Local Expellee Monuments and the Contestation of German Postwar Memory
To Our Dead: Local Expellee Monuments and the Contestation of German Postwar Memory by Jeffrey P. Luppes A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Germanic Languages and Literatures) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Andrei S. Markovits, Chair Professor Geoff Eley Associate Professor Julia C. Hell Associate Professor Johannes von Moltke © Jeffrey P. Luppes 2010 To My Parents ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing a dissertation is a long, arduous, and often lonely exercise. Fortunately, I have had unbelievable support from many people. First and foremost, I would like to thank my advisor and dissertation committee chair, Andrei S. Markovits. Andy has played the largest role in my development as a scholar. In fact, his seminal works on German politics, German history, collective memory, anti-Americanism, and sports influenced me intellectually even before I arrived in Ann Arbor. The opportunity to learn from and work with him was the main reason I wanted to attend the University of Michigan. The decision to come here has paid off immeasurably. Andy has always pushed me to do my best and has been a huge inspiration—both professionally and personally—from the start. His motivational skills and dedication to his students are unmatched. Twice, he gave me the opportunity to assist in the teaching of his very popular undergraduate course on sports and society. He was also always quick to provide recommendation letters and signatures for my many fellowship applications. Most importantly, Andy helped me rethink, re-work, and revise this dissertation at a crucial point. -

When Sports Conquered the Republic: A Forgotten Chapter From the «Roaring Twenties.» Abstract After the First World War, sport experienced an astonishing growth in the successor states to the two empires of central Europe, a growth which can only be explained sociologically in terms of the general character of the twentieth century as a «physical century.» Furthermore, the intellectual climate of the times as well as the psychic state of the freshly-hatched Republicans plays a special role. That is, the enormous fascination with the «Moloch of sport» can be explained on the one hand by a non-intellectual worshipping of purely physical, measurable maximum achievements (record-mania), on the other by the America-cult that arose during this period (identical with the positive myth of technology, the cult of machines that replaced the pre-war view). -

A Critical Comment on Richard Steigmann-Gall's the Holy Reich

DOI: 10.1177/0022009407071630 Manfred Gailus A Strange Obsession with Nazi Christianity: A Critical Comment on Richard Steigmann-Gall’s The Holy Reich Richard Steigmann-Gall’s study of ‘Nazi conceptions of Christianity’ is, with- out question, both an interesting and provocative contribution to recent debates on religious conditions and nazi ideology in the Third Reich and, by extension, to the current controversies concerning secularization processes and the history of twentieth-century religion in general.1 These debates have been ongoing for the last 15 years, usually under the rubric ‘political religion’ and in the context of more recent attempts at revising the older sociological secular- ization paradigms. Regrettably, however, Steigmann-Gall makes far too little reference in his revised dissertation, published in 1999, to this broad and sometimes international debate. In this respect, let it be said at the outset, his contribution is not as novel, original or revolutionary as he, and some of his book-jacket reviewers — not least the three prime eulogists Richard Evans, Michael Burleigh and Helmut Walser Smith — would have us believe.2 1 Richard Steigmann-Gall, The Holy Reich. Nazi Conceptions of Christianity, 1919–1945 (Cambridge 2003). The book is based on the author’s revised dissertation, ‘“The Holy Reich”. To a Millennial Kingdom: the Nazi Aryanization of Christianity
TO A MILLENIAL KINGDOM: THE NAZI ARYANIZATION OF CHRISTIANITY Daniel Lucca Honors Thesis: Department of History University of Colorado Boulder Defense Date: April 5th, 2018 Defense Committee: Primary Advisor: Dr. David Shneer, Department of History Outside Advisor: Dr. Saskia Hintz, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Honors Council Representative: Dr. Matthew Gerber, Department of History Dan Lucca To a Millennial Kingdom: The Nazi Aryanization of Christianity One of the most defining characteristics of the Nazi regime was a virulent antisemitism, which manifested itself in the ideology and actions of the Nazi leaders and party. For instance, in his work Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler demonstrated virulent antisemitism by portraying the Jew as a parasitic being that corrupts others. As parasites, Hitler believed that Jews are “people without any true culture, especially their own.”1 This disdain for the Jews manifested itself in many hateful laws and acts. one of the most important being the strategy of Arisierung (Aryanization), which began in 1933. The process of Aryanization, according to Roderick Stackelberg and Sally A. Winkle, largely refers to the process of confiscating and selling off of Jewish property.2 However, Aryanization also encompassed the process of the removal everything that was Jewish or perceived to have Jewish influence from Germany. Besides the confiscation of Jewish property, the process of Aryanization included, but was not limited to: the destruction of Jewish books in book burnings, the exclusion of Jews from participating in national sports teams, and the the removal from Jews from the civil service and professions, the ban on Jews performing German music, and many other laws that seeped into every aspect of German society and culture during the Third Reich.
