Authority, Fear, and Tolerance in Spanish Religious Dialogues AUTHORITY, FEAR, AND TOLERANCE IN SPANISH RELIGIOUS DIALOGUES by MITCHELL ALLEN MCCOY (Under the Direction of Dana Bultman) ABSTRACT Sixteenth-century Spanish scholars engaged in the philological study of classical and biblical literature were inspired by both the content and structure of their readings. The patronage of scholars by the church, university, and aristocracy combined with the late fifteenth-century advent of the printing press to enable these scholars to respond by publishing their own literary expressions. The present study analyzes three distinct religious dialogues by Juan de Valdés, Miguel Servet, and Fray Luis de León that reflect their respective understandings of Christian doctrine and faith with a focus upon how the dialogues express the concepts of authority, fear, and tolerance. While the dialogical form of these intellectuals’ literary production mimicked the classical literary dialogues they were studying, the Christian doctrinal content reflected their personal values and pursuits as well as those of the society. Previous scholars of Juan de Valdés’s Diálogo de doctrina cristiana have intensely focused on Erasmus of Rotterdam’s influence upon early sixteenth-century Spanish spirituality to the neglect of other autochthonous spiritual influences, namely Fray Hernando de Talavera. Establishing Talavera as an inspirational influence upon Valdés recontextualizes the historical milieu and highlights how Valdés’s vernacular Christian dialogue carries on the pedagogical and church reform efforts initiated by Talavera. With the refined historical context in mind, this study is augmented by Paul Ricoeur’s salient characterization of the concept of authority that is then employed to closely read Valdés’s Diálogo de doctrina cristiana, Servet’s Dos diálogos de la Trinidad divina, and Fray Luis de León’s De los nombres de Cristo. The readings of each dialogue demonstrate how these authors used the dialogue form, language, and characters to establish themselves as authorities of Christian doctrine by sanctioning the credibility of scripture, reaffirming their understanding of the doctrinal centrality of Christ, and showing how fear and tolerance play integral roles in the concept of authority. There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors.

Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs (1485-1492) Nancy CALDWELL HEC Paris While historians disagree about details concerning the negotiations between Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, there is a consensus as to the protracted and complex nature of the process, and to a series of events, which form the founda- tion of this analysis. Rebounding from a failed negotiation In 1485, when King João II of Portugal rejected Columbus’s proposed expedition to sail “West in order to reach the East and make discoveries along the way”, the explorer left Lisbon to begin a new set of negotia- tions with Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. It is interesting to speculate why King João dismissed Columbus’s “entre- presa”. One probable explanation for King João’s refusal was that the king had already invested in an expedition to find a route around Africa to Asia. Although the results of that expedition were still unknown, if it proved suc- cessful, there wouldn’t be any perceived need to invest in a redundant explo- ration, which carried a great deal of risk, and no foreseeable advantages. But another strong possibility is that Columbus poorly managed a classic dilemma in negotiation. En estos últimos años, no han faltados estudios que han conseguido disipar la “discreta penumbra historiográfica” (Aldea Vaquero 1999,73) que ha envuelto a este fascinante personaje: Iannuzzi (2007 1-35, 2009) ha enfocado la función mediática de su mensaje; Pastore ha reconstruido el contexto de su proceso inquisitorial (2003, 113-117); Suberbiola Martínez (1985), ha seguido las actuaciones del primer arzobispo de esa ciudad en el enrevesado marco del Real Patronato de Granada; la musicóloga María Julieta Vega García Ferrer ha explorado la faceta de Talavera como compositor litúrgico (2007, 93-128). Porque el traje y el silencio nos hace pensar que es lo que no querríamos que fuese.”1 Israel Burshatin noted that Dorotea’s curiosity seeks not to confirm the idealized peculiarities of Moorish dress, but is a part of a larger interpretive process. This is the initial step in what Burshatin has described as a sixteenth-century practice of disposing the Moriscos- newly converted Muslims– on condition of their spirituality, and thereby reducing the identity of Spanish Muslims entirely to biblical exegesis (115). Additionally, Dorotea’s inquisitiveness suggests her role as a collective mouthpiece, which in order to quell her anxiety toward Muslim otherness probed the status of the mora’s conversion. Indeed, the ubiquitous nature of unrest felt toward the “Morisco problem” span over a hundred years leading up to their expulsion and is vastly complex. Nonetheless, the question of religiosity remains fundamental to an understanding of the relationship between the Christian and Muslim people of Spain, both then and now. Correspondingly, Dorotea’s relief at hearing the mora’s willful consent to Christian baptism irrespective of her attire and obvious dialectal shortcomings suggests a psychological urgency as to the Moriscos’ spiritual standing, particularly as it pertains to conversion. One has only to remember the roles of Male Bouche [Evil Tongue] and Faux-Semblant [False Seeming] in the Roman de la Rose to see that seduction typically attracted bad company.1 Seduction was, simply, an exercise of what medieval moral theologians typi- cally counted among the vitia linguae [sins of the tongue]: cursing, gossip, mockery, obscenity, loquacity, fatuity, fraud, flattery, dissimulation, hypocrisy, slander, and so forth.2 For many authorities on moral theology in the thirteenth century, these verbal offenses were grave enough to merit classification as an eighth cardinal sin, most famously in Guillaume Perault’s widely circulated Summa de virtutibus et vitiis.3 The subtypes of the vitia linguae cataloged by Perault and his contemporaries rationalize and organize the many abuses of language commonly treated in the vast corpus of medieval conduct literature, in both Latin and the vernaculars.4 Scarcely any mirror for princes, compilation of gnomic wisdom, treatise on moral theology, manual of chivalry, courtesy book, or guide to estate management (to name only a few genres that provided advice on conduct) failed to warn against the misuse of language.     Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus[a] (/kəˈlʌmbəs/;[3] between 25 August and 31 October 1451 – 20 May 1506) was an Italian explorer and Christopher Columbus navigator who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, opening the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
