They provide an unparalleled opportunity for studying marine biogeography because they include the globally distributed families Tripterygiidae (triplefin blennies) and Blenniidae (combtooth blennies), the temperate Clinidae (kelp blennies), and three largely Neotropical families (Labrisomidae, Chaenopsidae, and Dactyloscopidae). However, interpretation of these distributional patterns has been hindered by largely unresolved inter-familial relationships and the lack of evidence of monophyly of the Labrisomidae. Results: We explored the phylogenetic relationships of the Blenniiformes based on one mitochondrial (COI) and four nuclear (TMO-4C4, RAG1, Rhodopsin, and Histone H3) loci for 150 blenniiform species, and representative outgroups (Gobiesocidae, Opistognathidae and Grammatidae). According to the consensus of Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood, and Maximum Parsimony analyses, the monophyly of the Blenniiformes and the Tripterygiidae, Blenniidae, Clinidae, and Dactyloscopidae is supported. -

Artisanal fisheries in the SE Brazilian coast: using fisher information towards local management A. Begossi Nepam Unicamp, CP 6166, Campinas, S.P. 13081-970, Brazil Abstract Coastal artisanal fisheries in SE Brazil are located close to huge urban centers, such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo cities. Many of these fisheries are also adjacent to Atlantic Forest remnants. The growth of tourism, and associated recreational fishing, along with pollution in the coastal waters, increased the chances of impact on species and on artisanal fishing. Some fish species are located close to shore, such as species of Serranidae (groupers, such as Epinephelus and Mycteroperca) and seem vulnerable to the impact from fishing and from pollution. Other species, such as from the family Centropomidae (snooks, Centropomus spp.) are found in estuarine environments, and are also a target of recreational fishers, being subject to pollution coming from coastal rivers. In order to have more information on fishing for species of Serranidae and Centropomidae, I marked the fishing spots used by artisanal fisheries in different communities found in the SE Brazilian coast. The spots were marked using GPS Garmin III and V and Magellan. Maps of the fishing spots used to catch Serranidae and Centropomidae were drawn (103 fishing spots for groupers and 36 for snooks). Such maps are based on local fisher information, and they show the area used to fish the Serranidae and Centropomidae. Such data are important to designate areas for artisanal fisheries, and to evaluate the pressure on species of Serranidae and Centropomidae. CALIFORNIA MARINE FISH LANDINGS FOR 1972 LEO PINKAS Marine Resources Region 1.1. INTRODUCTION The protection, propagation, and wise utilization of California's living marine resources (established as common property by statute, Section 1600, Fish and Game Code) is dependent upon the welding of biological, environment- al, economic, and sociological factors. Fundamental to each of these factors, as well as the entire management pro- cess, are harvest records. The California Department of Fish and Game began gathering commercial fisheries land- ing data in 1916. Commercial fish catches were first published in 1929 for the years 1926 and 1927. This report, the 32nd in the landing series, is for the calendar year 1972. It summarizes commercial fishing activities in marine as well as fresh waters and includes the catches of the sportfishing partyboat fleet. Preliminary landing data are published annually in the circular series which also enumerates certain fishery products produced from the catch. -

Jacobs Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Los Angeles, CA, United States of America ABSTRACT We investigate hybridization and introgression between ecologically distinct sister species of silverside fish in the Gulf of California through combined analysis of morphological, sequence, and genotypic data. Water diversions in the past century turned the Colorado River Delta from a normal estuary to a hypersaline inverse estuary, raising concerns for the local fauna, much of which is endangered. Salinity differences are known to generate ecological species pairs and we anticipated that loss of the fresher-water historic salinity regime could alter the adaptive factors maintaining distinction between the broadly distributed Gulf-endemic Colpichthys regis and the narrowly restricted Delta-endemic Colpichthys hubbsi, the species that experienced dramatic environmental change. In this altered environmental context, these long- isolated species (as revealed by Cytochrome b sequences) show genotypic (RAG1, microsatellites) evidence of active hybridization where the species ranges abut, as well as directional introgression from C. regis into the range center of C. hubbsi. Bayesian group assignment (STRUCTURE) on six microsatellite loci and multivariate analyses (DAPC) on both microsatellites and phenotypic data further support substantial recent admixture between the sister species. -

Among these specimens, we found 1 undescribed species of the genus Pseudopecoelus von Wicklen, 1946 (Pseudopecoelus ibunami n. sp.) of the intestine of the spotted grouper Epinephelus analogus Gill, 1863 (Actinopterygii: Serranidae) from Bahía de La Paz, Baja California Sur. This species is the number 40 known for this genus worldwide and the fifth registered parasitizing fishes from Mexico. The new species differs from the 17 species of Pseudopecoelus with vitelline follicles distributed anteriorly to ventral sucker by having a combination of the following traits: 1) body elongate, narrow, with irregular posterior end, 2) testes and ovary deeply-lobed, and 3) external seminal vesicle reaching only the anterior margin of ventral sucker. In addition, in this study we present new host and geographical records for 6 species of trematodes in marine fishes from Mexico and Pachycreadium gastrocotylum (Manter, 1940) Manter, 1954 is recorded for the first time in this country. -
