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Middletown, Connecticut May 2009 ABSTRACT The Sambla are a small ethnic group nestled in a hilly region of western Burkina Faso, West Africa, who play a xylophone called the baan. Played by three musicians simultaneously on a single instrument, the baan accompanies all ritual, work, and recreational activities that require music in Sambla life, and it can be considered the principal Sambla musical instrument. They acquired the instrument from the Tusia, a neighboring ethnic group with whom they have long shared friendly relations as well as kinship and military alliances. In the late 19th century, two Tusia musicians migrated into Sambla country with their xylophone, after which the Sambla adapted the instrument and music to suit their needs and transformed it into a unique tradition. The Sambla’s acceptance and adaptation of the xylophone can be viewed as the latest step in the formation of their ethnic identity. The Sambla as an ethnic group were formed by a series of processes that began when they separated from another ethnic group, became geographically isolated, and began to absorb various foreign people, practices, and belief systems into their community, unifying themselves by their link to the land under a sacred earth chief. The creation of the baan tradition was another step in their process of identity creation, as it became an essential element to all ritual and social events and the center of Sambla musical life.
