Abstract Although it is commonly acknowledged that homophobia and racial marginalization influence queer African American male youth, there is very little research to back up this belief. Due to the paucity of information for clinicians, families, and communities on the relational dynamics of queer African American male youth and their parents, queer African American male youth were interviewed to explore the ways in which they understand their experience of the disclosure process, paying particular attention to the interface between race and sexual orientation and relational dynamics. This exploratory, qualitative study examined data gathered in interviews with individual male youth that identified themselves as African American and queer. Eleven participants were interviewed in semi-structured interviews for the purpose of exploring participant’s experience of the disclosure process with specific emphasis on their racial identity. Data analysis revealed essential structures which underlay the interpersonal and intrapersonal disclosure experience. In addition, a preliminary stage model, including pre-disclosure, disclosure and experience after disclosure was found. Implications for clinicians working with queer, African American male youth and their families are discussed as are suggestions for future research. Rothenberg (2001) suggested that heterosexism, racism, sexism, and class privilege are systems of advantage that provide those with the “right” sexual orientation, race, gender, and class with opportunities and rewards that are unavailable to other individuals and groups in society. Homophobia and heterosexism come in various forms from overt discrimination to more subtle forms, which include denial that they exist. Moreover, Font (1997) suggested that the effects of homophobia and heterosexism are more pronounced for marginalized communities. When that marginalization is based both on race and sexual orientation, the effects may be devastating. Akerlund & Cheung (2000) noted that queer people of color face unique and complex challenges --- integrating two marginalized identities in a society that does not fully accept either one. For example, in some African American communities, homophobia and heterosexism are taught openly from the pulpits of churches while parents reinforce those messages through their daily overt and covert interactions with their children. These messages shape and mold the views of both queer and non-queer youth planting seeds of internalized insecurities and self-hatred in all African American youth regardless of their sexual orientation (Lehoczky, 2005). Lehoczky (2005) further found that these messages directly increase the risk for African American queer youth for devastating problems such as drug usage, family alienation, homelessness, and suicide. Growing Up Gay in Black America 2 The effects of homophobia and heterosexism are not limited to youth themselves, but permeate familial relationships as well. In the African American community, where homophobia is so omnipresent, many youth may be less likely to come out to family members and friends, for fear of further alienation, leaving them isolated and distraught. D’Augelli, Grossman, & Starks (2005, p. 474) reported, “Adolescents whose families were unaware of their sexual orientation reported more fear of verbal and physical abuse from families than adolescents whose families knew.” The combination of homophobic beliefs along with issues of racial marginalization may be a deadly blend, and may perpetuate internalized self-hatred for queer, African Americans and a lack of support from those they love.     LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality.

Choi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Natalie Jolly, Ph.D. School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences The intent of this thesis is to explore existing gender norms in mixed martial arts cultures. Masculinity is particularly valorized in sport, creating tension for female athletes who are forced to balance masculine norms with feminine beauty ideals. While there is a robust literature on the intersections of mixed martial arts (MMA) and masculinity, female voices are rarely heard in that literature. My research goes beyond the work of others by incorporating female voices and perspectives. Grounded in gender constructionism, my thesis addresses how both male and female MMA fighters conceive of their and others’ participation in gendered terms, and how this informs their gender identities. My thesis further examines the intersections of masculinity and gender that are readily observable within MMA, and those that are less conspicuous or go largely unnoticed. Finally, my thesis explores how norms perpetuate gender stereotypes and highlight differences, as masculine norms persist in the fighting culture. The examination of gender norms in MMA contributes to a larger body of research concerning gender roles and norms in other social contexts.

Carrillo Sherick Hughes Luis Urrieta, Jr. © 2018 Esmeralda Rodríguez ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ESMERALDA RODRIGUEZ: Mujerista Youth Pedagogies: Race, Gender, and (Counter)Surveillance in the New Latinx South (Under the direction of Claudia Cervantes-Soon and George Noblit) Though there is a body of research that deconstructs essentialized perspectives on Latinx youth (Cervantes-Soon, 2012; 2017; Cammarota, 2008; 2011; Denner & Guzman, 2006; Garcia, 2012: Stanton-Salazar, 2001; Valdes, 2001; Valenzuela, 1999) a large body of research has failed to perceive Latina girls in nuanced ways. Additionally, mainstream research and broader discourses on Latina adolescents have been dominated by a hyper-focus on the “problem of [Latinx] adolescent behavior” (Akom, Cammarota, & Ginwright, 2008, p. 1). In the face of this, however, Chicana and Latina feminist writers use academic research and narrative writing to testify against deficit portrayals of Latinas. However, a review of these works has also spotlighted the reality that even this critical body of work has ignored the wisdoms and lived experiences of Latina youth. There has been much work that focuses on the perspectives of adult women who tend to look back to their youth in order to make sense of their adulthood. Conversely, this research age-gap has elucidated the importance of youth experiences and the need to for nuanced scholarship that centers their experiential knowledge.
